"Understanding Amity"

""I'm Fine" Memories" is the twenty-ninth chapter of Luz Clawthorne: Hexside's Number One Delinquent Witch, as well as the twenty-ninth chapter of Luz Clawthorne overall.

Synopsis[]

Two sets of friends and family have some much needed talks with each other; everyone wonders why Amity is suddenly acting aloof again.

Plot[]

"Where could Amity be?" Luz asked as she and Gus looked around the carnival for Amity after she ran off. "Maybe she went to the restroom?" Gus suggested. "She did look sick before she ran off, maybe she got the stomach flu from the cotton-eye candy," Luz considered. "Missing someone?" asked a voice. Luz turned around and saw that it was Willow who had spoken while she consoled a tear-ridden King as Skara let him have a cheese dog. "King?" Luz went up to inspect him. "Why does he look upset? Is he alright?" "He had a breakdown," Willow told her. "I think you should talk to him." "Oh, King," Luz said, hugging King as Willow handed him to her. "Are you okay? Do you want to go home?" King sniffed. "I… I'll be okay." "You don't sound like you're going to be okay, buddy," Luz told him. "If this is about not paying much attention to you, I'm sorry." "No it's… it's not your fault," King replied, his voice sore. "I, uh, just need some rest." "Once I find Amity, I'll let her know that I'm gonna take you home," Luz said before turning to Willow. "Thanks for finding him." "Hey, no problem," Willow told her. "You better get him home. And if you need me for anything, I'm just a call away." "Yeah, I'll keep that in mind," Luz replied, looking at King and then at Willow. Four years ago… A ten-year-old Luz was hanging out with Willow in Bonesborough, showing her what she brought back from the human world. "Check these out, Willow-Wisp!" Luz said as she held up some poppers. "Mom and I got these when we were on a human treasure run, you throw them down and they pop!" "Wow, that's cool!" Willow said in awe. "So what do you plan to do with them?" "Oh I can think of something," Luz replied with a smirk as she looked around. "Like finding the perfect jerk to prank with these. Any jerks that you want payback on?" "Um, not that I know of," Willow answered awkwardly. "Hey, isn't that Half-a-Witch Willow?" a voice asked. Both girls noticed a nearby group of Hexside students. One girl with red hair and one eye was from the Oracle Track, a blonde mule demon girl was from the Beast Keeping Track, and a blue haired ferret girl was from the Bard Track. "Oh yeah, there she is hanging out with another loser, hehe," the ferret girl mocked. "Hey Half-a-Witch! Try to catch this!" the blonde mule demon jeered as she threw a sandwich at Willow, but Luz jumped in the way and caught it with her mouth. "Huh?" Luz spat is out. "Why don't you pathetic jerks leave Willow alone?" The redheaded cyclops witch glared at the human. "Who do you think you are?" "Luz Clawthorne, aka your worst nightmare!" Luz said as she threw the poppers at their feet, creating loud crack noises that made the students jump and fall. "Oh you're gonna pay for that!" the redhead shouted. "Welp," Hunter said as he stretched. "I think I'll be going. My uncle's probably starting to worry about me being out for so long. Nice seeing you again, Gossamer." "You too, Hunter," Gus responded. Hunter glanced at Willow. "Hey, Flower Girl, haven't seen you in a long while." "Yep, I am glad to see that you are doing well," Willow said and the two slapped their hands together. "This is Skara, a newer friend of mine." "Hey, you're the trash man from the party!" Skara pointed out, making Hunter chuckle. "I'll see you all around," Hunter said as he got on his skateboard. "Good luck with your minty girlfriend, Luz." Luz's eyes widened. "I didn't tell you she was my girlfriend!" "You didn't need to. It was obvious," Hunter told her as he skateboarded away. "Where is Amity? Wasn't she with you guys?" Willow asked. "She ran off, looking sick," Luz mentioned. "I don't know if it was something she ate but… I'm worried about her." Eventually they spotted Amity standing near the Hall of Mirrors, looking much more composed than when Luz had seen her last. Luz waved at her and called out. "Amity! Are you okay?" "Yes, I'm… fine," Amity answered in a monotone voice as Luz came up to her. "Hey, um, King got upset so I'm just gonna-" Luz stopped when Amity just walked past her, much to her confusion. "Amity?" "You should take him home." Amity told her. "I'm not feeling well, so I called Edric and Emira to come and pick me up." "Well, maybe you'd like someone to walk with you to the exit-" "I'm good," Amity said as she continued to walk away from the group. "That was… weird." Gus commented. "Yeah, I hope she's doing okay," Skara said, concerned. "Hey, finally found you guys," said Amelia, who walked up to them while holding her stomach. "You guys think we should go home? I still have an upset stomach from that ride earlier." "It is almost curfew," Willow pointed out. "I'll have my mom pick us up and drive us," Skara suggested as she brought out her crow to call her mom. "I can just walk home with King, I know the way from here," Luz said. "Are you sure, Luz?" Gus asked. "We're probably getting a free ride in a silver carriage!" "Nah, you guys go ahead and I'll see you at school tomorrow," Luz said, waving at them before leaving with King in her arms. Ed and Em were waiting outside the carnival as Amity came towards them. "Hey Mittens, how's the carnival?" Emira asked her, but Amity just walked past her. "It's fine, not feeling well," Amity explained, brushing them off. The twins looked confused and concerned as they followed her. "Are you sure everything is fine?" Edric asked, but Amity didn't respond. He glanced worriedly at his twin sister. "Did something happen at the carnival?" Emira asked. "Nothing to worry about," Amity assured. "I just have a headache..." "ED! EM! That's not me!" Amity cried out from inside her own mindscape, helpless to do anything but watch as she was held prisoner in her own head. "HELP! That's not me!" "How are you feeling, King?" Luz asked as she walked King home. "Better now," King replied, though there was something on his mind. "Hey, Luz." "Yeah?" "Do you think I'm a bother to you and Eda?" he asked. "What?" Luz asked, shocked. "You're my brother, of course you're not a burden to us." "What about that time I almost got you killed with the elixir?" he asked and Luz's eyes widened. "King, have you been thinking about that again?" she asked him. "It was just an accident, you can't let it get to you." "I know, but… you have friends and a girlfriend now and it made me feel left out," King said sadly. "We used to do a lot of things together and I was the one making sure you're safe from anymore slaygrounds and nonprescription elixirs. But now you have so much going on and I don't know if I fit in your life anymore. You're tough and you don't need me, so I feel like I'll just get in your way." "King… you're an idiot," Luz told him. "Don't you dare say you're just in the way, cause you're not. No matter what, you'll always be one of my best friends and my brother. You can't let the past mess with you either, all we can do is keep going forward." "Really?" he asked. "Take it from me, I've done a lot of dumb shit in my life and thinking about those made me realize just what kind of person I want to be. I know we don't do crimes anymore, but it doesn't mean we can't be close. The King of Demons still needs his most loyal right-hand of mayhem." King gave a small laugh. "True." When they made it to the Owl House and walked through the front door, they were welcomed by the sound of laughter. "And you know that time Nicole wet herself in class?" Eda asked. "That was actually me who set it up." Raine snorted. "Oh man, it really was you but I really shouldn't be surprised. At least it wasn't as bad as the time you let the school mascot loose." "And don't forget the Abomination uprising," Eda said before noticing her daughter. "Luz! King! You're back! How was the carnival?" "We had a good time, but King got a little upset so I decided to bring him back," Luz said, looking at Raine. "Uh, hi there." "Um, salutations, you must be Eda's daughter," Raine said awkwardly. "I'm Rainestorm - I mean, Raine Whispers, my pronouns are they/them, and I am an old friend of Eda's. It's nice to meet you, Luz, and King." They slapped themselves on the forehead. "Why did I say salutations?" "Oh, it's nice to meet you, Raine," Luz replied, shaking their hand. "Eda has told me about you before and how you were in the Bard Track." "Eda told me that you're in the Bard Track as well," Raine mentioned. "And here is a tip from a member of the Bard Coven: poetry and music go well with romance. Combining the three is an easy way into your girlfriend's heart. Trust me, I know from experience." They smiled at Eda, who smiled back. "Uh, thanks for the advice," Luz said before realizing something. "Wait, how did you know I have a girlfriend… Mom!" She looked at Eda, blushing in embarrassment. "I didn't mention a name, only that you had a girlfriend," Eda said while drinking the rest of her apple blood. "But Rainestorm does know what they're talking about." "Well, I must be off," Raine said while putting their hood over their head. "If I stay any longer, I will be missed. It was nice meeting you again, Eda, and you too, Luz and the King of Demons that I've heard so much about as well." "I would give you my card but I don't know where I could print one," King said. "I will keep in touch, Eda," Raine promised as they headed for the door. "Whisper you later." "Is that a thing you say?" Luz asked, only for Raine to look down in embarrassment. "No… it sounded cooler in my head…" Raine admitted and Eda came to pat them on the back. "Hey Rainestorm, don't be a stranger. You are always welcome here," Eda told them with a smile and Raine smiled back. "Thank you, Eda," Raine told her before leaving the Owl House. "They seem pretty nice," Luz commented. "Yeah, they are," Eda confirmed, before looking at King. "You alright, King?" "Yeah just… you don't mind if we talk about something?" King asked and Eda patted his head. "You can talk to me about anything, King," Eda told him with an assuring look. "I'm just going to leave you two alone," Luz said as she put King down. "Good night, Mom. Good night, King." She left so that Eda and King could be free to talk. After Amelia had been dropped off at her house, it was just Skara and her mother in the spider-drawn carriage. "So you had fun at the carnival, Skara?" Calypso asked her daughter as she took a sip from the flask that she carried. "Yeah, we did," Skara replied, though she was still concerned about Amity and how she had acted when she left. "Hey, mom. Can I… talk to you about something?" "What's wrong, dear?" Calypso asked. "Well… there's this… friend and last semester I learned that they had a knife in their binder," Skara explained, not saying Amity's name. "They told me not to tell anyone, but I still can't help but think about that knife and wonder if I should tell more people about what I know." "Skara, it's a good thing you're telling me this," Calypso told her. "Do you know what your friend is doing with a knife, are they harming others with it?" "N-No, they'd never do that," Skara answered. "Well, if I were to take a guess, it sounds like your friend might be a danger to themselves then," Calypso suggested. "To themselves? What do you mean?" Skara asked, confused. "I mean that they might be thinking of using the knife for self-harm," Calypso explained. Skara gasped in horror. "You… you think she could?" "Perhaps your friend needs help," Calypso told her daughter. "It can be hard to read the signs sometimes, but has she acted uncharacteristically recently?" Skara thought about how Amity had canceled the annual conjuring sleepover and been keeping certain things to herself. But even though she hasn't been hanging out with Amity as often, she looked fine for the most part. "I'm not sure." Calypso nodded. "We can discuss this more with Principal Bump tomorrow when the school is reopened." She then took another sip from your flask while Skara thought to herself about how she was going to approach Amity about this. At Blight Manor, Lilith is in the hallways when she spotted Amity, who had just gotten back from the carnival. "Amity, so you have fun at the-" Lilith was brushed off when Amity walked past her, confusing the woman. "Amity?" "I'm fine," Amity said before going into her room. Lilith looked at Edric and Emira. "Did something happen?" "I don't think so," Emira answered. "But maybe right now she just needs her space." In her room, Amity was brushing her hair and checking her scroll for notifications. She noticed that Luz had messaged her and Amity sighed, deciding to ignore the messages. "No need for distractions." Back at the Owl House, King had finished explaining what was bothering him to Eda. "So you think I still blame you for endangering Luz with the elixir?" Eda asked, sounding concerned while King looked down. "King, I am just as much to blame for the incident. I should've explained to you two about the curse sooner…" "Your daughter's resting now, Edalyn," Dr. Bride told Eda, who sighed in relief. "If you want, I could give her body a few… modifications that would make her immune to all poisons." "Uh thanks, Lizzy, but I think I'll pass for now," Eda said before turning to King. "Come on King, let's go see Luz." The little demon kept his head down as he walked with Eda. They found Luz laying on a bed and recovering from getting her stomach pumped. She groaned as she woke up. "Mom… King…?" Luz asked. "Oooh, why does my stomach hurt?" "Luz! You're alright!" King hugged her, tears leaking from his eyes. "I'm… I'm so sorry…" He sniffed. "I shouldn't have given you that elixir or the idea to drink it!" "So… does that mean I can't do magic?" Luz asked as Eda sat down beside her, patting her head. "What matters is that you're alive," Eda told her with a sigh. "You two deserve to know the truth about me and why I take those elixirs. I am… cursed. I don't know who cursed me, but I have to drink one of these elixirs everyday to keep my curse at bay. If I don't, I end up transforming an Owl Beast form that I can't control. This is why I am known as the Owl Lady. My elixirs are not a magic juice that gives magic, there's no such thing. I'm telling you two this now because I need you two to understand why you shouldn't be taking my elixirs, even if I was afraid of telling you." "Why were you afraid of telling us, mommy?" Luz asked. "Nobody likes hanging out with a cursed witch," Eda explained. "The curse has already driven so many people that I care about away, so I was worried that it would drive you away as well." She suddenly felt Luz and King hug her, which surprised her. "I'm sorry that I drank your medicine," Luz apologized. "And I'm sorry for giving it to her," King apologized as well. "Nah, I'm sorry for not explaining it to you sooner," Eda replied, patting them both on the back. "I think that day brought us a lot closer," Eda explained to King. "Admittedly, I was mad at you for what you did, but I was even more mad at myself for not telling you two about my curse earlier because my own fears ended up endangering Luz. That moment was a wake up call that if I was going to keep watching over you two, I should tell you about my condition." "I was honestly surprised that you didn't hate me for what I did," King admitted. "I would never hate one of my own kids," Eda told him. "No matter how much you mess up. I just love you and Luz too much." "I'm not a kid, Eda," King said. "But… I like that I'm considered your kid. After all the time that we spent together, you are honestly the closest thing that I have to a mother." This surprised Eda and she remembered something, something that she hadn't told King. But she had promised herself that she would tell him someday. Just not right now. She smiled, putting her arm around him and pulling him close. "Thanks, and you're pretty much the son I never had. I know that you think that you've screwed up in the past, but so have I. We just gotta accept our mistakes, learn from them, and move on. You understand?" King nodded. "Yeah, I do." After taking a shower and putting on her sleepwear, Luz laid on her bed and checked her scroll to see if Amity had texted her back yet. No response. "Why isn't she messaging me?" Luz wondered. "Did I do something wrong at the carnival?" She suddenly heard her human cell phone ring and she answered it. "Hey Dips, what's up?" "Oh, this isn't Dipper," said a female voice on the other end. "He is just letting me borrow his phone so that I could talk to you, since it has been a while and I thought that you might want to hear from me." "Oh, hey Vee," Luz replied, recognizing the voice. "How has everything been going for you in the human world?" At the Emperor's Castle, Hunter had made it back and was in his Golden Guard uniform as he made his report to Belos and Kikimora in the throne room. "I can confirm the reports and sightings that we have been hearing of," Hunter said as he bowed. "There is indeed a Fae in the Boiling Isles." "Are you sure, Hunter?" Belos asked. "I saw it talking to Luz Clawthorne and Amity Blight," Hunter responded. "It matched the description given by the demon hunters and its shadow moved like it had a mind of its own. I am confident that it was a Fae." Belos nodded. "And the Fae knows the Clawthorne girl… interesting." "Should we bring in Lilith's apprentice for questioning?" Kikimora asked. "Lilith might need to be questioned as well if her protegee is in contact with a dangerous Fae." "That will not be necessary, since I doubt that Lilith knows her student is associated with an embodiment of chaotic wild magic," Belos told Kikimora. "And for now we will leave the Blight girl be. I had a conversation with her recently and I actually quite like her." He turned to Hunter. "Any updates on the condition of the Clawthrone girl?" "The only new development is a bracelet on Luz's wrist. Drawing attention to it made her defensive, so I suspect that it could be connected to her condition. Maybe it is some kind of inhibitor that suppresses her magic." Belos shook his head. "There is no such thing. However, right now the Fae is the more immediate concern. We cannot afford letting something so dangerous and unpredictable run around the Isles, especially with the Day of Unity quickly approaching. But maybe our runaway will be of help." He snapped his fingers and the doors to the throne room opened up. The demon hunters came in with their delivery. "She was tough, but we managed to get her back for you, sir," Eyepatch told him. "You all will be rewarded as promised," Belos promised them as he looked down at the prisoner before him in chains. It was the Greater Basilisk, the same one that attacked Hexside and other schools. "Now then… 'Coven Inspector', how would you like to make a deal?" The Greater Basilisk sneered at Belos. "Forget it! I refuse to betray the others!" Belos chuckled. "Oh no, I don't want that from you at all," he told the Greater Basilisk. "I am actually giving you a chance to help the others, not betray them. There is something in the Boiling Isles that does not belong here. A living embodiment of wild magic… something that I imagine would satisfy your hunger. If you hunt this being down and kill them, I promise to leave your kind in peace." The Greater Basilisk looked up at him. "How do I know you will keep your end of the bargain?" "The being that I am offering you is a Fae," he explained, getting the reptilian creature's interest. "The Fae are forbidden in the Boiling Isles because of their chaotic and unpredictable nature. They are a threat, an even bigger threat than you. Take out this Fae and you will earn yourself not just your freedom, but the safety of your kind. You have the Titan's word." The next day Hexside was back in business as usual. As Luz walked through the entrance and headed toward her locker, she looked at the bracelet on her wrist before spotting Amity in the hallways up ahead. "Amity, are you alright?" Luz waved, but Amity didn't respond and instead walked right past her. Luz turned around. "Amity…?" she asked while watching her girlfriend enter a classroom. "O-Okay, see you around." Luz continued walking, wondering why Amity ignored her. "I know she heard me, what's going on with her?" The bell soon screamed and Luz made it to her history class which she was taking along with her Bard Track periods and other courses. As she took her seat, she saw Gus coming with Willow and Luz realized that she had almost forgotten that she and Willow both shared this class. And since there were no other seats available, Gus and Willow sat near Luz. "Hey guys," Luz greeted. "Nice seeing you two… again." "Hey Luz, is King feeling better after last night?" Gus asked her. "Yeah, is he okay?" Willow also asked. "Yeah, he talked it out with me and my mom last night," Luz said. The snake teacher cleared his throat to get the attention of his class. "Alright, now we're going to be learning about an important outbreak from Boiling Isles history: Were-Fever!" he declared, showing a slide depicting the outbreak on a screen. "During the Savage Ages, were-beings of all kinds like werewolves, were-cats, and were-elephants ran rampant. No one knows how this outbreak originated though. It could be a loose curse, it could have started with a bite from a demon dog, or it could have been a magical prank gone wrong. But the most common theory is that the source of the outbreak… was a curse." Hearing the lesson made Luz feel a bit uncomfortable. She knew it was just a lesson, but she kept fidgeting with her bracelet and thinking about the… thing that she transformed into. "Hey, are you okay?" Willow whispered to Luz. Luz looked at her friend. "Y-Yeah, I'm fine," she lied in a whisper, though she couldn't help but remember a time when she had gotten Willow hurt… Luz jumped up as she kicked the mule demon girl under her jaw. She has been fighting against the older girls that were antagonizing them as Luz got held by the redhead from behind. "Luz!" Willow cried out, only to get tackled by the ferret girl. "Get 'er, sis!" the blue haired ferret shouted. The redhead restraining Luz puts her in a choke hold. "You get what you deserve, round ears," she said as Luz kicked around, shouting and yelling. "Don't… you… freaking… touch me!" Luz bit the arm of the girl, causing the redhead to let go. "My arm-" She didn't finish as Luz punched her in the face, causing her to fall and spit out a tooth. But Luz wasn't finished as she climbed on top of the bully and started to repeatedly punch her. The blue haired ferret let Willow to help the blonde mule demon try to pull Luz off their friend. But Luz swiped her hand to smack and scratch the two away from her. "Luz, stop!" Willow went to stop Luz, but as she tried to grab her- SMACK! Luz heard a cry, making her stop beating the redhead girl. She looked behind her and saw a pair of broken glasses on the ground, then she looked up to see Willow in tears. She was holding her cheek, a scratch mark across it "Willow… I…" Luz stood up, she couldn't believe what she did. She looked at her own bloodied hands, then at the older girls who were either knocked out or wincing in pain. Luz, realizing in shock what had just happened, ran away. 'Why would she ever want to be my friend after that?' Luz thought to herself while staring at the bracelet on her wrist. 'I need this, because if I were to ever lose control and hurt someone that I care about like Willow or Gus or Amity… I would never forgive myself.' She wasn't even listening to the teacher's lesson anymore, instead thinking about all of her regrets… and secrets. During Abominations class Amity and Jerbo were taking notes while Snope lectured about the origins of Abominations. Soon the bell screamed class was dismissed. "Nice class, huh Amity?" Jerbo asked and Amity looked at him. "Why are you talking to me?" she asked. "Amity," Snope said, stopping the Blight girl where she stood. "Could I have a moment of your time?" Amity complied while Jerbo left, feeling confused and a little hurt by Amity's attitude. "You have been doing well in class, which is no surprise," Snope told her. "However, I am wondering why you suddenly seem so… put off." "I'm fine, sir," Amity replied. "You say that, but I'm not sure if you mean it," he said to an indifferent Amity. "It's great for a student like you to be at the top of her classes, getting good grades is important. But your well being is even more important. And this change in attitude today… it worries me." "A Blight should only aim to be at the top," Amity told him. "I'm aware of that," Snope said. "I used to work with your father and he is a brilliant man. You're brilliant like him, but you are still your own person and different from him in so many ways. Which is why your needs are important. Is there anything you want to tell me about?" Amity shook her head. "No, everything is fine." She walked out of the classroom, leaving a concerned Snope. 'You shouldn't have brushed him off like that,' the voice of the real Amity said to her inner self that was now in control. 'Quiet,' Inner Amity told her, looking down at her scroll to see more texts from Luz. 'Ugh, she keeps bothering us with these texts.' 'Please, PLEASE don't break up with her!' Real Amity begged and Inner Amity sighed. 'As much as I want to for our sake, I can't,' Inner Amity admitted. 'Our feelings for her are too strong. But there must be a way to get rid of them…' She then saw a classroom up ahead and she got an idea. 'What are you thinking about?' Real Amity demanded, only to realize what Inner Amity was planning. 'No… no, this is… you can't! If you do this, you'll get hurt as well!' Inner Amity ignored her. 'If you aren't going to be quiet, then I don't want you around. But I know where you can go.' She suppressed Real Amity, sending her into the depths of her mindscape. Once she was silenced, Inner Amity decided to look for someone to help her. And she knew the perfect friend for it… In her mindscape, the real Amity found herself pushed into a dark void. Light slowly filled the void and she looked around, finding herself in a familiar setting. "This is… this is my room?" She noticed the toys and party decorations around. "This is-" "A memory." Amity turned and saw someone she didn't recognize. "Who… who are you?" "Well I'm not Hypnos if that's what you're thinking. Let's say that I've been around in your mind for quite some time. You're here because you were suppressed by your inner self, who is now in the driver's seat instead of you. She sees this as getting back at you for suppressing her lately before that cursed Hall of Mirrors gave me the chance to take control away from you." "My… inner self?" Amity asked. "You know, the gatekeeper and guardian of your mindscape. A metaphysical manifestation of your thoughts and memories. Usually your inner self wouldn't be like this, but as I said I've been around in your mind for some time." They chuckled. "It was quite easy to push her in the right direction, especially after your mugging. You have quite a lot of baggage, don't you? Mother issues, peer pressure, high expectations, trauma… no wonder it wasn't very hard to get your inner self to this breaking point." "You've been doing this?" Amity asked in shock. "Get out of my mind! These are my private thoughts!" "Oh, see, I don't have to oblige to your mortal rules," they spoke as they marched over to. Amity. "They do not apply to me. Want to know why I am here? Because I am hungry. And you are my feast. Your pain, your guilt, and your regret will sustain me. It will all be mine. You will be mine. Because when I am done here, there will no longer be an Amity Blight. Some have called me an emotional vampire, but here in the mindscape I consider myself a god over everyone in the Boiling Isles. Including the children. Especially the children." Amity's eyes widened in fear. "But you may call me… the Inner Demon." Skara had planned to go to Bump's office later that day, but as she stepped out of Hex Theory she spotted Amity walking up to her. "Amity?" Skara asked, noticing her friend's indifferent expression. "Skara, you're just who I need right now," Amity told her. "You and Amelia took the memory photo class last semester, right?" "Uh… yeah…" Skara replied, wondering why Amity would ask her that. "Hey, I'm about to meet up with-" "Can it wait?" Amity asked her, hearing her scroll buzzing but ignoring it. "I just need you to… help find a few memories so that I can get rid of some distractions." "Distractions?" Skara asked, confused. "What do you mean-" "I need you now, it won't take too long," Amity said, grabbing Amity by the wrist and leading her away. Skara followed, though she looked unsure. It was lunch time for Luz, who watched Willow and Gus talking on the other side of the cafeteria. Gus was trying to figure out who to interview for his journalism class and Willow was trying to help him. "A snail for your thoughts?" Viney asked as she sat down next to Viney. "Hey Vines," Luz said, turning to her. "I didn't see you at the carnival yesterday." "Puddles ate something he shouldn't have so I had to take care of that," Viney explained, noticing Willow from across the room. "Have you two talked?" "A little, but… I don't know," Luz admitted. "A part of me thinks that Willow and I are better off not being friends, especially since we both have been hanging out with different people lately. Willow deserves better friends." Viney put her hand on Luz's shoulder. "You mean how she has been hanging out with Amelia and Skara more? Luz, she can be friends with them and you at the same time. And whatever made you think that you don't deserve to be Willow's friend, it is her choice who she wants to be friends with. Just talk to her already." "But what if-" "Just do it, or I will drag you over there myself," Viney said, crossing her arms. Luz sighed, knowing that she couldn't avoid this. She walked over to the table Willow was at and sat down. "Hey, Willow-Wisp. You got a moment?" "Of course," Willow nodded. "Well… where do I start?" Luz asked while looking down, then looking up at Willow. "I… wasn't a fair friend. In fact, I don't think I was even a good friend. You're the nicest, kindest person I know and I'm just the bad girl. I've been doing my best to become a better person and I have been giving you some space. But without me, you ended up gaining new friends who are probably better to you than I ever was." She sighed. "Seeing you hanging out with Skara, Amelia and Cat made me realize that you don't need me. I think I was the one who needed you… and I ruined that. And I'm scared that I might end up getting you hurt." "Luz…" Willow said. "You may think that my new friends are better to me than you are, but they have made mistakes just like you." She thought of how Skara had ended her friendship with Bo. "And like your mistakes, they ended up hurting people. Nobody is perfect, Luz. Not even me. There were actually times when I enjoyed how you would get back at Amity or Boscha or anyone else who messed with us. Times when I didn't try to stop you even when I should have. But I am trying to be a better person now, just like you are. Even Amity seems to be trying to be a better person, she even apologized to me if you can believe it." "She did?" Luz asked. "Spending time with you seems to be changing Amity," Willow continued. "And change is something that we are all capable of, Luz. I know you have changed and I am so proud of you for it, Luz. But I know that no matter how much you change, you will always be the same girl that I originally made friends with. Rough around the edges, but always with the best of intentions. And that is what I like about you, Luz. And I get why you're scared that you may end up getting me hurt. It wouldn't be the first time…" Kid Luz was in the Owl House, washing the blood off her fingers and knuckles. She was in tears, thinking that there was no way that Willow would forgive her. "Luz!" her mom called. "Willow's here and she wants to talk to you!" Luz froze before starting to panic. Though she tried to hold it in, she ultimately broke down completely by laying on the sink cabinet while crying. Soon Eda and Willow came in and saw her in this state. "Luz? Luz, calm down," Eda said as she held Luz, trying to comfort her. "There, there." She patted her daughter on the back. Luz sniffed and saw that Willow had a bandage on her face.. This only made Luz feel worse and she worried that she might have left a scar on Willow. After Luz had calmed down, she and Willow sat on the couch while Eda made snacks for them. Willow was the first to speak. "Luz, I-" "I'm sorry!" Luz blurted out. "I'm sorry that I scratched you. I… I don't know why I acted like that. Those girls grabbed me and I just… got out of control! I'll understand if you don't want to be friends with me. You're Gus's friend and… I don' t know if we could be. I mean, who wants to be friends with a human anyway?" "I do," Willow told her. "Because you're a good person, Luz. A bit rough around the edges, but a good person nonetheless." "But… I hurt you and-" "Hurt me? No, some loose bullcat got loose, mauled some girls, and scratched me," Willow told Luz with a wink. "You...covered for me?" Luz asked, realizing what Willow had done. "Well I need to think up something to tell my parents and the guards that came to the scene," Willow pointed out with a smirk. Luz managed to smile and give Willow a friendly punch to the arm. "Looks like I got a good cover girl." "And you can't let this incident get to you, Luz. We can still be friends," Willow assures her, attempting to give Luz a friendly punch as well. "Whoa, I didn't know that happened," Gus admitted. "You were recovering from a visit to the dentist at the time, Gus," Willow told him before turning to Luz. "I've seen you grow a lot since the Moonlight Conjuring, Luz. You may mess up, but you always try to make up for your mistakes. I want you to know that I don't think any less of you. And even though I have made new friends, I still miss hanging out with my old ones." Luz smiled and sighed. "I've missed you too. So are we good now?" Willow answered by putting her elbow on the table with her hand up. "Want to see how strong I got?" she asked with a smirk, letting Luz know that everything was alright. "Yeah, bring it on, wing-witch," Luz replied with a smirk, clasping her hand onto Willow's as the two started a thumb war. Watching this, Gus couldn't help but tear up. "Finally...everyone's friends again." The memory photo classroom was empty except for two young witchlings. Skara had been told to extract memory photos from Amity and she had pulled out a total of five, each showing a significant part of Amity's life. Including… her first kiss with Luz. Skara was surprised to see Amity kissing Luz, while Amity looked indifferently at the photos. "You can go now, Skara," the Blight girl told her friend. "Um… what do you plan to do with these photos?" Skara asked, concerned. "Nothing to concern herself with, Skara," Amity said, pointing at a photo with her finger and starting to draw a spell circle. "Wait!" Skara's hand grabbed Amity's wrist. "Amity, I know there's something going on with you and that it started last semester! But whatever it is, you can't tamper with your memories like this! You say you're fine, but really you're not! We need to talk about this!" "I told you that this is nothing to concern yourself with," Amity repeated, struggling to pull her hand away. "Now let go of me!" "Amity, if you do this, I'll tell Bump about the knife!" Skara shouted. SMACK! Amity used her other hand to slap Skara, causing the bard girl to hit the floor. Amity turned to the photos, drew a spell circle and set fire to the photo with her first kiss. "Better," Amity said with a smirk, but that smirk disappeared when she saw the fire spread to the other photos. "Oh no…" She started to feel dizzy and tried to get a hold of herself. "What have I done…?" Skara got up, recovering from the smack. But then she saw the burning photos. "Oh shit!" Skara shouted, quickly using the snow spell that Bo had taught her to put out the flames. The flames died out, but the photos had been reduced to dust. Skara heard a thud and turned around to see that Amity had collapsed. "AMITY!" "…And then she just scoffed at me for no apparent reason," Jerbo said as he, Viney and Barcus joined Luz, Willow and Gus for lunch. "This doesn't make sense," Willow commented. "I mean, the old Amity might have acted like that but it is almost like someone pulled a switch in her head. Something's up." "She hasn't responded to my texts all day and ignored me earlier," Luz mentioned. "Was there something I did wrong?" "Hey, relax, maybe something just came up with her," Viney suggested. "Yeah, I bet everything's going to be fine," Gus agreed. "Ugh, why does everyone always say that?" Jerbo complained. "Whenever someone says that they're fine or that things are fine, it obviously isn't fine. Now I just know that things are going to somehow get worse." The cafeteria doors suddenly flew open. "SOMEBODY HELP!" Skara cried out and everyone turned to see her carrying the unconscious Amity. "AMITY!" Luz and Willow shouted, both girls immediately out of their seats and running toward Amity and Skara. "What happened?" Willow asked. "We… we were in photo class a-a-and…" Skara was in tears, while Luz looked worried to death. "She… she burned her memory photos… she's not waking up!" Though nobody in the cafeteria would be able to hear him, the Inner Demon was laughing.
