The Battle of Armageddon was the legendary final conflict between the Forces of Light and the Forces of Darkness. The event was even foreseen and foretold by the Elder Gods among all both mortals and immortals alike, who feared the Great Battle that would end all battles, and even all of reality itself. It took place in the southlands of the realm of Edenia as the Apocalypse begins, to decide the fate of the universe. The battle occurred next to the Pyramid of Argus.
The Battle of Armageddon is based on the same epic and legendary conflict with the same name "Armageddon" among its different aliases and names, said and foretold in many religions (both pagan and monotheistic) and doomsday prophecies that it is the ultimate battle that will end all wars, and yet even worse, destroy all traces of life forever.
The conflict was shown in the intro for Mortal Kombat: Armageddon with its aftermath being shown in Mortal Kombat (2011)'s intro.
Battle of Armageddon once again made an appearance in the final chapter of the story mode of Mortal Kombat 1. This time it is a battle between Forces of Light, assembled by Fire God Liu Kang and Forces of Darkness, assembled by Titan Shang Tsung. This battle was also fought for the fate of all Timelines.
Battle[]
While the two opposing sides fought, an ancient pyramid rose amidst them. Atop the pyramid was Blaze in his final form. Any individual's defeat of Blaze would grant them their greatest wish and even ultimate power. As it became a race to the top of the pyramid for every kombatant involved, two individuals made their way to the pyramid to defeat Blaze. The sons of Argus, Taven and Daegon, were assigned to prevent Armageddon by either destroying the Kombatants or stripping them of their powers. One of these two results would occur when one of them defeated the firespawn, and it was determined based on the armor each of them wore, left behind for them by their mother, Delia. Eventually, Taven confronted Blaze, but was killed by him. Shao Kahn was the one who defeated Blaze.
In the end, Raiden and Shao Kahn were left as the last two standing kombatants. They battled on top of the Pyramid, where Shao Kahn - who had his powers increased - easily defeated Raiden (whose powers were weakened by fighting in a foreign realm). After taunting the Thunder God that the Elder Gods no longer threatened him, Kahn prepared to finish Raiden off and consume all realms. Just before Raiden was killed, he sent a mental message to his past self, warning of the impending Armageddon. As a result of this, Raiden's past self managed to defeat Shao Kahn permanently (though at a heavy cost) and prevented the Battle of Armageddon from ever taking place.
Second Battle[]
After Liu Kang became Keeper of Time and restarted history, his New Era was later brought under conflict by the same Shang Tsung whom he'd fought for control over the Hourglass, both having been victorious in separate timelines. Realizing that their timelines are not the only ones, both Titans scoured the multiverse for other Titans who'd won similar battles, dividing their forces into forces of good and evil. The two armies met once more at the Pyramid in Titan Shang Tsung's timeline and engaged in a second Battle of Armageddon.
During the battle, Liu Kang and an ally fought their way through the Order of Darkness and defeated Shang Tsung, destroying both him and his Hourglass. Afterwards, the timelines were separated once more. However, a Titan Havik emerged from the ashes, reveling in the chaos that the second Battle of Armageddon had wrought, and vowed that the next would be even more devastating and long-lasting.
Final Kombat[]
It was first spoken in fragments by the Elder Gods to Delia many eons ago. She was discussing her visions with her significant other, Argus, at the Edenian sanctuary, even the fate of their sons, Taven and Daegon, the creation of Blaze, and the erection of the Pyramid where the war would take place. It's been kept secret until Raiden began to receive disturbing visions and his amulet gifted by the Elder Gods began to crack and shatter! He then told his troubles to his topmost disciple, Liu Kang.
Murmurs got out as Kung Lao, Aiko, Nightwolf and the Shaolin received Raiden's terrors. He then made a summons for several other warriors. Meanwhile, Orin awakened Taven after many ages of suspended animation and alerted him on the competition with Daegon before he blacked out. His intel was sparce before he sent Taven on his Konquest for his parents' weapon and armor in each of the temples.
Raiden summoned half of his best warriors, with Fujin being late, to the Dragon Grotto, and everyone dreaded of the rise of their enemies as well as the upcoming battle. He suggested an espionage to the Netherrealm, believing Shinnok to be responsible. They went there and after meeting Caro and Taven near the Spire, they soon came across the fallen, weakened Elder God; he made a dark replica of Aiko's heart gem and thru it displayed these visions onto Raiden for what's ahead, as his stronger double and Kahn are conspiring this said battle. With that intel they left and spread the word, while the doppelganger hatched a plan with Daegon.
Orin and Caro warned Taven the quest was a setup, and there's more than what he found out... Raiden asked Caro to head to Yin Yang Island to see who the mysterious Oriental was; he told him and even he knew as he watched thru the mystical portal with an elder Edenian. Fujin and his party eventually received word from his tardiness, and everyone was making last preps. Edenia organized a banquet advent to the event while Raiden and Fujin put his most skilled warriors thru the same exercises before the first tournament. All except Aiko passed while Frederick turned it down.
The Forces of Light were gathered on the Netherwing en route to the southern crater where Raiden received a vision as he was defeated by Kahn who were the last survivors atop a pyramid, uttering a cryptic message, He must win. He discussed this with his brother, and he figured it'd be possible to combine with a mortal. As the prophesized Chosen One, he did just that with Liu Kang!! He declared to Aiko this'd be his final kombat! After the Oriental saved Orin from Quan's ambush, the quartet watched over the war. Minutes before it, Taven was sporadically warped by flame which was Blaze driving off the feud between him and Daegon. After Taven won, Blaze warned the quest was corrupted and only he must win against him. He grew bewildered he wasn't sure if Blaze would kill them or spare them with a coin toss; either destroying them all or stripping their powers. Nevertheless, he triggered the Pyramid to rise, and Blaze declared Mortal Kombat!
The Forces of Darkness invaded with the Light, until Fire God Liu Kang made his mark driving away the infantry! Each warrior clashed in a bloody war, until Blaze erupted! The warriors were on a killing spree, and only Liu, Lao, Taven, Fujin and Nightwolf weren't persuaded by the so-called prize nor caught in the crossfire! It was in vain as their comrades fell, until Liu called the Chameleons to warp the quartet up while Nightwolf drove the heroes back. They fought off all intruders, and Liu failed to convince Blaze that everyone has a right to their own destiny instead of going by blind obedience of his creator. Taven tossed up the fabled sword and Liu defeated the elemental, resulting him to self-destruct! Liu drove the remaining trio back understanding those cryptic words, I must win! He changed the firestorm's trajectory and made a cocoon to protect his allies from it and forced the flames up to prevent extended destruction to them and the realms! It resulted in Liu's and Raiden's sacrifices and 2/3 of the Pyramid was incinerated! Thankfully, since the weakened Shinnok received his amulet by Hanzo and used his black gem, his memories brought back Cetrion which conjured a rainstorm from her remorseful tears, healing and reviving the heroes!
Some repercussions were made, as after the merger of the Fire God, he combined the comatose Kitana's heart with Aiko's and hoped for Caro to give it to the two elders in Yin Yang Island. The body faded from the Grotto, and even the elder Edenian was affected by Raiden's sudden electrocution. By the time Raiden and Liu sacrificed themselves, Blaze destroyed them as well as the sacred amulet, even the one the Oriental was holding! The weak Shinnok's mind snapped, close to death, before he clutched his amulet and had a meltdown which revived Cetrion! Thanks to the stored memories of both heart gems, it revived the shocked Kitana, and soon Caro made a red portal to instantly transport Aiko onto the island as her mind was cracking. Everything began to subside during the Elder Goddess' redemption!
Trivia[]
- Despite what the opening scene of Armageddon depicted, the Kombatants picked a side based on their strongest motives: achieving power, defeating a rival, saving the realms, or defecting based on morality. This excludes Taven, Daegon, and Blaze.
- Raiden was the one who survived the race to the top of the pyramid the longest before being killed by Shao Kahn. The second one was Shang Tsung whom was about to reach the top first before being presumably killed by the zombified Liu Kang.
- The people killed during the Armageddon scene are Li Mei, Sheeva and Kenshi. In the MK 2011 Story Mode opening scene, several bodies are shown with weapons from other fighters lodged in them (i.e. Scorpion with the Kori Blade of Sub-Zero in his spine), although it is unknown whether or not the fighter truly killed them or not, as the killing blows were never officially shown. The opening scene does shows many kombatants dead, however it does specifically show both Shao Kahn and Raiden alive and battling at the apex of the pyramid, but after Raiden sends his warning to his past self, he is killed by Shao Kahn.
- There were some inconsistencies in the aftermath scene of the battle of Armageddon in Mortal Kombat (2011). For example, Stryker nearly made it to the top, originally, but in Mortal Kombat (2011), he was seen further down the pyramid.
- Due to Mortal Kombat 11's revelation of the existence of alternate timelines, it is possible both outcomes of who defeated Blaze, either Taven or Shao Kahn, took place in separate versions of events.
- Only eight characters do not appear in the Battle of Armageddon, these being: Taven, Daegon, Goro, Moloch, Drahmin, Khameleon, Meat, and Mokap.
