Beowulf is the hero of the ancient epic poem of the same name. He also appears in the début episode of Disney's Animated Myths and Legends which aired on December 5, 1997, in which he is voiced by Jeff Bennett.

Biography[]

Little is known about Beowulf's childhood and early life. His father was a brave warrior who died when his son was young. The young Beowulf trained to become a great warrior like his father, and as a teenager, he killed an entire clan of giants in the Orkneys. This later led to him becoming a brave hero.

Appearance and personality[]

Beowulf is a tall, muscular young man with brown hair and hazel eyes. He sports thick armour, a wolfskin cape, a black tunic, brown leather gauntlets, black trousers, brown boots with fur-lined tops and a spiked helmet (which he wears twice). He is also armed with a sword. In his older years, Beowulf's hair is a faded brown colour and he has also grown a beard. He also wears a red cloak trimmed with ermine and a golden crown. Beowulf is a brave, kind and selfless individual. He is always willing to help others, even at the cost of his own life.

Beowulf

Beowulf, and his friend Wiglaf, lead a band of sailors to the kingdom of King Hrothgar to battle the monster Grendel, who has been terrorising the kingdom for years. While he is in Hrothgar's kingdom, he becomes attracted to the king's wife Queen Wealtheow.

During the night, Grendel attacks the hall. Beowulf-who was feigning sleep-attacks him unarmed, as the monster is impervious to weapons. When Beowulf's men come to his aid, their weapons prove to be ineffective. Beowulf then proceeds to tear off Grendel's arm. Slowly bleeding to death, the monster flees into the night.

News spreads of Beowulf's victory. Grendel's arm is kept as a trophy and a feast is held to celebrate the monster's destruction. The festivities, however, are short-lived as Grendel's mother attacks the feasting hall. Beowulf and his men set out to kill her, too and arrive at Grendel's cave. The monster's mother arrive and Beowulf courageously fights her, however, she proves to have the upper hand. She comes close to killing Beowulf until he uses a sword to stab her in the back. He later finds Grendel's corpse and decapitates it, taking the head back to the feasting hall. The king and his people then celebrate the vanquishing of the two monsters.

Time passes and the king is called to battle. When it is later reported that the king is injured, Beowulf and his friend Wiglaf find him close to death. Hrothgar, with his final words, asks Beowulf if he will become king as he has no children of his own to pass the kingdom onto. Beowulf agrees and soon he and Wealtheow marry.
