Falcon Flyer
Captain Falcon (キャプテン・ファルコン Kyaputen Farukon?), also known by the canon name of Douglas Jay Falcon, is an F-Zero racer and a renowned intergalactic bounty hunter from Port Town. By the age of 36, Captain Falcon had built a reputation as one of the best bounty hunters in the galaxy, one that has earned him many enemies. Falcon joined F-Zero, desiring to fuel his competitive drive, with his own machine, the Blue Falcon. During his long career, he has consistently thwarted the plans of Black Shadow and other evil forces, both on and off the Grand Prix circuits.
Much of Falcon's past is shrouded in mystery.
F-Zero games[]
Captain Falcon made his debut appearance in F-Zero, released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System on November 21, 1990. An eight-page comic was included in the manual of the game, containing the original character designs of Captain Falcon, the three other original pilots, and the F-Zero announcer, Mr. Zero. Taking place in the year 2560, the comic depicted one of Captain Falcon's bounty missions. The comic contained the only scenes of Captain Falcon ever using his sidearm and piloting the Falcon Flyer. In the game, Falcon competes against Dr. Stewart, Samurai Goroh, and Pico. Depending on who you play, either Falcon will win, or one of the others will. most likely the former.
Falcon doesn't return for the next two Grands Prix in BS F-Zero Grand Prix, and BS F-Zero Grand Prix 2 nor does the other three racers.
F-Zero X[]
Three years prior to the lore in F-Zero X, Captain Falcon’s DNA is stolen while he is hospitalized following an accident in a previous F-Zero Grand Prix three years prior. Black Shadow's organization in the main games, BS Group, used the DNA to create a clone of Captain Falcon, Blood Falcon, but also stole the subengine of the Blue Falcon at this time to create the Blood Hawk.
As the three-year suspension was lifted for a new Grand Prix, Falcon would then compete with 29 other racers for the Grand Prix, along with the other three racers from the original game, his nemesis Black Shadow, and the mysterious Blood Falcon. According to F-Zero GX, Captain Falcon won.
F-Zero GX[]
In F-Zero GX, Captain Falcon is 37 years old and the sitting champion of the F-Zero Grand Prix, boosting his already high popularity even higher. In the games' story mode, F-Zero GX's story mode begins with Falcon training for the Grand Prix, followed by racing his rival, Samurai Goroh, in a desert canyon and being forced to enter the bet race under the disguise of 'Famicom' (a reference to Nintendo's first home console). After winning said bet race, Falcon notices Black Shadow attacking the Lightning area on the news. Falcon makes his way to stop him but is delayed by a group of thugs lead by Michael Chain. After dealing with Chain's gang, Falcon enters a facility to save Jody Summer. His escape is a close one as the core was set to overload and detonate, with said facility going into lockdown procedures. With Jody out of harm's way, he confronts Black Shadow. The evil overlord, with the help of Blood Falcon, binds Falcon and traps him inside his vehicle, strapping a bomb to the Blue Falcon that will detonate if the Blue Falcon goes too slowly. Falcon managed to survive, by driving the vehicle straight off an unfinished road and right under a crane, knocking the bomb off.
Falcon later attended the Grand Prix, where he emerged victorious. After receiving the champion's belt, he witnessed Black Shadow being punished by his master, Deathborn, for his incompetence. Deathborn challenges Falcon to a one-on-one race for ownership of both belts. Before said race occurs, Deathborn reveals his plan to take over the universe, revealing the energies of light and dark are condensed in each belt, and that when combined, provide ultimate power that will turn him into a god-like being, able to lay waste Falcon's galaxy in an instant. Falcon swears to take him down. Falcon stays true to his word, and Deathborn apparently dies. Both belts unite into one, and Falcon vows to keep winning so he can protect the belt from the forces of evil.
At his garage, Falcon is greeted by the Creator. Falcon figures out the Creator was behind everything, though they do not elaborate on their motives. They challenge Falcon to a race, where, if they win, will rip out Falcon's soul and turn it into their creation, implying that he would replace Deathborn. Falcon defeats even them. Screaming, the Creator disappears, though whether they actually die or decide to let Falcon go, honoring (but no less angered by) his victory, is unclear. Falcon then takes off his helmet and relaxes.
F-Zero: GP Legend and Climax[]
Based on the anime television series of the same name, Captain Falcon's anime counterpart, Andy Summer, shares the spotlight with Rick Wheeler in F-Zero GP Legend and F-Zero Climax.
In the anime-inspired games F-Zero: GP Legend and Climax, little is known about Captain Falcon beyond his popularity in the Grand Prix. His machine is so popular that it is virtually the symbol of the F-Zero races. His true identity is Andy Summer, who goes by the false alias of Bart Lemming (Bert/Burt in the English dub) who often gives advice to Rick Wheeler and his friends. He ultimately trains Rick Wheeler in racing but aims to pass the title of Captain Falcon to him.
He has his own story path in GP Legend though the game itself is very loosely based on the anime. He was originally hired by an old friend to escort Dr. Clash in Mute City. However, he then encountered Zoda, who captured Dr. Clash and began to pursue him with the help of Rick Wheeler, whom he met for the first time and was confused by his claims of having "known Zoda for centuries", but they wound up accidentally capturing a decoy instead. He then encountered Samurai Goroh in Red Canyon while attempting to continue his pursuit, but Goroh accused Falcon of poisoning him and raced him. Goroh ran off afterwards.
Captain Falcon returned to Port Town empty-handed, only to be confronted by Blood Falcon. He beat Blood Falcon in a race, but his machine broke down afterward. Lisa Brilliant then offered her help to him, and whether or not Blood Falcon was beaten on the first try, he either accepted her help and then defeated Blood Falcon in a race with Jody Summer's help in the Sand Ocean, or he refused her help and decided to fix his machine with a boost blast, realizing that he had only one lead left. Afterwards, Captain Falcon made his way to Lightning and raced Black Shadow, whom Falcon knew had captured Clash due to his being Blood Falcon's master. After defeating Black Shadow, Jody was able to save Dr. Clash and thanked Captain Falcon for the evil he prevented Black Shadow from unleashing. But Captain Falcon insisted he was only doing the job he was hired for and resumed his anonymous career as a bounty hunter. He then participates in the Grand Prix and depending on what character was chosen for the story mode, he will either win or lose.
In F-Zero Climax, the anime Captain Falcon's alias Berserker is unlockable. After Andy passes down the mantle of Captain Falcon to Rick Wheeler (along with the Blue Falcon), he takes on a new alias known as the Berserker and races in the Red Bull.
Falcon Densetsu/Legend of Falcon[]
The anime ran for 51 episodes, aired on Japan's TV Tokyo from 2003-2004. Captain Falcon, voiced by David Wills in the English version and Hideyuki Tanaka in the Japanese version, was featured in most episodes. Fifteen English-language episodes were produced before the show's cancellation in America. The series told the story of Captain Falcon and his best friend and rival, Rick Wheeler.
Unlike in the video games, "Captain Falcon" is a title given to a person. Throughout most of the anime, the Falcon House owner Bart Lemming (later revealed to be Andy Summer, Jody Summer's long-lost brother) held this title until he died in the final episode, then it was passed onto Ryu Suzaku (Rick Wheeler). The character of Captain Falcon is generally seen as the stoic and mysterious hero. Regardless of whether he is still an active bounty hunter, he is still feared by many criminals, especially in Port Town. Although he does not appear in every episode, he plays a significant role in the series: his main goal is to stop the efforts of the Dark Million Organization. It was also revealed he was a spy for the evil organization disguised as a hooded figure named Berserker, infiltrating Dark Million.
Ikran's F-Zero timeline[]
In it, he's only known as Douglas Jay Falcon, NOT Burt Lemming nor Andy Summer!!
Of course, Capt. Falcon was renowned as a racing elitist and renowned bounty hunter, even before the original Grand Prix, and having a bitter rivalry with Goroh. Unlike Tinsel, he did advance to the finals, and got involved in the Horrific Accident; Black Shadow had his chance to steal his DNA to conjure Blood Falcon and make the Hell Hawk with his subengine. He too won the X competition and the GX competition, with help from Tinsel in the latter. Same thing went in Falcon's Followers, when Yugi, Joey, and Tinsel chased after him and assisted on his missions, even meeting Black Shadow for the first time. He also fought against Deathborn at the Underworld before the Blue-Eyes Shining Dragon made its mark. Even against the Creator and saved the heroes after they were trapped in their Cards. Tinsel advised him he mustn't always work alone, and he must have someone to watch his back; he eventually had a change of heart rather than function as a loner and hoped someday would carry on his legacy.
At some time, Dr. Stewart and Jody had Falcon visit the Task Force Base, and he handed over the schematics for the Dragon Bird and find a gifted racer to handle it. He told them the universe was born after the Big Bang and 6 celestial bodies were created with immense power, Reactor Mights. It turned out one was split in two, and with the combined Belts, one was forged again, and Falcon received one and learned the Booster Fire technique. He decided to install a Reactor Might inside the Bird; eventually one was found in the Comet since it was a prototype. They'd decided Rick shall be the Wuji and the chosen racer of the Bird, since Zoda had been resurrected in fear of the savior's coming, and since Jody revived him to have the upper hand against the maniac.
He did meet him in several races, even those in Planet Nintae and Forno, only as a bitter rival. He didn't quite open up to him, until he noticed the Task Force went missing. After winning the death race over Goroh and his family, he depended on Tinsel to bring them back safely, especially Rick. He also told her the original owners of the Mighty Hurricane/Typhoon can't be found since the pilots were banished by Deathborn after the Horrific Accident. He managed to escape from the mayhem at Port Town and met up with Rick and Tinsel escorting them to Mute City and grieved a little over Clash's suicide. He then discovered there's a Reactor Might inside the Dragon Bird and Silver Comet, after requesting Clash to do so. He then made Rick his official disciple, even teaching him the Booster Fire move! Eventually he taught Tinsel to master it, saying she must use her icy heart and fight against the sickness with her cold demeanor for the sake of her friends feeding her motivation! He'd won up to the Lightning Championship, reunited with Roy Hughes as a cyborg, and warned Rick even Dark Million has this technique. He also made Rick his official wingman as he beat him in his Aero Dive and Phantom Road simulations; he never wanted to state in an interview he'd retire and pass on his legacy to someone, but ever since Black Shadow was resurrected, he decided to do so.
His fears were justified as Black Shadow used a double Black Fire and wreaked havoc! He bailed the course and escaped with the Falcon Flyer to Dark Star. He and Tinsel helped Rick resist the Dark Reactor Mights seeping into his mind and helped him and Rodney bail out! He soon revealed that Deathborn was responsible for all the chaos. and then enhanced the Dragon Bird EX with two Mights. He finally went into the Flyer and led the Galaxy Runner to Dark Star, and he relied on the Duelists for the infiltration! They were successful, and only the Flyer's crew advanced. With the Ultimate Belt, he was resistant to the Skull's and Black Shadow's umbrakinesis, only to buy time for Rick to save Tinsel. By the time the shell shattered and unveiled as Deathborn, Yami was powerless and reverted back to Yugi; at that point, Falcon explained of the legend:
The universe was born after the Big Bang, 6 Reactor Mights were created, as were three elements: the Bull, Falcon and Dragon; the Yin, Yang and Wuji, hence the black, white, and grey. Falcon inherited the traits of agility, being keen, inheriting the light, the opposing element of wrath, darkness, and fear. The Wuji was neutral, without extreme, vulnerable to either side which was why Falcon trained Rick as a way to keep him away from temptation. Rick was chosen as the savior to help turn the tides of the war to either side, since the Yin and Yang can't destroy themselves. He then headed to the Core and disabled it, allowing Rick to destroy it using all his strength and the 2 Mights. Joey's fused Black Skull Dragon wiped out the last of his clones who'd pursue and destroy Falcon. Then, the elitist took the fight to Deathborn and sacrificed himself using a Falcon Punch, forcing them both into oblivion! Since then, he wound up in the heavens with Haruka's kindred spirit, Dr. Clash, and soon Yami still watching over his disciple to this day! He even guided him thru limbo after Rick succumbed to the T-Virus in his first bounty-hunting mission. And Rick is known as Young Captain Falcon. He even made a salute in Rick's peripheral vision as he donned on his new attire for the first time; even though only Rick saw him thinking it was only his imagination as implied in the second deleted Lap. It was a good thing Rick learned similar techniques to Falcon's own brawling moves, albeit electrified. And it was official after the wedding his base became the permanent quarters for Rick and Tinsel Wheeler.
Daemon Rising with a...SMASH!![]
Capt. Falcon was first seen at the Big Blue track within the Smash System, and Mario, Link, Young Link, and Zelda arrived after he won. He was about to receive his trophy and prize money; however, he was irritated as he received the call of duty from Samus and Master Hand. Since the world and the Net were about to be threatened by a super virus, Daemon. He cruised to the Kongo Jungle though Donkey Kong was nowhere to be seen. Mario decided to trek up his treehouse and awaken him but to no avail. Then, Link Jr. came up with an idea on stealing his bananas and allowing the aroma to spread thru the air as the machine takes off. Sure enough it worked, and just as the Smashers were ambushed by DK, Falcon unleashed his own Falcon Punch before his Giant Punch, making him soar and crash into a tree and be stung by a beehive! Falcon convinced DK to join the new tourney, and he was a bit flabbergasted he'd be so desperate to save his bananas.
Falcon met with the other Smashers at the rendezvous point at Peach's Castle, and Master Hand announced 92% of the Net was infected. Their friends encouraged them to keep fighting, and so he took the Falcon Flyer with Ness in tow to Mainframe! It was then struck by the Guardian Fleet, and they were separated. Needing a place to land, he steered into the Super Computer, and he and Ness were ambushed by Guardian Sentries. They fought them off with everything they had, then the Prime Guardian, Daecon, had dropped onto the scene! The Blue Falcon sped away, barely getting hit by his staff, even the infection! The machine bailed, then he snapped, signaling the Flyer to catch them in its maw and escape!
They made a quick turnaround, and the Clock Tower was vacant. That was till Akari and Game & Watch dropped in via Gateway. Soon came Kirby and AndrAIa by Zoom Room, and the puffball was victorious over the Game Sprite. Falcon waited to board the Flyer and head to Final Destination where Mewtwo and Samus were fighting Daemon! He dropped off the remaining trophy stand, and Samus was able to trophesize the super virus! Moments later, her infection began to spread, and hit the Flyer's outer hull causing it to nosedive onto Mainframe near the Principal Office. During the ceremony congratulating the new heroes, Falcon made the repairs, and the Smashers and Akari left Mainframe for good.
Trivia[]
- Captain Falcon is a character in Nintendo's F-Zero series of video games, co-created by Takaya Imamura and Shigeru Miyamoto. Captain Falcon has often been considered as the official main character of the series. He first appeared in the instruction manual of F-Zero, published in 1990. It was not until F-Zero X that he actually appeared in-game. Though the character's vehicle can be used in the F-Zero series, Captain Falcon himself was never actually playable until the Super Smash Bros. series. The character's only appearance outside of Nintendo games was in the anime F-Zero GP Legend. A leading but now defunct F-Zero X website says that Captain Falcon's real name is Douglas Jay Falcon.
- More intel can be found in this vid.
- Captain Falcon bears a resemblance to the comic book character Judge Dredd, who may have been the inspiration for the former. Likewise, Captain Falcon's post NES design bears further resemblance to the same inspirational character's movie design.
- Originally, Capt. Falcon was supposed to be the mascot for the SNES, and F-Zero was the secret weapon in the 16-bit war against the Genesis, using Mode 7. Takaya Imamaura said it was inspired by the Batman series, as Falcon resembled him, and the Blue Falcon was inspired by the Batmobile. Heck, much like Batman, he too has a mantle passed down to other generations.
- Captain Falcon's anime counterpart has an alias known as Bart Lemming who runs the Falcon House. It costs 280 credits of space for coffee, and 480 for breakfast. It is open from 8 am to 9 pm and sells coffee and cakes during the mornings. In addition, it also sells gum, notepads, cups and products, as stated in Lap 2 and Lap 27.
- On lap 23, Andy, as Bart, said he was born on April 10. This birthday does not apply to the Falcon from the games prior to the anime, however.
- In Lap 34, Andy's favorite food is putting tripe in a bundle and binding it with thread, as does Bart; "It could increase your perseverance and resistance," he said. There's also curry on the menu in the Falcon House. And the one thing that he hates is mushrooms.
- In Lap 35, Andy, as Bart, shares the Falcon House with Clank, Rick, and Jack. He said that the boy gets lost there often, Rick is always neat, and Jack isn't. He also wants it to be cleaned 5 times a day.
- In Lap 44, he prefers partners with black hair. His favorite pet is rabbits.
- Captain Falcon appears in the manga Denshi Yousei Abatamo Ekubo.
- In F-Zero AX, Captain Falcon's theme from F-Zero GX plays during a Victory Lap with any racer.
