Unlike in most media, Liu Kang first encountered her on the night before the first modern MK tournament within Shang's Island, along with Johnny, as they noticed her observing them, before Shang ordered Reptile to spy on them. She was seen again during the banquet for a short while before Bi-Han tested on what's to come. After eavesdropping on Goro, Shang and Kano's plots, they lost Kitana thru an Outworld portal before they wound up within a Mook ambush. She wasn't seen in a while until Shang sent her to fight Liu, in which she offered him tips on how to win the next match and to fight with all his heart. Her strategy worked as Liu tossed a bucket of water breaking the icefield and freezing Bi-Han! She then met up with Liu in Outworld after he decimated Reptile and she gave him advice on facing Shang involving the 3 tests in the Black Tower; to face his enemy, face himself, and face his worst fear. She helped confront Shang and save Sonya then observed Liu's battle against the evil sorcerer and avenging his brother, Chan.

They were successful, until Shao Kahn declared another tournament. The quintet went back to the island, although Liu and Kitana were separated. Eventually, Liu and Lao caught up with her and noticed she was in a brainwashing hold erasing some of her memories by Kahn; she observed them kill Jade and wounded Mileena but not for long. Kitana wished for Liu's success, much to Lao's jealousy. They then noticed her with Cage and Raiden broken out of their prison cells before the monks dealt with the lethal Emperor in the Koliseum; they were soon successful, and Kitana wanted to restore Edenia as Liu headed back to Earthrealm. During the trimester, Kitana reunited with Liu as they and her new team dealt with Sektor and the cybers until Kuai assisted them. Sonya, Jax, Stryker, Nightwolf and a young Aiko were recruited by Raiden as Earth's dimensional fabric was weakening. To their dismay, Kahn was revived though weakened, and 3 months later, they'd organized a rebellion to overthrow his rule in Outworld. Unfortunately, they were unsuccessful...

Kitana lamented with Liu and Asgaarth on failing to restore Edenia during her dad's anniversary of his death, then there was a Saurian invasion when Lao and an adult Aiko joined their ranks! Although Stryker decided for a respite because there'd been no activity since the failed insurrection, Liu and Kitana decided to scout the realm together. They found a chained Kano and many broken carcasses of the Shokan, Centaurs, and Tarkatans before it began to merge with Earth, blackening them out and paralyzing them. They came to in the Bell Tower, but Rain tied the comatose Edenian and lowered her to a bed of spikes while Liu fought him. He was successful but not until the Tower was collapsing! Asgaarth and a dragon jet piloted by Jax saved them! They settled down for the night until Liutana, Jax and Sonya trekked across a bridge which was ambushed by a Tarkatan horde led by Mileena and Baraka; they found out her dead mom, Sindel, was alive! They united with the other stragglers before they headed to Kahn's Fortress in their Animalities, and Liutana were the first to go fetch Sindel. Kitana was intimidated but encouraged by Liu to knock her to her senses, although she nearly died as she was strangled, then saved as Liu combusted Sindel's hair and comatose her. They convinced Nightwolf and Lao to keep her alive, and soon Sheeva. By the time Liu was successful on defeating Kahn for good, Kitana promised to restore Edenia and visit him; unfortunately, she didn't know he moved to America to recruit future warriors.

They reunited finally after a couple years but under bitter circumstances, as Edenia was attacked by Quan Chi and Shinnok; Kitana was also glad Jade was resurrected too. The trio separated from the group thru the prison tunnels until Liu followed Lao's hollers as he and Aiko were being dragged to the Netherrealm. Liu reunited with Kitana after he helped Raiden and Fujin decimate Shinnok, and they too watched Raiden's departure from Earthrealm as he attained Elder God status. A year later, Kitana met up with Lao and Aiko as they'd stated that Liu'd fallen against the Deadly Alliance, but his soul was spared by Raiden! They were effective leaders to the group as they traversed thru Outworld to Shang's Palace and were successful defeating their enemies. However, victory was short-lived as Onaga won over the team! Liu observed Kitana as an undead controlled by Onaga until Ermac, Kenshi and Aiko emitted a long-forgotten song in her mind which was the lullaby she had as a baby! She reunited with Liu and her lost father, Jerrod, and separated again until Onaga and the Kamidogu were destroyed. Liu and Kitana took a peaceful walk thru the kingdom, but it was brief since Kitana met Blaze who assured Armageddon shall smite her enemies for good. Although...their titan selves observed everything from their Hourglass on Yin Yang Island! They watched over the ruminations of the realms, and Taven's recent quest, before Liu intervened momentarily. They too recovered Caro and gave him asylum from Daegon, although Raiden warned his champions that Armageddon was upon everyone...

The mortal Liu and Kitana headed to Edenia and made last-minute recruits with the Resistance and spent some tender moments together before they gathered in the Dragon Grotto. The titans united with Orin and Caro before the last peaceful moments. Raiden electrocuted Kitana to save her, then needed to save Liu as the 2 combined their prowess as the new Fire God to endure against Blaze! The titans watched on until Kitana was also shocked, however thanks to Aiko's last heart gem it kept the past Kitana's memories and restored the Titaness! Their past vessels were gone but the Titans live on!

They both enlisted Caro as their own since he'd nowhere else to go with Daegon and the Red Dragons out of the picture; they decided to have him guard over the Hourglass and assist them if they need to defend the realms. One day, Kitana felt very sick and needed to stay in Edenia; after Liu trained Caro, he received word from the Edenians she's actually with child! Caro highlighted everything to Aiko from Liu and Kitana emerging into 2008 from 1992, to facing Kronika and her forces, to being separated until Liu decimated the titaness and reunited with her in the dawn of time, to going with Shang's coaxes on retrieving her Krown, and finally Liu succeeding over the new Titan and meeting Kitana back on the meteorite as he weakened. Kitana expedited time to develop Edenia where he recovered without the Jinsei. They stayed within the Palace and prepared for Kahn's invasion and the first tournament, and they succeeded. They were soon engaged and married with Argus as the reverend, and both were official Titans and Gods before they fast-forwarded in time to train the Great Kung Lao, although he succumbed to his injuries and passed on after slaying Goro just 50 years after slewing Shang, thus erasing all their valiant deeds and restarting time; just letting history run itself... By the time Caro's flashbacks were over, Liu and Kitana returned and presented Aiko with their newborn son, Cheung, and anointed Caro as his guardian and for the Hourglass.
