The Cross was a holy object that was given to Dante by his lover Beatrice before he left for The Crusades. It was a powerful artifact that allowed Dante to perform Holy-based ranged attacks.
With every Damned soul that was absolved, the holy Cross grew more powerful. With three Beatrice Stones, the player gained the ability to auto-absolve the souls. The Cross could also give Dante health every time that it killed an enemy once he was given the required ability.
Background[]
Before Dante left for the Crusades, he swore upon Beatrice's cross to "Forsake all of the pleasures of the flesh" until he returned to her. Beatrice gave Dante her cross and asked him to return it to her when he came back as a reminder of his promise and token of their love. Dante carried the object with him during his time in the Crusades, but he broke his promise to Beatrice when he slept with the slave girl, and it led to Beatrice's abduction by Lucifer into Hell.
Just before Dante passed through the Gates of Hell, he charged the cross with divine light which allowed him to see in the darkness of the Inferno and absolve the various shades of the Damned (Including that of the souls of Francesco and his mother named Bella Abati and his father named Alighiero di Bellincione). When Dante confronted Beatrice in the eighth circle of Fraud, she was already the new Queen of Hell after Lucifer planted the seeds of doubt in Beatrice and he almost successfully made her forget her love for Dante. However, Dante proceeded to hand the cross back to Beatrice, reminding her of their love and his promise to return it to her. This was enough to cause the cross to absolve Beatrice's soul, forsake her role as Lucifer's wife and return to her normal self and allow the archangel named Gabriel to carry her off to Purgatory and await Dante's return when he escaped from the Inferno. After Dante defeated Lucifer and he entered Purgatory, his armor, Scythe and Holy Cross are forsaken as he came upon Purgatory. It remained to be seen what became of the Holy Cross and many of the tools that he obtained during his journey after Dante escaped from Hell.
Dante's Journal[]
- In the film, Beatrice claimed that the Cross had a thorn from Jesus' Crown of Thorns. This could be the reason why the Cross possessed powerful holy properties as it was endowed with Jesus' blood.
- In the game, the Cross seemed to be made of silver, but in the concept art, it actually appeared to be made of gold.
Sleepy Hollow, the Missing Episodes[]
It was first mentioned by Jenny that she needed to find a holy relic in order to reverse Ichabod's damnation. She hired her hunters, even Donnie Wu, to search for it, and they found it after they reached an airport; unfortunately, it was suddenly taken by one of the Onondaga hawks. It returned to the camp as the Cross was covered by a cloth; it dropped it once the bird began to attack Jeremy, and thinking it was a blunt weapon, the brainwashed Gavin wielded it. What they didn't know was the Cross was a holy relic which restored Gavin's mind. Jeremy was alarmed by it and immediately retreated! It also helped magnify Gavin's virtue as he shielded Ichabod by a thrown axe by Abraham!
Jenny confirmed it was the sacred relic she was looking for, though sadly it wasn't able to reverse Ichabod's curse... As wielder of Faith, Jenny kept it in her possession, empowering her and the team, even thru Hell! It was also used to free and ascend certain damned souls such as the suicidal Chuck Barrington, Romeo and Juliet, and even Benedict and Katrina from Treachery! Ichabod witnessed the holy site as he stopped freeing Lucifer, who was pained by it! It was strong enough to break off Ichabod's thrall as well as recovering his damned soul!
Later it was used on Jeremy as Gavin never wanted to slay Ichabod's son in front of him. Unfortunately, it wasn't strong enough to fend off the escaped Lucifer, until the deceased loved ones gave the team their prayers and support, uniting all seven Virtues! The Cross was the epicenter of them all and it was empowered enough to vanquish Lucifer into Hell again!
Finally, Jenny and Gavin were knighted as the Future Witnesses, successors of the current Witnesses, Ichabod and Lara! The Cross was the decorative handle of the blade they forged, and Jenny and Gavin stuck it up as declaration!
