Dark Link is a dark reflection of Link. He is one of the most enigmatic enemy characters in The Legend of Zelda series, usually appearing with no backstory and no dialogue, although it is implied on numerous occasions to be merely constructed of shadow magic. Dark Link is more than just a mere battle against a monster for Link, but a battle against himself, as the young hero has to face his own strength turned against him. Due to this, Dark Link is often the ultimate challenge.

Dark Link was the brutal challenge Link, Navi and Zelda II faced at the Water Temple. As Navi examined the lake with a bright room and some deserted small isles, it was a reflective surface and unusual. By the time they reached the end and noticed they were trapped, the apparition made an ambush and made a wrathful battle mimicking each of Link's moves, even while using the Megaton Hammer! Zelda II frantically drew out a few of her Pokémon including Octillery and Gyarados, each fainted, even when the former was desperate using Zap Cannons. Croconaw took the fight, always clawing, thrashing, and biting the apparition, even using Surf to wound it. After a few attempts with Din's Fire, he was finally vanquished!
The result made Croconaw evolve into Feraligatr!
