Darkrai and the Midnight Patrol: Origin Story is a fanmade crossover that features the Midnight Patrol from Midnight Patrol: Adventures in the Dream Zone (known as Potsworth and Co. in the UK) as the main protagonists and Darkrai from the Pokémon franchise as the main antagonist. It is a prequel to Darkrai and the Midnight Patrol.

Plot

(The story starts at nighttime, at which point, a little girl is being tucked into bed by her parents)

Mother: Good night, sweetheart.

Little Girl: Good night, mommy.

Father: Sweet dreams, honey.

(The mother kisses the girl good night. The parents leave her bedroom, with the mother turning the light off. The little girl lies fast asleep in bed, holding her teddy bear close to her. But soon, Darkrai appears out of the shadows, floating over the girl's bed and gazing down at her as she sleeps)

Darkrai: You will not go gentle into that good night.

(The girl dreams she is playing hopscotch on the sidewalk. But soon, her happy dream turns into a nightmare as an earthquake causes the ground to shake and crack up. The nightmare gets worse as a tornado appears and starts sucking everything up. The girl clings to a streetlamp for dear life)

Little Girl: Help!

(She can't hold on much longer. Very soon, her fingers slip, and she gets sucked into the cyclone. The little girl wakes up screaming. She rushes out of her bedroom and into her parents' room, crying)

Mother: What's wrong, sweetie?

Little Girl: (sobbing) I had a bad dream!

Father: That's horrible.

Mother: It's okay, honey. It was just a dream.

(The girl's parents comfort her. Cuts to a beautiful castle in the Dream World. On a throne, an old king with a long white beard, a blue and pink robe and a crown gazes into a crystal ball showing the poor frightened girl telling her parents about the nightmare she had)

King: Poor child...

(The King waves his hands over his crystal ball to see a young boy in bed, but instead of being asleep like he should be, he's reading a comic book. Just then, he hears something and looks around. He doesn't see anyone around and goes back to reading his comic. Then he hears something again and looks around once more. He briefly notices Darkrai in his shadow form. He gets scared, drops his comic and holds his blanket up to his chin)

Boy: Wh-who's there?

(Darkrai appears out of the shadows in front of the boy's bed. Before the boy can call his parents, Darkrai uses Dark Void to put him to sleep. The boy finds himself in a baren graveyard. Zombie shark-men crawl their way out of the ground and begin chasing him. No matter where the boy runs, more zombie shark-men appear. He continues running through the seemingly endless graveyard to no avail. The King waves his hands again, using his magic to give the boy wings to fly away from his pursuers. But using his magic to help the boy causes him to age)

King: Oh, dear... I don't think I can protect people from Darkrai's nightmares for much longer. I need someone to take my place.

(He waves his hands at his crystal ball again. It now shows Rosie, Nick, Potsworth, Carter and Keiko getting ready for bed. Carter climbs into bed first, with Potsworth sleeping at the end of Carter's bed. Keiko gets into bed next. Finally, Nick and Rosie go to sleep in their bunk bed, with Rosie sleeping on the top bunk, and Nick sleeping on the bottom bunk with his stuffed dinosaur Murphy)

King: Ah... they're perfect!

(The King casts a spell, causing Rosie, Nick, Murphy, Potsworth, Carter and Keiko to disappear. They then reappear in the King's castle, with Nick now wearing his trademark superhero outfit)

Carter: Hey, what gives? How'd we get here?

Potsworth: That's precisely what I want to know.

Carter: Whoa! Potsworth! You can talk!

Potsworth: Goodness me! I hadn't noticed.

Nick: Wow! Look at my new outfit! I look like a real superhero!

Murphy: Uh-huh.

Nick: Wow! Murphy, you're alive!

(Nick picks up Murphy and shows him to Rosie)

Nick: Look, Rosie! He's alive!

Rosie: Nicholas! (shoves Murphy out of her face) Keep that grody lizard out of my face!

King: Welcome to my castle.

(Carter, Potsworth, Keiko, Nick, Murphy and Rosie all turn their attention to the King in front of them)

Keiko: Who are you?

King: I'm the King of the Dream World. I've been watching over people's dreams for thousands of years but protecting them from nightmares has taken its toll on me. Using my magic to help people in their dreams has caused me to age so much, I can't protect them anymore.

Rosie: So, why did you bring us here?

King: I need you to protect everyone's dreams from now on.

(The friends all look surprised)

Carter: But how? We don't have magic like you.

Potsworth: Quite right. Besides, we wouldn't be able to protect everyone's dreams forever. In fact, we all have to wake up sooner or later.

King: I'm afraid you're mistaken. You can never wake up again, because your bodies no longer exist on Earth.

(The King's crystal ball floats down and shows the five friends that they have indeed vanished from existence entirely, leaving them all shocked)

King: I am sorry. I know that you must already miss your parents and your old lives in the real world, but if you stay here and promise to protect everyone's dreams, you will have a life of eternal happiness. And you're all very special. I've given each of you your own dream abilities. And I think you'll do a much better job than even I ever could.

Nick: Wow! We have our own powers?

King: Yes. So, will you accept this job?

(The gang huddles together)

Nick: What do you think?

Carter: I think it's a great idea.

Potsworth: Let's not rush into things. It's just like the King said, we can't wake up anymore, so fighting nightmares could be dangerous.

Keiko: Don't worry, Potsworth, we'll be fine if we all work together.

Rosie: What about our parents?

Keiko: I'm sure we can visit them in their dreams.

Rosie: I hope so.

(The gang faces the King again)

Keiko: We'll do it, Your Majesty.

King: Oh, thank you. I just knew you would. Hence forth, I hereby dub you the Midnight Patrol. This is your dream, now. May you all be forever happy.

(The King lifts his hands. He closes his eyes, and magic sparkles come out of his palms that transform his castle. He disappears as he transforms his castle. In its place, there are now three different-colored sparkling and shining buildings. One is blue, one is pink, and one is purple. They all stand close together, floating in the clouds under the night sky. The buildings bear a resemblance to the ones in Emerald City from the 1939 film, The Wizard of Oz. There are blue brick roads that are surrounded by clouds and lined with stylish blue lamp posts with star-shaped lights. There is a park that stands in the very center of this area with a fountain decorated with a crescent moon on top. The park also includes a bench, a tree, some flowers, a pink and blue merry-go-round with a golden star in the middle, a slide with a blue ladder decorated with yellow stars while the sliding part is pink, a blue swing post that's decorated with yellow stars and has four pink swings, and a sandbox)

Keiko: Wow.

Nick: This is great! Let's see what kind of powers we have!

(Carter discovers he has a paint set with him)

Carter: (getting an idea) Hmm...

(Using his paintbrush, Carter draws a statue of Potsworth into being)

Carter: This is too cool!

Potsworth: Indeed. It's quite a likeness.

(Nick flies through the air)

Nick: I can fly! This is fun! I'm a real superhero now! (He flies down and grabs Rosie's arms) Come fly with me, Rosie! (He flies into the air again)

Rosie: Ahh! Nicholas, you put me down right now!

Nick: Gee, Rosie, I just wanted you to fly with me.

Rosie: PUT ME DOWN!!!!!

(Scared from her yelling, Nick accidentally drops Rosie. She screams as she falls. Carter quickly saves her by drawing a big bed for her to land on. The bed breaks her fall. Nick flies down to see if she's okay)

Rosie: (to Nick) Next time, don't drop me.

Nick: Sorry, Rosie. Still, it's really great to be a superhero now. From now on, you guys can call me Super Nick.

Carter: No problem, Super Nick.

(Keiko soars above on a flying skateboard. Her friends are amazed at this. She flies at high speed and in different patterns. She then comes down and lands beside the others)

Nick: Wow, Keiko, you can fly too.

Keiko: Yup. I always loved skateboarding, but using a skateboard that flies is even better.

Rosie: How come I don't have any powers like you guys?

Potsworth: A good question.

Keiko: Don't worry, Rosie. I'm sure there are plenty of ways you can help us.

(The Midnight Patrol heads into the blue building. The walls are blue and decorated with stars and a crescent moon. The team now stands at a big computer with numerous buttons, some of which look like stars and crescent moons. It also has what appears to be a globe of the Earth in it)

Nick: Wow. Cool computer.

(Carter presses a few buttons. The computer screen shows people's happy dreams)

Carter: This is cool. We can see everyone's dreams on here.

Potsworth: You certainly seem on top of things, Carter.

(Carter presses another button, and the screen displays a small town at night)

Keiko: Wow! We can even see what's happening on Earth.

(The Midnight Patrol suddenly sees Darkrai in shadow form leaving the town for a second)

Carter: Woah! Did you see that?

Nick: Yeah!

Rosie: What was it?

Potsworth: Well, don't ask me.

Keiko: I'm sure it was nothing.

Carter: I hope you're right, Keiko.

(In the real world, Darkrai, still in shadow form comes upon a cabin by a lake. He enters a young girl's bedroom. He approaches her and comes out of the darkness. At first, the girl is happy as she lays fast asleep. But with Darkrai nearby, her smile begins to fade. Her face becomes distressed, and she whimpers in her sleep as she's now having a bad dream. Back at the Midnight Patrol's home)

Rosie: How are we supposed to know when someone's having a nightmare?

(Before anyone can answer, an alarm bell shaped like a crescent moon starts ringing, getting the Midnight Patrol's attention)

Potsworth: Perhaps that's how.

(A red dot flashes on the globe of the Earth. It flashes in Canada, which means the girl having a nightmare is in Canada. Carter presses a button, and the computer displays the girl's nightmare: her cabin is on fire, and she can't get out. And to make things worse, the fire on the floor is opening a bottomless pit)

Keiko: We gotta save that girl!

(Two big doors on the left side of the room that form a yellow circle with the letter Z on it open themselves up. A trail of rainbow-colored stars appears and trails into the distance)

Keiko: This must lead to that girl's dream! Come on, gang!

(The Midnight Patrol quickly races down the trail. They pass by the happy dreams of the people of Earth which appear as big balls of light. They come up to the nightmare of the girl in the cabin. It has an ominous red glow and looks like a ball of fire. The team enters the nightmare. They are shocked at the sight of the blazing fire)

Nick: Wow! How are we gonna put out that fire?

Carter: I've got an idea!

(Carter draws a fire hydrant with a fire hose attached to it. He points the hose at the fire and sprays away. The fire on the cabin starts going out)

Nick: Way to go, Carter!

Potsworth: Very smart for a human.

(Nick flies at the door, breaking through and entering the burning cabin. His friends follow. The girl having a nightmare is standing on what little floor there is left, and it's shrinking fast. Carter draws a rope. Keiko takes it and tosses it to the girl. She grabs it right before the remaining part of the floor she's standing on disappears. She falls, but she and Keiko hold onto the rope tightly. Keiko pulls the rope, Carter pulls Keiko, Rosie pulls Carter, Nick pulls Rosie, Potsworth pulls Nick by his cape, and Murphy pulls Potsworth by his tail. After much effort, they pull the girl to safety)

Girl: Thanks.

Carter: No problem.

(Suddenly, the big hole in the ground shrinks and disappears. A swirling shadow appears in its place)

Darkrai: Who dares to interfere in my nightmare?

(Darkrai emerges from the darkness. Potsworth, Carter, Rosie, Nick, Murphy and Keiko are intimidated by his appearance)

Nick: Wh- who... who are you?

Darkrai: I am Darkrai. I bring nightmares to all who dwell in the human world.

(Rosie walks up to Darkrai to confront him)

Keiko: Rosie, no!

Darkrai: You approach me by your own will? You are either very brave, or very foolish.

Rosie: You listen to me, Darkrai. We're not scared of you, because we're the Midnight Patrol. The King of the Dream World brought us to his castle and chose us to protect people's dreams for him after he was gone. And we're not going to be scared away by any of your stupid nightmares.

Darkrai: The King made a foolish choice. Human children and a dog trapped in eternal sleep cannot defeat me or protect the dreams of humans.

Rosie: Oh, yeah?

(Rosie is about to punch Darkrai, but Darkrai vanishes into the shadows just as she throws her punch)

Rosie: Huh!?

(Darkrai reappears and grabs the girl whom the Midnight Patrol saved from her nightmare and floats up while holding her. She screams in fear)

Darkrai: The King of the Dream World was a more worthy opponent than any of you. Now, go away.

Carter: Forget it, Darkrai!

(Nick flies into the air. Keiko gets on her skateboard and joins Nick)

Keiko: Guess you forgot that anything can happen in dreams.

Nick: You said it, Keiko.

(The two friends fly at Darkrai, with Keiko grabbing the girl from his arms, and Nick delivering a hard punch, sending Darkrai flying through the cabin wall. The Midnight Patrol heads outside to confront him again. Darkrai gets back up)

Potsworth: Are you ready to admit defeat?

Darkrai: No. You are more powerful than I thought. But we will soon see how powerful you truly are.

(Darkrai vanishes)

Rosie: That was too easy.

Potsworth: Don't be too sure. I have a feeling that we'll be facing worse nightmares than this.

Carter: Potsworth's right. Who knows what other kinds of nightmares Darkrai will cook up?

Keiko: We can handle it, gang. We're the Midnight Patrol.

Nick: Yeah!

(The team returns home and decides to see what else their home has to offer. They go into the pink building. To their delight, it turns out to be a bakery)

Keiko: Wow! A bakery!

(Keiko finds a cookbook)

Keiko: Check it out. There are lots of great recipes in here. Sweet Dream Cookies, Sweet Dream Cake, Sweet Dream Cupcakes, Sweet Dream Muffins, and even Sweet Dream Dog Biscuits!

Potsworth: Sweet Dream Dog Biscuits? That does sound rather delicious.

(The team gathers together and looks at the cookbook)

Carter: Sweet Dream Cookies sound great.

Nick: I bet they taste better than any cookie on Earth.

Rosie: I'd like to try them myself.

Keiko: Then let's get baking!

(Everyone grabs a baker's hat and an apron and gathers ingredients. Nick flies up to a very high shelf to grab eggs and a bag of flour. He comes back down with them and rejoins his friends. Rosie cracks a few eggs and adds them to the bowl. Next, Carter pours in a few cups of sugar. Keiko adds a cup of flour. After a few more ingredients are added, the team mixes them together and looks at the cookbook again)

Keiko: Oops! We forgot the cookie cutters.

Nick: Don't worry, Keiko, I'll get them.

(Nick flies up to another high shelf and finds the cookie cutters. They're shaped like circles, stars, hearts and crescent moons. The friends then roll out the cookie dough and use every shape for them with the cookie cutters. The cookies are placed on a baking tray and put into the oven to bake. After a couple of minutes, the cookies are done. The gang takes them out of the oven. They all give them a good smell)

Nick: They smell really great!

(Everyone decorates the cookies with frosting, icing and sprinkles. Finally, they start eating them)

Keiko: You were right, Nick. These are the best cookies ever made!

Carter: You said it, Keiko. These cookies are a dream come true.

(After finishing the cookies up, the team puts everything away, with Nick putting the ingredients back where he and his friends found them. While flying up to one of the high shelves, he drops the bag of flour. It falls on Rosie. She's all covered in flour, and she looks really annoyed. She notices Potsworth smirking at her)

Rosie: Don't say anything, Potsworth.

Potsworth: If you insist.

(Suddenly, the alarm goes off)

Nick: Someone's having a bad dream again!

Keiko: (gasps in shock that the alarm had gone off) Not another nightmare!

Carter: Who could be having bad dreams now?

Keiko: I don't know... but we'll find out. Let's roll, Midnight Patrol!

Rosie: Wait a second! (she shakes and wipes off all the flour from her body and then sighs as she admires herself in a hand mirror) That's better.

Potsworth: Whatever the new threat is, I hope it's an easier job to handle than the one we did recently.

(The Midnight Patrol rushes to the mission room again and sees that five different people from five different places in the United States are having nightmares as shown on the globe. Viewing the screen, the team sees the victims' nightmares: a little boy is cornered by an escaped lion at the zoo, a plump boy who loves food is about to be eaten by his own dinner, a young girl is drowning, a young boy at an amusement park is running from a Godzilla-like monster, and a boy is cornered by his own action figures who have come to life and are now live-sized)

Keiko: Looks like we'll have to split up this time.

(The doors open, and the team heads off, though Potsworth stays behind for a second)

Potsworth: (sighs) Humans are always in such a hurry.

(Potsworth follows his friends and catches up with them. The team races down a trail of silver sparkles. The trail soon goes in five different directions, each leading to the different nightmares. Each Midnight Patrol member takes a different path. Carter arrives at the nightmare where the boy is cornered by the lion at the zoo. The boy is too scared to move away. Before the lion can lay a claw on him, Carter quickly draws a cage around the lion, saving the boy from his nightmare)

Boy: Wow, thanks.

Carter: No problem.

(Potsworth enters the nightmare of the boy about to be eaten by his dinner. The dinner consists of a great big roasted turkey and numerous sausages. The turkey has a mouth with sharp teeth in the middle of its body, and the sausages are its tentacles)

Potsworth: Something tells me I'm going to enjoy handling this nightmare.

(As the turkey is about to take a bite out of the boy, Potsworth bites one of the sausage tentacles and rips it right off. He eats the rest of the sausages, rendering the turkey completely helpless. The boy helps himself to the turkey. In the next nightmare, the drowning girl can't stay afloat much longer. But just as she starts sinking, Keiko flies in and grabs her hand, pulling her out of the water. She coughs, then she smiles and hugs Keiko for rescuing her. Nick flies into the nightmare with the boy running from the monster at the amusement park. The monster breathes fire at all the rides as it makes its way through the park)

Nick: This looks like a job for Super Nick!

Murphy: Uh-huh!

(Nick flies down, with Murphy holding on. The boy running from the monster trips and falls. He turns around and is terrified as he sees the monster about to step on him. But Nick flies in and delivers a hard punch in the monster's face, causing it to stumble backwards. Angry, the monster roars, breathes fire and swings its claws at Nick. Nick evades the monster's fire breath and its claws with ease. He delivers two more punches across the monster's face. Then, with an uppercut punch, the monster is defeated and falls, causing the ground to shake. Meanwhile, Rose steps into the nightmare of the boy who is cornered by his now life-sized living action figures. She tries to think of a way to fight off the toys. She then spots a baseball bat in the corner of the boy's room. She grabs it. One of the action figures picks up the boy and is about to punch him, but Rosie comes in and swings the bat at the action figures, breaking them to pieces and saving the boy. With their work done, the Midnight Patrol returns home. Upon returning, they go into the purple building. They're amazed to see that it's a playroom. There are big tube slides, a big spiral slide, a place to play basketball, a trampoline, a corner with comics and toys for Nick, an area for Carter to paint pictures, and a beauty salon for Rosie)

Keiko: This place just keeps getting better and better!

Rosie: Wow! A beauty salon!

(Rosie races right to the beauty salon and begins styling her hair, while Nick goes straight to the play area. Carter heads for the painting area and starts painting a picture. In the real world, Darkrai stands atop a flagpole)

Darkrai: The Midnight Patrol is not as weak as I thought. I must create an even more powerful nightmare to keep them from ever interfering again.

(Darkrai flies away into the night. He comes across a nice house. He changes to his shadow form and goes inside. He goes up the stairs and into a boy's bedroom. Once inside, he emerges from the shadows and floats towards the sleeping boy. In their home in the Dream World, the Midnight Patrol members are enjoying themselves in the playroom, when the alarm goes off once again)

Rosie: Oh, brother...

Potsworth: Just when I thought it was time for my doggie brunch. Oh, well...

Keiko: Those nightmares just keep on coming. You know the drill, team! It's time to roll into action again!

Nick: I'm ready for action, Keiko. I don't know about Rosie, though.

Rosie: Just when I was going to get a makeover for myself. Here we go again. (groans)

(This time, the computer shows a boy getting attacked by his dream house in the countryside that's turned into a monster like Mr. Nebbercracker's house in Monster House)

Keiko: Come on, gang!

(The heroes travel down a rainbow road. They soon approach the boy's nightmare, this time resembling a ball of black fire. As they enter the dream, they see the house monster has now grown eight spider-like legs and a pair of hairy brown monster arms with sharp claws. It snarls and growls, spewing flames from its mouth. It grabs the boy and prepares to eat him. Nick flies in and opens the monster's hand. Then, he flies away carrying the boy to safety. The rest of the team arrives to confront the monster)

Potsworth: This won't be easy.

Keiko: Relax, Potsy. We can handle this.

(The house monster snarls with rage and prepares to crush the Midnight Patrol into oblivion with its fists)

Carter: Look out!

(The gang evades the incoming fists. Nick flies at the monster and punches it, but it barely gets knocked back. Angry, the house blasts fire from its gaping mouth at the young superhero. Nick flies out of the way, barely evading it. Keiko flies in to keep it distracted. The monster grabs for her, but misses. Potsworth bites one of the monster's legs, causing it to roar in pain. It shakes Potsworth off. Carter rushes over to him)

Carter: Potsworth! You okay?

Potsworth: I'm quite alright.

(As Nick and Keiko fly around the monster, it finally catches them)

Carter: Keiko!

Rosie: Nicholas!

Potsworth: Oh dear!

(Nick and Keiko struggle, but they can't get free)

Keiko: Help!

Rosie: Let them go, you stupid monster!

(The house monster glares down at Rosie and raises one of its spider legs, preparing to step on her. Frightened, Rosie runs out of the way just as the monster brings its leg back down. The monster opens its mouth, preparing to eat Nick and Keiko, but Carter draws a stick of dynamite. The dynamite lights from the moment Carter draws the fuse on it. He tosses it into the monster's mouth, and it explodes, freeing Keiko and Nick)

Keiko: Thanks, Carter.

Nick: I thought we were goners.

(The smoke and fire from the now destroyed monster house shrinks away and turns into a shadow. Darkrai appears out of the darkness once again)

Keiko: It's Darkrai!

Darkrai: I am warning you, Midnight Patrol, if you do not stay out of my way, I will trap you all in a never-ending nightmare.

Carter: It takes more than a few nightmares to stop us, Darkrai!

Keiko: That's right. There's no nightmare we can't handle!

Darkrai: We will see.

Rosie: Enough talk, you guys! Let's teach Darkrai a lesson!

(Rosie runs in Darkrai's direction, ready to try and punch him again. But Murphy rushes forward in an attempt to stop her. As he crosses her path, Rosie trips on him, causing her to lose balance and fall into a deep nearby water hole. She comes to the surface to find her clothes and her hair all wet, and her hair ribbon missing)

Rosie: My blouse! My skirt! My ponytail! Eww! Eww! Eww! They're all wet! NICHOLAS! Your grody lizard IS A NUISANCE!

Nick: Sorry, Rosie.

Darkrai: It appears you are not such a perfect team after all.

Keiko: Nobody's perfect. Sure, Rosie is pretty fussy, but we're still friends no matter what!

(Rosie is out of the water hole, and she got her hair ribbon back. Though she's still dripping wet. She confronts Darkrai again)

Rosie: (preparing to throw another punch) I'll get you this time!

(Before Rosie can throw her punch, Darkrai sends her flying backwards using Dark Pulse)

Darkrai: Do not underestimate me. You forget, I have power over dreams.

Nick: That won't stop us!

(Nick flies straight at Darkrai to deliver him a solid punch. Darkrai shields himself just before Nick strikes. The blow sends him back a little. Darkrai uses Double Team)

Nick: Huh!?

(Murphy whimpers as the copies of Darkrai circle him and Nick. Nick panics as he looks all around at Darkrai's copies as he can't figure out which is the real Darkrai. Darkrai stops using Double Team and shocks Nick with Shock Wave while he's not looking. Nick's friends rush in to help him, but Darkrai flies into the air and blasts them with Dark Pulse. As the team gets back up, they don't see Darkrai anywhere)

Rosie: Grrr... he got away again!

Potsworth: That's not very surprising.

Keiko: Don't worry, guys. At least we saved another dream.

Carter: Yeah, but Darkrai's pretty strong. And I think he's got a point.

Keiko: Don't listen to him. We're all stronger than he says we are.

Nick: Well, I hope we get him next time.

Murphy: Uh-huh.

(Back in the real world, Carter, Nick, Rosie and Keiko's parents wake up in the morning. But when they call for them to come downstairs for breakfast, they get no response at all. Cuts to Nick and Rosie's house)

Nick and Rosie's Mother: Nick, Rosie, where are you?

Nick and Rosie's Father: How come they're not responding? It's not like them to be late for breakfast.

(Cuts to Keiko's house)

Keiko's Mother: Keiko, time to get up! Keiko? Are you still asleep? Your little sister Yuko is waiting for you to come down to have breakfast.

(Cuts to Carter and Potsworth's house)

Carter's Father: Come on, Carter, up and at 'em! You too, Potsworth! Carter? Potsworth? Something seems to be wrong with both of them. And I already have Potsworth's dog food out.

(The parents all go up to their children's bedrooms to find out what's going on. But when they enter, they're shocked to discover that they're gone. They also notice a glowing scroll on their beds. They each unroll them to see that they're a message from the King of the Dream World telling them that Carter, Potsworth, Keiko, Nick and Rosie were taken away and appointed to protect everyone's dreams in his place)

Nick and Rosie's Father: I can't believe it... our kids were taken away from us.

Nick and Rosie's Mother: This is awful.

Carter's Father: My son and his dog are gone?

Keiko's Mother: It can't be...

(The parents, deeply upset, run outside to find help, with Keiko's mother carrying Yuko with her. Nick and Rosie's father, Keiko's mother and Carter's father all carry the written messages from the King of the Dream World in their hands as they rush outside. They all cross paths in their desperation)

Nick and Rosie's Mother: Have you seen our kids?

Keiko's Mother: You lost your kids too?

Carter's Father: I can't find Carter either. Not only that, but Potsworth's gone too!

Nick and Rosie's Father: (holds out the message he and his wife read earlier) We got this strange message saying that a king of dreams took Rosie and Nick from us so they could protect people from having nightmares.

Keiko's Mother: I got that, too!

Carter's Father: And me!

Nick and Rosie's Mother: What are we going to do?

(Darkrai overhears this from nearby and moves towards the parents in shadow form. The parents are all surprised at the sentient shadow moving around them. Darkrai then comes out of the shadows, frightening the parents upon revealing himself)

Darkrai: Sleep.

(Darkrai uses Dark Void on the parents and Yuko, putting them all to sleep. Back in the Dream World, the members of the Midnight Patrol are playing volleyball, when the alarm sounds again)

Nick: Not again!

Rosie: And we were winning, too.

Carter: Every time we find something fun to do, another nightmare starts.

Potsworth: I believe it would be appropriate to wait until just the right moment, so that-

Keiko: No, Potsworth, when there are nightmares, we have to take care of them. It's our duty to stop whatever nightmares Darkrai gives everyone. We have to hurry! Let's roll, Midnight Patrol!

Rosie: (sassy) How did I know she was going to say that? (sighs disgustedly)

(The gang heads for the mission room once again. When they use the computer, they're all horrified to see their parents and Keiko's younger sister trapped in one of Darkrai's nightmares. They're all imprisoned in a cage with spikes pointing at them)

Keiko: Oh, no! Darkrai's got our parents and my sister!

Rosie: Darkrai won't get away with this!

Potsworth: I hate to burst everyone's bubble, but I have a feeling that this nightmare could be a trap.

Carter: I think you're right, Potsworth.

Keiko: Maybe it is, but we can't just leave them there! We have to go help them! Besides, we did say we'd visit them in their dreams. Come on, gang!

(The doors open, and a trail of gold-colored sparkles appears. The Midnight Patrol follows it, with Potsworth staying behind briefly again)

Potsworth: (sighs) Oh, why do I even bother?

(Potsworth follows his friends down the trail, catching up to them. After passing by a couple happy dreams untouched by Darkrai, they come up to the nightmare in which their families are trapped. It resembles a giant eyeball made of blood-red flames. Although terrified of its horrific appearance and what may lurk inside, the Midnight Patrol proceeds into the nightmare. Once inside, they quickly find the parents and Yuko inside the cage)

Nick: Mom! Dad!

Nick and Rosie's Father: Nick!? Is that you!?

(The members of the Midnight Patrol all rush forward to the cage)

Keiko's Mother: Keiko! I'm so happy to see you! At least I would be if I weren't dreaming.

Carter's Father: Potsworth! Carter! What's going on!?

Carter: No time to explain, dad!

Keiko: Don't worry. We'll have you out of here in no time.

Darkrai's Voice: I've been waiting for you, Midnight Patrol.

(Everyone gasps. Five Darkrai appear out of nowhere, surrounding the Midnight Patrol and their parents)

Darkrai: Welcome to your worst nightmare. You came for your mothers, fathers and sister, just as I knew you would.

Potsworth: I just knew coming here was a bad idea.

(Darkrai's face appears in the center of a mass of dark swirling clouds in the sky)

Darkrai: I warned you never to interfere with my nightmares. Now, your worst fears will come to life. And you will never see your families again!

(After a flash of lightning, each of the members of the Midnight Patrol are sent to different places in Darkrai's nightmare. Carter is on stage in front of a crowd of people watching him paint a picture. The picture is incomplete, and the crowd boos and throws tomatoes at Carter. Then, all the people merge into a horrible monster whose fingers and toes consist of people's upper bodies. As the monster reaches for Carter, he runs away. He runs down a dark and seemingly endless hallway with the monster still behind him)

Darkrai's Voice: There is no escape.

(After running for some time, Carter falls down a trapdoor and into a cave full of deep water and stalagmites. He lands in the water with a splash. He then notices something coming his way. It's a group of hungry crocodiles. Frightened, he tries to swim away, but there's no way out of the cave. So, he climbs up one of the stalagmites and out of the crocodiles' reach. But the stalagmite is slippery and not easy for Carter to hang on to. He desperately tries his best to hold on as the crocodiles approach. Cuts to Potsworth's nightmare. He's all alone in what looks like a prison at first. There's an empty dog bowl in front of him and cobwebs on the ceiling. As he looks in the nearby cells, he sees the skeletons of other dogs and is overcome with dread as he now knows that he's in a cruel dog pound)

Potsworth: Oh, dear... this is no place for a dog like me!

(Cuts to Keiko, who is now all alone in an empty field with dead grass everywhere and dark grey clouds in the sky. As she wanders through this depressing place, she feels a bit scared and lonely)

Keiko: Nick? Carter? Rosie? Potsworth? Where are you guys?

(She soon sees something up ahead but can't quite make out what it is. She gets closer to get a better look. Lightning in the sky flashes, shining light on the objects before Keiko, revealing them to be tombstones with her friends' names on them)

Keiko: (horrified) No... No! It's not true! My friends are alive! I'm positive!

(The ground suddenly begins to quake. Keiko turns around to see a bigger tombstone rise out of the ground with her name on it. She gasps as she reads it. Then, the ground beneath her feet crumbles away and she falls down a bottomless pit, screaming all the way. Cuts to Nick. He and Murphy are now on the playground at his old school. The clouds in the sky are dark. Nick is confronted by a gang of school bullies. They grow bigger and become very ugly. As they try to gang up on Nick, he flies into the air, away from them, with Murphy riding on his head)

Nick: Phew...It's a good thing I can FLYYYYYY!!!!!!!!

(Having lost his ability to fly, Nick falls towards the playground below. He grabs onto a basketball hoop. The ground below cracks and crumbles away to reveal a pit of lava with giant black snakes snapping their mouths as they wait for Nick to come down. Frightened, Nick holds onto the basketball hoop for dear life, with Murphy clinging to him)

Nick: Hang on, Murph!

(Murphy whimpers. Cuts to Rosie in a filthy bathroom that looks like it hasn't been cleaned in weeks, maybe even longer)

Rosie: Eww! This place is gross-out city!

(Just then, cockroaches crawl out of the sink, rats come out of the toilet, and spiders crawl down from the ceiling. They all make their way to Rosie as they come out. Frightened, she runs to the door, but it's locked. She desperately tries to get it open as the rats, cockroaches and spiders come closer. Finally, the door opens and Rosie races out of the bathroom, only to be greeted by gigantic bugs that immediately start attacking her. She narrowly evades a giant praying mantis and runs from a giant beetle. She then runs into a giant ant and runs the other way before it can catch her in its mandibles)

Rosie: (still running) I don't want to protect people's dreams anymore! I want to wake up!

(Suddenly, something grabs Rosie by the back of her blouse and lifts her up. She's brought up to the face of a giant person. The person's face is distorted and covered in warts and pimples, and he has snot dripping from his nose. He licks his lips, holds Rosie over him and opens his mouth, ready to eat her)

Rosie: (frightened) No! No! Don't eat me!

(The ugly giant lets her go, and she screams as she falls into his mouth and down his throat. Rosie lands in a dark place with no one else around. Suddenly, bugs start crawling out of her hair)

Rosie: Eww!

(As Rosie tries to get the bugs out, more and more keep coming out. Soon, bugs start coming out of her dress too. As she tries to get all the bugs out in vain, more start falling down on her. She's now trapped in a giant hourglass full of bugs held by a giant Darkrai who watches as Rosie slowly gets buried in the disgusting bugs falling down on her. Cuts back to Carter still holding onto the stalagmite while the crocodiles snap at him hungrily)

Carter: I gotta get out of here!

(Carter thinks for a moment, then gets an idea he should have tried earlier. He takes out his paintbrush and draws a door floating in midair. He quickly opens in and escapes the cave. Back to Potsworth still in the pound)

Potsworth: (depressed) Oh, I do wish I were playing in the park or going for a walk with Carter right now. How am I ever going to get out of here? I know that if Keiko were here, she'd tell me to never give up. (Thinks for a little) She's right, I mustn't give up. There has to be a way out of this awful pound.

(Potsworth pulls at the door to his cell, but it won't budge. He desperately looks around for a way out. Then he gathers up his courage and tries to dig his way out. To his surprise, it actually works. Sure enough, he digs a tunnel and escapes from the pound. Meanwhile, Keiko is still falling down the bottomless pit. She soon stops screaming and shuts her eyes tightly, trying to regain her positivity)

Keiko: This isn't real... I just know it... My friends are alive...

(After much positive thinking, Keiko's flying skateboard appears, and she rides it out of the pit. Back with Nick, he's not able to hold on to the basketball hoop much longer)

Nick: I'm slipping!

(Murphy panics. In no time, Nick loses his grip. Then he and Murphy fall towards the giant snakes in the lava pit below. At first, Nick thinks that he and Murphy are doomed. But then, he tries to see if he can fly away again. Just before one of the serpents can swallow him, Nick flies into the air, with Murphy clinging to his cape)

Nick: Cool! I can fly again! Hang on, Murph! We gotta find our friends!

(Nick flies off. He flies to a barren landscape, regrouping with Keiko who arrives at the same time)

Nick: Keiko, it's you!

Keiko: Sure, it's me, Nick!

(A door magically appears. It opens, and Carter comes out of it)

Keiko: Carter!

Nick: It's great to see you again!

Carter: It's great to see you too, Super Nick!

Potsworth: Did any of you miss me?

(Carter turns around to see Potsworth right behind him who just dug out of the ground)

Carter: Potsworth! I'm glad you're alright.

Potsworth: I'm happy to see you again, as well.

Keiko: Where's Rosie?

Nick: I don't know.

Carter: Uh-oh. Don't look now, but we've got company.

(The giant Darkrai rises into view, still holding the hourglass of bugs with Rosie still trapped inside)

Rosie: Help me! Get me out of here!

Nick: Rosie!

(Nick flies up to confront Darkrai)

Nick: You let my sister go, you monster!

Darkrai: Fool. No one commands me in their dreams.

Rosie: Nicholas!

(Rosie is almost completely buried under the bugs)

Nick: Don't worry, Rosie! I'll save you!

(Nick flies even higher and circles back down, knocking the hourglass out of Darkrai's claw. He flies down and catches it before it hits the ground. He brings it over to his friends, sets it down and punches it, breaking it open and setting Rosie free)

Rosie: (getting the bugs off her) Eww! Eww! Eww! (after getting them off) That was disgusting. Thanks, Nicholas.

Nick: No problem, Rosie.

Darkrai: You are stronger than I expected. You may have overcome your nightmares, but you are still no match for me. I cannot be erased.

(Darkrai raises his arms, causing a great shadow to spread across the landscape. The shadow turns into an army of normal-sized clones of Darkrai)

Darkrai and his Clones: Now, you will know the true meaning of fear.

Keiko: This is it, gang! It's time to show him what we're really made of!

(Carter draws an ax and swings it at Darkrai's clones. They each vanish upon being struck. Nick flies at the Darkrai clones, giving each one a punch. They, too, disappear once defeated. Keiko rides her skateboard, hitting as many Darkrai clones as possible, taking them out as well)

Darkrai: You will not win!

(The giant Darkrai shoots a swarm of bats from the palm of his right claw at the Midnight Patrol. The bats swarm them. As the Midnight Patrol members shield themselves, Darkrai's clones surround them)

Nick: (holds his hand out) Rosie, take my hand!

(As Rosie takes her brother's hand, Nick swings her around, and she kicks at the Darkrai clones, defeating them. Potsworth bites the tail of another Darkrai clone and tosses it at another, defeating them both. Three more Darkrai clones are about to use Dark Pulse, but Nick takes them out with ease. Carter defeats a couple more Darkrai clones with his ax. Very soon, there are no more Darkrai clones left to dispatch. The Midnight Patrol now faces off against the giant Darkrai. Darkrai blasts at them with his Shock Wave attack. The electric attack is bigger and stronger due to Darkrai's size in the nightmare he created. The Midnight Patrol members evade the attack as they struggle to find a way to Darkrai. Keiko flies up and evades the electric blasts, catching Darkrai's attention. As Darkrai tries to grab her, Nick flies at him and gives him a hard punch)

Darkrai: Argh!

(Darkrai shrinks a little. Then, he attacks Nick with Dark Pulse. But Nick flies out of the way. On the ground, Carter draws a cannon and shoots at Darkrai)

Darkrai: Ahh!

(Darkrai shrinks more)

Keiko: It's working! We're winning, gang!

Potsworth: I've been waiting to hear those words for quite a while.

(Angry, Darkrai tries to attack the team using his claws, but the Midnight Patrol dodges him. Potsworth jumps onto Darkrai's claw and races up his arm. He then bites him on the shoulder. Darkrai cries out in pain again and shrinks some more. Keiko flies at him and hits him with her skateboard. Darkrai shrinks again. Nick grabs both of Rosie's hands and carries her through the air as he flies at Darkrai with her. He lets go of her, allowing Rosie to deliver a hard kick. Darkrai is now reverted to his original size, but he's not ready to quit yet)

Darkrai: Go away!

(Darkrai uses Dark Pulse again, but the Midnight Patrol avoids his attack again. Carter draws a club and runs towards Darkrai, swinging the club at him. Darkrai uses Double Team, evading his attack. Carter's friends run in to aid him. Rosie makes a lucky guess and pounces on the real Darkrai. The illusions of Darkrai vanish. Darkrai disappears into the shadows and darts away from Rosie. He remerges and uses Shock Wave again. He hits Rosie, Nick, Keiko and Potsworth, but Carter evades and runs right at Darkrai, swinging his club at him. Nick and Keiko both fly at Darkrai and deliver one final blow, knocking him down. Finally, Darkrai yields)

Darkrai: I underestimated you. You truly are worthy opponents, and you have earned my respect. But heed my words, as long as I exist, humans will always have nightmares. And I will never be a memory. We will meet again, Midnight Patrol. Farewell.

(Darkrai disappears into the shadows. After doing so, the cage in which the Midnight Patrol members' families are trapped floats down from the sky. As it touches the ground, it disappears into thin air, setting its prisoners free. The nightmare changes into a happy dream consisting of a landscape of clouds and a starry night sky with a crescent moon. The members of the Midnight Patrol happily run to their parents, hugging and kissing them. Keiko also gives her younger sister lots of love as well)

Keiko's Mother: Thank you so much for saving us from that horrible nightmare, Keiko! You and your friends are so brave.

Keiko: Of course, we are, mom. We're the Midnight Patrol.

Carter's Father: Is it true, Carter? Are you, Potsworth and all your friends really in our dreams now?

Carter: Sure, dad. We were going to come visit you in your dreams and tell you all about it, but we were kind of busy with fighting nightmares.

Potsworth: And trust me, it's a lot of work.

Carter's Father: Potsworth! You can talk!?

Potsworth: Why, of course. After all, anything can happen in dreams.

Nick: And I'm a superhero, now! You can call me, "Super Nick."

Nick and Rosie's Father: That's great, Nick. Uh, I mean Super Nick.

Keiko: I'm sorry if you were worried about us.

Keiko's Mother: It's okay, Keiko. We understand now.

Nick and Rosie's Mother: We all found notes from the King of the Dream World on your beds.

Rosie: You did?

Nick and Rosie's Mother: That's right, Rosie. And we were worried about you at first. But now that you saved us from that nightmare, we think it's for the best that you stay in the Dream World. Who else is going to protect everyone's dreams?

Keiko: I still wish we would've visited you a lot sooner instead of having to save you from Darkrai.

Keiko's Mother: It's okay, Keiko. The only thing that matters is that you saved us.

Carter's Father: And we're all glad you get to share a happy dream forever.

Nick and Rosie's Father: You kids have sweet dreams. And be sure to visit us if you're not too busy.

Nick: Sure, dad.

Nick and Rosie's Mother: And Rosie...

Rosie: Yeah, mom?

Nick and Rosie's Mother: Do you promise to be nice to your little brother from now on?

Rosie: Sure, mom. I promise. And you can bank on it.

(Rosie puts her arm around Nick to show it like she means it)

Nick and Rosie's Mother: That's good, Rosie.

Carter: We're really going to miss living with you.

Carter's Father: And we're going to miss having you with us.

(Carter gives his dad one more hug with Potsworth joining in, Nick and Rosie hug their parents one more time, and Keiko gives her mother and sister one more hug. A few seconds later, the dream ends, and the Midnight Patrol members' parents awaken, along with Keiko's younger sister. They all smile, knowing their children and Potsworth all have a fun and wonderful new life and that they'll see them in their dreams again in the future. Meanwhile, in the Dream World, the Midnight Patrol follows the trail of golden sparkles back home. They return to the mission room, with the doors closing behind them. They look at the computer and see their families in the real world are much happier now. They can even tell that they're thinking about them)

Keiko: We're too cool for words. We did a great job. Right, gang?

Carter: You said it, Keiko.

Rosie: I was so scared of all the bugs from that nightmare, I wanted to wake up. But it doesn't matter anymore. I love our new job. And I never want to stop no matter what.

Potsworth: You're not the only one. I find it quite enjoyable as well, especially since I'm able to talk while we're here.

Carter: I'm glad to hear it, Potsworth.

Nick: Come on, gang! The last one to the playroom's a rotten egg!

(The team races out of the mission room and around the park to the playroom. Upon entering, Nick pauses as he notices something)

Nick: Hey, I never saw that staircase there. I wonder where it goes.

(Nick's friends notice it, too)

Keiko: Let's find out.

(The team now heads up the staircase to an upper floor. The only things they find there are three beds which look exactly like the ones they used to sleep in when they still lived on Earth)

Rosie: Huh? It's just a bedroom.

Potsworth: The young lady's quite observant.

Carter: Hey, look! There's something glowing on that window over there!

(The team sees a glowing scroll sitting on the window. They go over and unroll it)

Keiko: It's a message.

(The Midnight Patrol members read it)

Message: Dear Midnight Patrol, as I leave you to watch over the dreams of the people of Earth, I offer you my best wishes and best of luck. And in addition to this wonderful dream you will all be sharing with each other forever, I also left for you something extra-special that will make it worthwhile: as you look out the window of this bedroom, occasionally, you will see a star that will shine brighter than any other you see. This star will grant almost any wish you make. Whenever you see it, simply make your wish, then climb into your beds and close your eyes to see it come true. Of course, it can never grant the wish for you to return to your families on Earth, nor can it grant any wishes to stop people from ever having nightmares again. Regardless, feel free to make a wish whenever you like. Plesant dreams! The King of the Dream World!

Nick: That sounds like fun!

Carter: Yeah, let's give it a try!

(The team looks out the window. In no time, they find the brightest star shining outside)

Rosie: That must be it!

(Everyone closes their eyes and quietly makes their wish. In the real world, Darkrai stands on top of the Eiffel Tower, gazing at the city of Paris below. His legs then disappear as he floats off the tower and flies off into the night)
