Kung Lao (空佬) is a character in the Mortal Kombat series and made his debut in Mortal Kombat II.

Kung Lao is a former Shaolin monk and a member of the White Lotus Society. He stands in the shadow of his great ancestor, the Great Kung Lao, but unlike his great ancestor, he has no desire to be champion and would rather live a life of peace. However, this was retconned in MK 2011, wherein Lao is now eager to prove himself equal to Liu Kang. He is also shown to be highly conceited and immature, although these traits mask a deep-seated insecurity and inferiority complex vis a vis Liu Kang. Much like Liu Kang, he has trained under master Bo' Rai Cho. Of the Earthrealm warriors, Lao is the most outspoken pacifist, although he will not hesitate to severely punish those who attack him, Earthrealm, or his friends. His trademark weapon is his Razor-Rimmed Hat in which he can employ quite powerfully and effectively in combat. Many of his fatalities involve the use of his hat to some extent.

According to MK co-creator John Tobias in a 1995 interview with EGM, Kung Lao's hat was inspired by the 1964 James Bond movie Goldfinger, in which the character Oddjob throws his derby hat as a deadly chakram-like weapon. His appearance is probably inspired by the character from the 1984 movie Breakin'.

Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks, Part II[]

Kung Lao was made as the star of Ikran's fanfic for MK, while Liu Kang would have some minor roles. After Kung Lao assisted Liu Kang against Shang Tsung, Kintaro, and Shao Kahn respectively, Raiden assured he has freed his ancestors of their inability by working together to protect Earthrealm.

He headed and stayed at the Wu Shi Academy, only to pay his respects, and reunite with his long, lost nephew, Kung Jin! The boy was thrilled to see him again, and he was still confident he'd make it back in one piece after a few weeks. Jin always believed Lao's capable of carrying on their ancestors' legacy and being one of the best Shaolin Monks and protectors of Earth.

He then overheard a distraught monk and he stated to him that he and Liu Kang are cursed to live for eternity by the Elder Gods after winning the two tournaments. He stated the Great Kung Lao also suffered the same fate and watched each of his friends and family suffer from illness and advanced age where he remained young! Lao didn't want to believe it, but the curse bestowed by the Elder Gods was irreversible.

Heartbroken, he just sulked at one of the balconies while the celebration continued. He asked Raiden, and the Thunder God confirmed this. He offered to discuss it, but the doomed monk left the Academy. It was revealed he was in such a depressed stupor, that he didn't notice he was put under a comatose state for a few months. Eventually, he woke up in the streets and refused to get mingled with drunkards. He then spotted a damsel in distress and came to her aid from a ruthless predator! He escorted the woman to safety, introducing herself as Aiko Krackle. She mentioned she was clueless winding up at a different time, while Lao noticed he was in New Jersey rather than in China; he was hardly out of his comfort zone. And he wondered if Raiden was responsible for teleporting him. After finding a safe haven, he and Aiko settled for the night.

By the next day, he offered her some green tea and had a heartfelt discussion. He assured her that the Shaolin are a peaceful people compared to those outside of the Academy, as Aiko became paranoid on the Chinese being militaristic. He also stated that the Shaolin uphold the Order of Light, even resisting their biological urges, as fornication was forbidden, and live a life of celibacy and peace. They must stay on the alert for any outside threats both foreign and domestic. He once offered Aiko to come with him so he can teach her his ways, but he backpedaled as she was reluctant. Then, his mentor caught up with them.

Raiden realized Aiko, at least her younger self who functioned as the heart of the warriors, resolving internal conflicts between them. He was surprised Aiko grew up so fast, and it was the main reason why he brought Lao to the Jersey streets. He then offered to awaken Aiko's lost powers, based in her heart and mind. She even told Kung Lao she met him when she was six, thus recognizing him after he saved her the night before, while also mentioning he looked like a cowboy which seemed awkward to him. Raiden then escorted the pair to where his allies were.

Kung Lao took the fight to the stragglers from Outworld involving Komodai and the Saurians, though he mistakenly called him as Reptile, whom he killed at his lair in the Living Forest. He took him out seamlessly and prevented the Saurian army from escaping with his fatal Tornado! He reunited with Liu Kang, Sonya, Kitana, Jax, even Sub-Zero and met Stryker. Raiden offered them to return to their hidden base, and Lao took a Dragon Jet with Liu Kang and Kitana.

He was inside an opaque chamber within the Kombatants' hidden cave, the base the team had been using over the past trimester. He was sitting with Nightwolf and Kiba as Aiko slipped under during his first meditation session; she was incoherent, though Lao was the sober one attaining her slurs on what she was seeing, feeling, and hearing. By the time the episode was over, Aiko stated it was the last time her younger self saw the Kombatants, over 16 years ago in her time. She witnessed the so-called final battle as Shao Kahn was about to lose his throne to Kitana, however, there was a lethal scrimmage that broke out between the Shokan and Centaurs; according to Aiko, she was at base when all this happened, and Nightwolf said she was experiencing that event from a different perspective. Kung Lao came to the conclusion that Kahn's close to regaining his lost strength and invade Earthrealm! He was anxious to stop him since Lao's victory was in vain. Raiden, for once, went lenient and offered the team a little R&R since there was little activity in Outworld since the war.

Kung Lao then decided to take Aiko to the Wu Shi Academy, though he was flattered that Liu Kang was offered by Kitana to scout Outworld, stating Liu's gonna be with his girlfriend, to which the princess added they had a true bond as she sneered at Lao remembering him killing Jade.

He was then reunited with his fellow monks, as well as his nephew, Kung Jin. He shown Aiko the rounds, and she was surprised they were able to learn fluent English. Lao stated they learned it due to Great Britain owning Hong Kong, much to her shock! He then offered for her to stay with Jin while he settled business with the elders of Light. Liu's grandpa was glad to see him, and even he had his doubts Earthrealm would be safe for long. He noticed Lao's angsts of his eternal curse, though he mustn't worry, nor let the pressures of defending Earth, Jin, Aiko, his teammates nor his shaking faith in Raiden take the best of him.

Lao then beheld the massive portal open over Earth and the sky suddenly turned red, while Raiden was losing his strength. He took on a few of the Centaurs as they ransacked the Academy, while most of the monks headed to the Dragon Grotto. Lao strategized using his teleport and drop kicks onto their upper bodies and spines, and he was very nimble avoiding their charges, similar to subduing wild horses. Lao and Raiden were successful, though the god was still losing strength. He met up with Jin and Aiko, and Raiden suggested him and the novice to head to Nightwolf's sacred land. They were waiting for the arrival of the other Kombatants.

The trio arrived at the East Coast and Raiden suggested to seek out the reservation straight ahead. However, he warned him that Aiko is fragile and handicapped. He questioned how and why she would be of any use. Raiden stated her heart and mind must be guarded, and he relied on Kung Lao to do so, like the anchor to her buoy; especially since growing up she's susceptible to Indian customs. He led her to the village which was protected and intact thanks to Nightwolf's shaman skills. He greeted the duo and the Matoka needed to have them prepared by discovering their own spiritual animals, in other words, their Animalities. Both Lao and Aiko became drowsy from Gray Cloud's intense incents, and Lao found himself in the middle of a scrimmage between some shades and his friends aging rapidly and being powerless. Lao was able to create a distraction, but the shadows fled. The determined monk gave chase, and every time they fled faster, he ran and gained on them! To the point on running on all fours and leapt toward his prey!

Kung Lao hit his head on the ground floor, stunning him and causing him to stir. Nightwolf came to the conclusion he was able to use his cheetah Animality! They then watched over Aiko and noticed she changed into an Ankylosaurus, until she came to. Nightwolf said they can only use their new honed skills when the time is right. Aiko was stunned he was able to turn into a cheetah since they weren't Chinese natives. The trio soon emerged from the shaman's teepee, with Kung Lao wearing a new, flimsier outfit! Nightwolf suggested to head north and follow the immense evil he sensed, and travel discreetly to Kahn's lair.

He, Aiko and Nightwolf made a small, temporary camp. They wanted to test Aiko's heart abilities more till they've heard a sudden rumble of thunder. He and the Matokan claimed it to be Raiden, contrary to Aiko's astraphobia. The Indian urged them to follow the darkness, till they spotted some distant ice slabs, belonging to a certain elemental ninja. Kung Lao was the first to confront his pursuing enemy, Oniro, who was about to finish off Kuai and Smoke, the pair of Lin Kuei fugitives. In his cheetah Animality, following Aiko's idea, he was at an even keel till the transformation wore off. He was vulnerable in the skin, even enough to be knocked off the precipice... And he managed to make a sneak attack behind the Grandmaster's neck via his teleportation!! He then conjured a Tornado, never allowing Oniro to escape in his hawk form! Aiko stunned him thanks to her lethal cardiokinesis, killing off the master! The trio reunited with Sub-Zero and Smoke, and the Cyber transported them to the New York streets.

The quintet watched the lethal battle with Kabal and Stryker losing to Sektor. He stayed while Smoke offered his aid and Sub-Zero was desperate to make sure he wouldn't perish. He and Nightwolf lend their moral support to Aiko, as the anchors to her buoy, amongst the chaos. Thru their comfort, they increased her cardiokinesis stunning the assassin, allowing Sub-Zero to freeze him, and Smoke teleporting him away before he self-destructed! The trio regathered with the Lin Kuei escapees with Kabal and Stryker, before they had a surprise invasion led by Tarkatans and Shadow Priests! Lao was a match against the ground forces; however, he was struck down as bolts from the shades aimed to the metal rim on his hat!! The warriors were stunned once they electrocuted and abducted Smoke! He, Stryker and Sub-Zero led the salvage mission to Kahn's Fortress.

Sub-Zero was still anxious on finding the rogue cyborg, though Stryker assured they'll find him and made sure he stayed alive. Kung Lao didn't mind the altercation; all he saw was Aiko, with her face glowing by Nightwolf's makeshift campfire and sat down beside her. He offered to see what the fragile Kombatant had seen, the same dystopian future in which he and several others had been zombified. She also said Raiden was unsuccessful on saving them, even his nephew, Sonya, Johnny and herself. Lao was surprised there were only 5 survivors, and he became anxious on seeing and feeling her angsts, as he coaxed, he has more endurance than her. Nightwolf made the offer but warned it'd be a dangerous procedure; he still pushed forward, and visions of himself dying in various ways haunted the duo! Even the two sorcerers he never encountered before who led those devastating invasions!

He and Aiko broke off, with the latter more distraught. All he did was watch her anxieties go thru the roof, even though Nightwolf urged her to focus on the here and now. She was just unable to, and all Kung Lao had done was just look into her eyes and felt her. Thru his warmth and comfort, not to mention she hadn't been held by someone in eons, Lao's embrace was what soothed her, despite sharing her own heart and the conduit between them. They became spent from the experience, and their love lulled them to sleep...

Hours later, they woke up by Nightwolf, and Stryker declared company was coming thru the darkened ends of the tunnels, which turned out to be Liu Kang, Jax, Sonya and Kitana! Lao was humbled to see his Shaolin partner again and they caught up. The monks discussed that Raiden was hospitalized inside the Sky Temple, and the Jinsei was beginning to wilt. There isn't much time to stop Shao Kahn and the permanent merger, as it'd render both him and the two realms powerless. Both Lao and Liu led the charge to Shao Kahn's lair!

Shao Kahn sent out more of his extermination squads consisting of the usual Tarkatans, Shadow Priests and Centaurs. The enemies were suddenly ambushed by each of the heroes' own Animalities, even Aiko's new Ankylosaur and Kung Lao's cheetah assisting her! Over half of the invaders were assassinated by them, until they gave away from enduring too much damage reducing them to their human vessels. By the time Aiko changed back, Kung Lao actually subconsciously forced himself to morph back to protect her. Each one of the heroes continued to break thru the defense lines, and Kitana was the first to do so. Liu Kang followed her to Kahn's Fortress, as did Kung Lao, Aiko and Nightwolf albeit several feet away.

Sindel let out a deafening shriek which stunned all the advancing Kombatants! Kung Lao immediately covered over Aiko as she was barely able to use her cardiokinesis, expanding Sindel's heart just enough to exhaust her and seize her banshee screams! She restored both of her anchors, but they recommended her to stay within the covers of the dark alleyways. Nightwolf and Kung Lao rushed into the bowels of Kahn's Fortress and the monk was the first to see Smoke chained against the rear wall over a pillar peeking thru the lava! He teleported over the gap, but his hat left him shocked; Nightwolf theorized they must conquer over Kahn if they can save him. They soon arrived in the Temple and for once Kung Lao wasn't fazed of Liu's and Kitana's relationship. The Matokan sensed the immense darkness ahead, and Liu offered to stay with the women counting an unconscious Sindel for a while.

Kung Lao and Nightwolf arrived in the Soul Chamber and were flabbergasted of the monstrous display encasing all the unfortunate souls, even Johnny's and their ancestors'. All of a sudden, Sheeva made an ambush from the opaque ceiling and challenged the heroes! The shaman offered to fight off the Shokan, while Lao'd advance up to the Balcony. At first, he wanted to assist him, but he watched from the sidelines. Thanks to his soul manipulation and remembering Lao's strategy on keeping his distance, he was able to win over Sheeva, even enduring her lethal Shokan Jumps!! Kung Lao was relieved, and he headed up to the Balcony. At first the place was silent and empty, until his sharp senses detected Motaro's advances!! He recognized the Centaur was more broader and stronger than the ones he defeated while the Wu Shi Academy was invaded! He noticed it was the same murderer that killed Johnny Cage!! He immediately took him on, and because of the limited space and Motaro's body covering up most of the arena, Lao was put into a disadvantage. Even when he started mimicking his teleports, the beast's brutality was nearly too much!! Lao was desperate to end the fight in his favor as he used his sharp hat, but...

Motaro was able to deflect it from his lower chest straight back into the receiver!!! Lao was completely immobilized as he was bleeding profusely and was thrown against a sharp end of a statue with his back!! He was at the monster's mercy, until Jax intervened with a quake! Lao disappeared within a flash. Raiden barely managed to teleport Lao to the Jinsei Chamber, though they were unable to recuperate him... Aiko was devastated as she witnessed her lover's death, even after confessing her feelings for him...

Visions of Kung Lao, along with Chan and other fallen warriors, had entered into Liu Kang's mind, making him power up and unleash his pent-up energy onto Shao Kahn, causing him to fall off the narrow bridge of the Pit 3 and into the spinning blades obliterating his body and soul!! The world was able to recover itself and the skies cleared, while Raiden, Aiko and Asgaarth watched from the summit of the Sky Temple! The Jinsei was restored, as was Raiden's powers. Aiko immediately came to Lao's side as he began to breathe, and she greeted him with a kiss on his forehead. Lao's vision cleared, relieved to see her and to have his curse reversed; however, he was still dreading over Liu Kang's curse since he won thrice... He assured he can deal with it being ageless as he was still mortal; this made Aiko and Lao dumbfounded. Raiden assured he'll discuss the matter with the Elder Gods, and they'd be easier to negotiate with on account of Earthrealm thriving in strength and proving to the Elder Gods it's capable of defending from other realms. Lao offered to stay in the Jinsei and rest more, relieving his fatigue and aching body. Raiden reminded him that his nephew's worried for him, and he mustn't linger on his doubts on not having the peace last for long. Lao was pessimistic of Aiko's future, as well as the two sorcerers that were strangers to them... He eventually rested and accepted Aiko staying with him. They made a passionate kiss before they slumbered....

Hours later, he and Aiko looked out at the glorious sunset, and Raiden offered to teleport them home to the Wu Shi Academy. There, it was actually quiet once the monks emerged from the hatch of the Dragon Grotto, and Jin was ecstatic to see them both safe and sound! Lao gave his nephew a tight, warm embrace saying he was so glad to see him! He didn't mind taking up Liu Kang's absence as he was often busy watching over and Edenia's restoration. He still reformed the White Lotus Society and remained as a close friend to Aiko, training her cardiokinesis, educating her on the monks' culture and having her as a new member of the organization.

Despite the perpetual peace in both realms, he still felt uneasy that something was brewing at the heart of Earthrealm...

A Date and a Destiny[]

LaoDate

Kung Lao's spiffy outfit during his date with Aiko

Kung Lao and Aiko noticed Liu Kang pack in a dragon-shaped canoe, and he was startled he was leaving the Academy behind to pursue a more democratic, peaceful lifestyle, while also looking for more potential Shaolin Monks in order to give the Academy a promising future. He questioned if Raiden told him to do this, but it was by Liu's own intentions. He actually wanted to put him in charge of the Shaolin in Liu's stead. At first Lao was reluctant, but then he grew prouder, and he won't let him down! Everyone wished him a bon voyage.

Minutes later he invited Aiko to take her out for a date, and word got out to the other monks. When Aiko was taking in some air after the constant shifting around and the suffocating cosmetics, Raiden stated to her that Kung Lao's mind kept regretting his ancestor on failing to protect Jen. He assured that Aiko should make it a good date, and that everyone has a right for their own destiny; Lao shalln't be cursed to live the same fates as his ancestor did. He met Aiko with a spiffier outfit and escorted her thru the Academy grounds. They went to a nearby pagoda which turned out to be a Hibachi restaurant! He ordered a beef Hibachi while Aiko ordered a Fish, and she was fascinated with the place! After having a Myoki soup appetizer and fried ice cream, Aiko appreciated their first date, even the greeter did the same! Lao was grateful for her, and they leaned in for a passionate kiss.

Until she first noticed a distant cry coming from a random monk. Kung Lao's keen vision followed the uproar to the Warrior Shrine, and it was an elderly man who seamlessly took out several of them! He demanded to find Earthrealm's Champion, then the monks pleaded that he left. The skilled geezer then heard a tenor speak behind him, in came Kung Lao. The stranger was enthralled, and the challenger introduced himself as Kung Lao, the descendant of the Great Kung Lao; he challenged him to Mortal Kombat, and the old man accepted. Lao said he was the second best, next to Liu Kang, and took him on. After several minutes of strenuous kombat, Fujin easily won over Lao, even overpowering him with his more advanced aerokinesis! He held Kung Lao still before he was healed. The monks received minimal damage, and he went by the name of Fujin. He criticized Lao he still had much to learn, though he seemed to have the potential to meet and even surpass his ancestor. He wanted to train his aerokinesis, and if he's interested, he shall find Fujin back at the Wu Shi Arena. Little did Lao knew this was in preparation for the war involving the Elder Gods.

Shinnok's Uprising[]

KungLaoMK4attire

Kung Lao's appearance in Shinnok's Uprising

Kung Lao was still training with Fujin at the Wind World after a couple years. His prowess has improved immensely, and Aiko often decided to come along as his mediator. The monks were functioning well too even during Liu's absence. And his nephew was advancing in his education, even partaking in a karate class. Although, not everything was glorious, as he, Aiko, Nightwolf and even Fujin had been receiving night terrors of an ominous sorcerer. Fujin identified him as the fallen Elder God, Shinnok, whom he believed has risen from the Netherrealm after thousands of years. Fujin then sensed the oncoming threat within the heavens and immediately evacuated Lao and Aiko to the Wu Shi Academy via funnel!

While there, Lao and Aiko were alarmed on the whereabouts of him and Raiden! Following their cries, in came Nightwolf and Kiba! The shaman offered them to hightail in a Dragon Jet and chase after the fallen comet he spotted with his high-tech equipment; thinking it might be one of the fallen Gods, Lao didn't hesitate! They discussed about their terrors before the Makotan spotted the ambush inside the crater! The trio fought off the demons and assisted the monks, Liu and Kai! Before introductions were made, Raiden warned of the oncoming threat. They must gather all of Earthrealm's warriors in order to prevent the same catastrophe long ago!

Lao and company met up with Sonya, Sub-Zero and a resurrected Johnny Cage!! Everyone was thrilled to have the agent, cryomancer and celebrity back! Before Sonya, thanks to Nightwolf's soul manipulation, was able to create a portal leading into Edenia. He and his team accepted Quan Chi's challenge in his new Mortal Kombat tournament if they should fight thru the Army of Darkness and enter the corrupt Edenian Palace.

He followed Liu who led the team descending some steep hills toward the empty vicinity of the Palace as they were ambushed by the Army of Darkness. Lao even used his hat both as a weapon and shield. He was amazed his skills were quicker and stronger than before, courtesy of all that strenuous training by Fujin! He did recall the ominous face as he'd seen Quan Chi in his disturbing visions. Nevertheless, the group were being overwhelmed by the generals! He and Liu still recognized the Archers and Warmongers from their journey thru Outworld, even those in the Tower and Foundry! Unfortunately, in conjunction with more enemies, Liu declared for the heroes to split up, divide their formations to infiltrate the Palace on all sides!

Lao and Aiko both escaped to the Living Forest, and with a smaller squad and more space, he urged her to take cover in the nearby cave! He unleashed his fury in a lethal F0 Tornado shattering all the enemies present!! He then spotted a silhouette looming in the cavern and out popped Kitana! They were thrilled to see her, despite she was only looking for Liu, still she accepted the duo. As they settled down, Kung Lao received word of his ancestor being involved with Quan Chi, as he wanted the Champion's soul for himself. He was surprised that the Great Kung Lao was involved, and he wondered if his visions were foresights.

Hours later, the trio arose and soon they approached a small bog surrounded by the mutated trees! They were then ambushed by a lone Saurian who spat acid onto the princess' face! Aiko went to tend for her while Lao immediately took the call to action! From his past experience, he fended him off well, despite the slippery silt and the spear similar to Scorpion's! Though his hat sliced thru it and left the Saurian vulnerable! His invincibility didn't provide much cover, even when Lao concentrated on all sides, and covering with his Whirlwind Kicks. He won over him, but Kitana implored to not kill him! She forced him to identify himself as Syzoth, a Saurian general. Lao wondered if all Saurians were aggressive, but rather territorial due to their dwindling numbers and the many dangers during Outworld's corruption. He escorted the trio to the ancient Ruins of Zaterra and the Raptors were convinced they must unite to fend off Shinnok and Quan Chi.

After a while, Lao questioned Aiko on how she and Nightwolf were "resistant" against the gem of Tetsurri, Zaterra's valuable treasure. She stated there used to be support from other realms only temporarily, as there were anomalies within rips of Earth's dimensional fabric. The Koopas were one of those allies whom Aiko knew well, and when she rescued one from a thornbush, she was infected while Nightwolf was staying at base; thus, her first encounter with Quan Chi. He was surprised on how everything was always leading to both him and Shinnok, even the unfortunate extinction of the dinosaurs and evacuation of the Saurians to Zaterra from Earthrealm, caused by Raiden's first battle with the fallen Elder God! He couldn't help but feel Aiko's concern of their plights.

He, Aiko, Kitana and the Saurians went thru the swamps, a discreet route returning to the Edenian Palace, only to find Sonya being confronted by her nemesis, Jarek. He noticed her backing toward the edge and falling off, only to be caught by the heroic monk! She appreciated his help, and they witnessed the Black Dragon's demise at the hands of Jax! They met up and Sonya offered Jax to escort Cyrax into the portal leading to Earthrealm. Johnny Cage questioned his and Aiko's getup; they were wearing dark warpaint and had stray leaves to blend in with the thick vegetation, like a real soldier, Sonya complimented. She was also astonished they were able to rally up the Saurians, while she and Johnny rounded up some of the Shokan and Centaurs using Cobalt equipment which was said to negate Quan Chi's abilities.

He arrived to save Liu Kang and Jade from another unsuspecting ambush by the Army of Darkness. Aiko, Johnny and Sonya emerged from the shadows, though Lao was alarmed to recognize the green Edenian remembering the fatal fight atop the Outworld Tower! Liu broke off the quarrel, assuring that if it wasn't for Jade, he would've been killed by Tanya and her trap. He was also alarmed that Scorpion, preferably to be named Hanzo, joined the cause. The undead ninja bailed into the melee shortly after to hunt down Quan Chi! Kung Lao's only purpose was to save the prisoners as he followed Kitana and Jade thru a secret passage; the princess warned they can be rigged like Tanya's trap. But the heroes wound up at a trifecta, and Lao and Aiko were lucky enough to find the POWs! He was successful on helping them escape, even when he had to Teleport behind the rigged cells! He contacted Sonya to open a portal leading to Earthrealm, specifically the Bayan Har Mountains near the Wu Shi Academy. The monks were alarmed, even Liu's grandpa, but Lao assured the escapees wouldn't cause any trouble.

He and Aiko returned to the Prisons, determined to finish the war if Shinnok should invade Earthrealm after attacking the heavens. They found Kai wounded by Shinnok's esteemed general, Reiko! Lao urged Aiko to restore the rookie's energy while he took on the enemy. He also used Aiko's club against his, even deflecting most of his thrown shurikens with his Whirlwind Spin. He seemed evenly matched until he was aided by Aiko's cardiokinesis, as well as holding the club while performing the aforementioned maneuver inspired by Shao Kahn! He then tossed Reiko straight into the deadly fan aloft, shattering his body!

He and Kai were fully restored by Reiko's remaining energy, and he headed with Aiko out of the prisons, until he grew worried of her speeding heart! She collapsed in pain and soon did Lao! Much to their horror, it was revealed to be Shinnok utilizing her rare skills! He assured he'd make use of both warriors and to lure the Champion to the Fire Well in the Netherrealm! Lao struggled to escape before he was fully submerged!

Liu Kang, Raiden, and Fujin reached Shinnok's temple, the Fire Well, and he and Aiko were shackled and chained, but they arrived too late for Lao and Aiko had their hearts corrupted. While Shinnok stunned the brothers, Liu was barely a match for the cardiokinetic and his best friend. Lao was on the offense brutally siccing him whether it'd be his hat or other martial arts. His objective was to decimate the Champion and make him join Shinnok before they should become Revenants just like in Aiko's dystopian future. Shinnok drew the hero close and was about to waste away his heart until Nightwolf performed a ritual that allowed his and the compatriots' strength to cross into the Netherrealm from the Edenian Palace. With Shinnok weakened by his pure memories and thoughts, he lost the Amulet temporarily by Liu's strong Kick, though Lao retrieved it via Teleport, and Shinnok attached it to the Staff! By the time Hanzo and Kuai restored the REAL Amulet at the Temple of Elements, Shinnok's powers ran out and realized he only was using the duplicate! Raiden stunned the usurped couple before taking them to the Jinsei.

Hours later, Lao was the first to come to by Fujin's tender touch and building his lost strength. He was considered lucky Shinnok didn't kill him nor Aiko, otherwise there'd be no reversal and they'd be too far gone. Liu and Johnny greeted them, and the monk forgave them for what they'd done... He stayed with them for several hours until they finally were strong enough to return to China. Despite the victory, even with Fujin assuring Shinnok won't return for another millennia or so since the Amulet remained on Earth, he still didn't feel whole...

A few days had passed since the end of the Netherrealm War. By the time Kung Lao and Aiko were finally out of recovery, they returned to the Wu Shi Academy with Liu, Sonya, Johnny, Kitana, Nightwolf and Kai. The Shaolin was escorting his disciple around and Lao wasn't himself... He soon reunited with his nephew who was curious on where the cool Edenians were heading as they beheld the large portal. He concluded they were returning home. His head was in a fog until a familiar Shokan entered his mind, forcing Lao to act as a stowaway with the refugees.

Lao wound up at Edenia, miles away from the city of Kuatan, particularly the Palace. He eventually arrived as he followed the Shokan, and Goro accepted to sign Kitana's treaty between his kind and the Centaurs, the one that had been interrupted by Shinnok's invasion. Only to have IT be abruptly halted by a sudden assault from a glowing buzzsaw turning out to be Kung Lao's hat!! Kitana urged him to not start another kombat, and Goro challenged the former monk. Never backing down, Lao explained this was a ceremonial strike for his ancestor whom Goro killed several centuries ago. Goro questioned if he wished to continue the brutal feud, to which Lao replied he just wanted to make things even and have peace between them. Under the circumstances, Goro was impressed over Lao's pride and skills, which reminded him on how his ancestor was in nobility, looks and spirit. Goro realized the last descendant's his spitting image and if he wished to have a son, he shall carry on their legacy, and the Great Kung Lao shall be proud of his accomplishments, and Lao shall be proud of his as well... They shook hands and Kitana was successful.

With Raiden as the new Elder God, he summoned most of his fellow warriors for a final farewell near Fujin's crater... Liu Kang, Kung Jin, and Aiko grieved for him the most. While Kung Lao hid his eyes and most of his face under his hat as he mourned...

Mortal Kombat: Vengeance[]

Kung Lao overslept his usual training session. He was so hasty as he headed to the kitchen where his nephew, sister-in-law, and Aiko were already having a hearty breakfast together. He took some quick bites on his fried eggs, when he observed the sporadic, volatile lightning striking the Academy! At first, he thought it was any other storm, until he noticed the bolts kept licking the Arena at the heart of the compound! He suspected it can be Raiden, with the Thunder God distressed. He urged Aiko to come along to which she was hesitant. He assured the astraphobic the bolts won't strike her, and with his comfort, she followed after him!

By the hand, Aiko chased him to the airy training ground where they indeed found Raiden as well as Nightwolf! He demanded to know what happened as soon as he saw Liu Kang's lifeless body, and Raiden informed he was slain by the Deadly Alliance. He was so distraught of the news, even the fact that Shang Tsung and Quan Chi invaded here. His persona almost instantly changed into pent-up hate when Raiden stated he managed to encase his soul in the golden dragon head. With the sound of his voice, it set Lao's doubtful mind at ease. He became more determined than ever to avenge his fallen brother and put a stop to the Deadly Alliance...

He then promised to make it possible, especially when Kai made him keep it. He and Aiko were making some preparations before the journey as he was communicating in Mandarin to Jin's mom that she mustn't tell him of Liu's fate, and if they aren't back within a week, then it'll all be for naught. He, Aiko, Nightwolf and Kiba took Raiden's portal to Shang Tsung's Island, the same place where he snuck upon at the end of the first tournament. Liu Kang reminded Lao of the portal they took, and the calamity and declaration following it, into the Lost Sea, a place between Earthrealm and Outworld. Raiden took the heroes there to rendezvous the other Kombatants that'd be summoned by Fujin. Until then, Lao must master a risky undertaking on being possessed by Liu's soul! He was nervous on the procedure, but Raiden believed it'll give them both the chance to outmaneuver the Deadly Alliance, as two separate heads aren't always better than one... He was hesitant, and Lao was suffering thru erratic symptoms, even losing consciousness, tense sensations, and a swelling brain, hallucinations and rapid trepidations as side effects. Aiko, Raiden and Nightwolf became his moral supporters during the crucial trials. Lao was impressed how his aerokinesis worked exceptionally well with Liu's pyrokinesis, as Raiden said oxygen's needed to create fire! He wished he could've been able to do Liu's powerful maneuvers himself though...

During a meditation session a few nights later, Lao began to dose off. He woke up in a colorless, barren landscape with islands floating and precipices everywhere. He wondered where he was, and Liu stated they'd merged minds. He remembered, according to Nightwolf, they must've shared their experiences while combined. He said each cliff must have a challenge to accomplish to prepare them for the Deadly Alliance. Lao let out Liu's spirit, he hovered to the first cliff and taught Lao of his forgotten Mantis techniques. A landform forged connecting to the next cliff in which he was remembering his specialty, the Shaolin Fist, and other Kung Fu moves. At first, he felt uneasy attacking Liu, but his astral form received no damage! The third cliff laid out a Broadsword, and Lao hadn't used it since his early teen years. His strategies were rustier than the blade itself, but he mastered each deadly swipe, even impalement.

Later on, Lao and Liu heard Raiden's voice, and he woke up back on the beach! He was lucky the God didn't have to use electroshock onto him. A portal opened and out walked Sonya and Johnny! Kiba smelt them and they were legit! Lao listened in on Raiden's observance of Quan Chi, followed by Moloch and Drahmin, escaping into Outworld, while Shang used the Nethership to travel onto Earth. Raiden said the duo was desperate on collecting souls, in which Lao thought it was Shang's second attempt to dominate Outworld; but he stated they only wanted to resurrect the undead army and Onaga, the dreaded Dragon King. Sonya recapped Hsu Hao's treacherous ways and how Fujin rendezvoused her and Johnny to the island while Fujin recruited other Kombatants. Lao remembered Jax saying that times move differently in each realm, after Raiden said it was a decade in the Netherrealm while it was only a year on Earth. He still sparred with Nightwolf, with their power boosts intact, before they were interrupted by a sudden squall. The F0 tornado only turned out to be Fujin who sent the remaining Kombatants (Kuai, Hanzo, and the former's apprentice, Frost) to the rendezvous point; he even bowed to Hanzo, no longer as enemies, even though Lao was warned he may lose himself once he confronts Quan. After an hour introducing themselves and making any last-minute preparations, the God brothers sent the heroes to the Celestial Portal which was only known to sorcerers and deities; Raiden stated he'll lose his powers once crossing over, so they all went underway.

By the time the team arrived, Lao was curious on the floating guardian heads there, in which he never recognized the so-called Asian sages. Raiden warned that they must overcome a trial to pass over to Outworld, a representation of their greatest adversary. The guardians conjured Kung Lao's challenge as he stepped up to the plate, which he noticed it mimicked his own Teleportation, which turned out to be himself in his Revenant form! He and Aiko recognized his sorry state from her heart melds, and Lao and his doppelganger were at a standoff. till Liu Kang offered to take over his body! He did and Lao's elemental abilities increased, and he noticed the undead was vulnerable to his pyrokinesis, even being outflanked by the Mantis style. Liu put him out of his misery as he got sliced by the razor-rimmed hat and combusted from the sliver of flame. Liu left Lao's body which made him buckle, and also suffer from an intense fever. Kuai used his ice abilities to cool him down, as did Frost with her canister of Articka water which soothed him almost instantly. Aiko recovered his stamina, and Raiden stated the way was clear. He reminded everyone to never separate and they're on their own as the Gods were still powerless.

Lao and his gang arrived within the Living Forest, according to Liu anyway. They recognized the area which seemed more dormant since the Edenians were reversing Kahn's and Shang's corruption. He and Nightwolf then spotted an opaque figure, and the former gave chase! He was about to dice him with his hat, but he assured he's only an alarmed Jax! He lost contact with the Special Forces and wandered aimlessly, then lost Cyrax and Kenshi. They reunited, though Aiko noticed a ruffle behind her. Lao was curious, and she figured someone was following them...

Liu stated they arrived closer to Edenia, much to his relief! Lao and the others arrived and reunited with the Edenian monarchs. Johnny remarked that Lao had some nerve to break the tragic news to them, and Jax complimented someone should. Sonya and Nightwolf offered to leave Lao and Aiko with the Edenians for business talk. Lao explained it all from Liu's death, and before Kitana was disheartened, Liu stated his soul was saved by Raiden and anointed Lao as his retainer. He asked Sindel what she knew of Onaga when he summarized Shang and Quan returned and their objective would be to resurrect Onaga and his army. Sindel recapped back in 8450 BC, Onaga preceded Kahn as Emperor of Outworld; Kahn was his advisor until he grew irritated working under him, thus poisoning the dragon and had his generals overcome the mummified army. From then on, Kitana and Jade volunteered to accomplish the mission, and Lao grew curious of Goro; Sindel dreaded he might get involved with his former master or stay in hiding regulating the Shokan with the Centaurs. Lao grew more determined to defeat his enemies and prevent them from achieving their goals.

Lao asked Nightwolf to sense the immense darkness, where the Deadly Alliance shall be stationed upon Jax's doubts on where the group should go. The shaman pointed to the northwest, much to Jade's dismay since the Wastelands were there, Tarkatan territory just above the Cobalt Mines. Lao was steadfast against the Onis, and Kuai was impressed he could master the Mantis techniques! After a while, Frost suggested to go to the tree lines, although Kitana took in Sonya's advice on traversing straight thru, then Aiko noticed that someone or something can be following them... Kung Lao wanted to investigate the woods, but he shook off the idea as he didn't want to be separated.

Ironically, the couple were as they spotted the obese passing out. To his shock, it turned out to be his former sensei, Bo' Rai Cho!! He picked up the foul stench of alcohol, possibly excrement, and gave him a slight kick in which it was caught! He broke away, then the lardo challenged him to a brawl! He was agle enough to avoid Bo's puke and gas, though his overweight body wound up crushing him! Aiko pitched in with her cardiokinesis expanding his heart to the point on exploding! Some of Bo's strength escaped into Lao until he implored her to stop! Bo ogled her for a moment, and he immediately came to her defense before his friends caught up. Lao and Bo were arguing against each other from the monster's banishment from the Academy to Bo no longer being in Earthrealm after Liu became Champion and thus never being there for the Shaolin, or simply falling from grace! As the group left, Lao was still ashamed from his bleak past since he'd been trained by him since he and Liu were kids. Aiko was surprised he wasn't mentioned to her in the past few years, but Liu stated it could just be old shame and trauma-induced anxiety. Lao kept on being assured that his friends have his back and he and Aiko were the last ones to take some shuteye before his eyes and head were heavy enough for him to sleep...

By the next day, he and his team made it inside the Lost Tomb. After noticing the rows of sarcophaguses, in which Kitana deciphered they belonged to the undead army of Onaga, he, Kuai, Hanzo and Jax started mashing them; with Lao using his technique, the fists of ruin. Until Aiko cried for him to watch out, in which he reflexed as he tossed his hat toward the threat within the darkened entryway. It turned out to be Moloch, one of the Onis of the Netherrealm, along with his partner, Drahmin, after being stunned by a swarm of flies! Jax assisted Hanzo against them, and by the time the nimbler demon was down, Lao stormed and strangled him, demanding for the whereabouts and his assistance against the Deadly Alliance! Drahmin refused to lend a hand, only to discourage the heroes they'd fail! Lao choked him harder until he heard Liu's voice to let him go. He reluctantly did, only to have Drahmin interpret the wounded Moloch and alert the team they'd be soon walking into Quan's trap, the fugitive of the underworld who betrayed the Onis. Lao was about to make his mark, though Drahmin helped Moloch give them the slip! Lao was furious on missing him, and Hanzo assured it won't be the last time meeting those persistent demons! Eventually, Lao regained his determined composure when Nightwolf traced their goal and Jade exasperated they'd be heading thru the dangerous Sarna Ruins.

Lao and Aiko were irritated that the Mask of Kun-Lo could've been named after his great ancestors, on account on sounding much like his namesake; Hanzo assured the Face could've been made even way before the Great Kung Lao's time. Nevertheless, the heroes heeded Jade's warnings of the intense heat, sandstorms and stray tornadoes. Kung Lao's hat, along with Kitana's fans, were vital as the group traversed thru the exhausting landscape, until some loose sand interfered. They spotted a cyclone and remembering Fujin's training from the summer before Shinnok's invasion stormed and ducked under the funnel! He conjured all his might reaching and slicing the heart of the storm using his Spin Time Brutality! He was able to decimate a F3 tornado, not without Fujin's assistance much to his dismay... He was successful as his cerulean whirlwind overpowered it but allowing him to fall! Luckily, he was caught by an invisible field! A man with a blindfold criticized it was foolish of him to disable a tornado! Sonya, Jax and Johnny were ecstatic to reunite with Kenshi! Lao was intrigued of his past, his psychokinesis and joining the Special Forces. His mission was to hunt Shang Tsung and find the Dragonfly, though Lao noticed Aiko's sudden change in her entranced demeanor.

She began to follow the distant tribal drums, and Lao gave chase to the Drum Arena! Much to his disdain, Aiko was under the Makeba's, and Konga's, intense thrall, even joining with the assembly. Kenshi challenged the chieftain and was successful, even speaking to Lao telepathically to retrieve his mate. The airship emerged and the team escaped! Kung Lao stuck to the dazed Aiko's side, even throughout the aerial journey. He explained to Kenshi of her sensitive, defective mind and he promised to empower her after they're successful.

The Dragonfly soon landed near a volcano as Sonya and Jax spotted the golden shimmer. The Special Agents, the cryomancers, and Hanzo went inside and Liu's spirit volunteered to be of some assistance; he let him roam freely. He stayed next to the idle ship, even when the main team was ambushed by a couple Outworld hobos! He was about to come to Aiko's rescue but was stupefied when he noticed Baraka! At first, he never believed his regret invading the Academy as he never served Kahn by choice, though Lao was dumbfounded how he knew Aiko so well, as they both escaped their dystopian future. Lao was very reluctant when the Tarkatan decided to fight against the Deadly Alliance and his malicious kind at the Palace, thinking he might lead them to a trap.

Lao was also appalled when he noticed his drunk master as a stowaway on the Dragonfly, though he was neutral as Baraka was bickering with him. Till Aiko believed the Tarkatan, and when Bo explained he's sober enough to assist his other student, Li Mei, and save her and her people from the sorcerers. Bo' then taught Lao the secret, tricky Whirlwind Kick, similar maneuver to Liu Kang's Flying and Bicycle Kicks. Bo' admired Lao's utterance when he mentioned that Liu said the training he requires is mental, not physical, and that he can't surpass his limitations until he acknowledges them. Till the Dragonfly was shot down by the Red Dragons! Lao was lucky enough to crawl onto the tilted deck and holler for everyone to get close to him so he could Teleport them away from the doomed vessel! The only problem was, he had no idea where he was going; he warped everyone away when he barely noticed the numerous bodies surrounding him and obscuring the bright sky!

He was one of the first Kombatants to come to, along with Aiko, Nightwolf and Kiba. Liu Kang's spirit theorized they'd been revived somewhat, contrary to the shaman's revitalizing ritual he conjures from his ancestors. The quartet reunited with the other fallen warriors before the Matokan pointed out the Palace was a mile away! Sonya suggested to go in discreetly, and Kenshi sensed distress coming from nearby. So, the gang took the tunnels yonder until they immersed into a torture chamber; Hanzo pointed out it belonged to the Oni, Moloch! Kung Lao assisted Kenshi escorting a dying prisoner, he was too weak to speak so the swordsman read his mind. He had visions of the violent storm known as the Soulnado, a secret only known to the Sun Do, as a way to use souls from the Heavens; Lao feared the sorcerers would absorb them or resurrect Onaga and his army. He was determined to dissipate it like he did with the cyclone in the Sarna Ruins, but Kenshi stated it won't be the same. The victim died before the heroes encountered Moloch and Drahmin! Hanzo and Baraka volunteered to defeat them in a tag team match and seeing the heroic Tarkatan struggling, Lao offered him his broadsword to impale the feral Drahmin without his mask! He soon finished Moloch and Lao was impressed of their teamwork!

Lao was urgent to take down the Deadly Alliance as soon as the heroes beheld Shang's Palace. Although he had his gauntlets full dealing with the Tarkatan armies. He wasn't able to assist against the Red Dragons either. Though he was awestruck as he noticed the God brothers had returned! He doubted their powers had been enhanced as former Elder Gods, even though they were known to be powerless in Outworld. The team reunited after Jax's and Kenshi's victories, though they noticed Bo' has slipped away, desperate to save Li Mei. Kitana suggested a short rest, even though Lao was still anxious to decimate Shang.

At the Tarkatan War Kamp, Lao meditated next to the bonfire with Aiko and Nightwolf; his soul wound up in the same placid landscape combining his subconscious with Liu's. It was just a quick review of his abilities including his Whirlwind Kick, in which Liu complimented he got the hang of. They woke up as Nightwolf was ready to pass on the new broth which was said to help focus their minds even in midst of rage. Aiko passed it around while Lao discussed with the Kombatants; they weren't certain who Lao's wingman'd be, though Liu was. Lao wondered how long he was out of it, which was a few hours; Nightwolf stated he sleeps like the dead, and Liu added why he's often late for class. He was so regretful he was unable to save Liu from his tragic fate, though Raiden assured it still lied in his hands. The heroes soon witnessed the Soulnado, and Fujin ordered Lao to assist him on shutting down the source of endless souls! They did while Hanzo lost to his wraith self! They witnessed him being torn by the storm, making them dread! They were entangled and about to be torn, until a lardo pushed the dead souls away. It was Bo' Rai Cho!! Fujin ushered him to decimate the funnel, and the portal closed!

Courtesy of Aiko's heart gem, it invigorated Lao's energy! He and Fujin witnessed Raiden struggling against the Deadly Alliance, and Liu's soul went straight for Lao's body! They merged once more, making aerosol moves while Nightwolf volunteered with his soul-empowered weapons and draining their vitality! With the ferocious Whirlwind technique and some assistance, Lao switched between Quan and Shang, though the murderer was his main target! At one point, he was at Shang's mercy, trying to steal Liu's soul, til Nightwolf intervened with the Jack the Ripper strategy! And thru his rage after remembering seeing Liu dead on the lei tai, Lao became irate and rained down severe blows till he conjured his Tornado Brutality!! Shang and the funnel eventually exploded! Leaving a wounded Lao in its wake.

Kenshi and Nightwolf carried him to the Nethership, where he rested in the cabin. Raiden and Liu declared he's the new Champion and equal to the chosen monk! Though he shouldn't worry of the eternal curse as it wasn't an official tournament. Aiko remained by his side as he slept till the team finally reached Earthrealm.

At first, he was awakened when sunlight shined thru the side window in the Nethership, and he groggily said he needed to sleep more... Several minutes later, Aiko and Liu woke him up again, then he was escorted into the Academy by Aiko, Kiba, and Nightwolf. He tuned out the monks cheering for their victory and their cries for the loss of the Champion. Lao was then greeted by his cheerful tween nephew and Jin's mom, before he was led to the built Tomb. He was awestruck at the sight of it, even the sacred hearth. He observed the candles surrounding it and began to light a stick of incense. He placed it with the others, took out the dragon amulet and bowed low as he prayed for Liu's safe passage for his dear friend and brother... Lao began to tear up as he reflected on the memories of being his bitter rival and companion. Liu forgave him on being so jealous and short, always wanting a peaceful life but his efforts became overshadowed by him... Lao mourned him farewell, until Nightwolf interrupted the ascent!

Lao hardly processed that the resurrection of the Dragon King, Onaga, had been prophesized!!

Kung Lao, along with several other Kombatants, rushed thru a portal that led to Shang Tsung's Palace where the God brothers were fighting against a monstrosity named Onaga, the resurrected Dragon King! Lao took on the offensive as he tossed his hat which chipped the serpent's left shoulder. That got the dragon's attention and Lao charged into the fray with his hat drawn. The might of the Dragon King was too much for him, even his Whirlwind Kick, in which he caught his leg and attempted to pull it off! Until Liu Kang's fiery spirit intervened, though he was being strangled! Lao summoned him back into the amulet when Sonya, Jax, Johnny, Kitana and Nightwolf got involved. Needless to say, their efforts were futile, and Raiden prevented Lao by stunning his excruciating body! He was too weak and all he did was observe his mentor conjure lightning into him! Fujin knew what was coming and before the fighters knew it, they were each caught in the explosion decimating the Palace and leaving only a scratch on Onaga!

The next thing he knew was he woke up outside, within a primitive village in Earthrealm. Trying to find his way back to the Wu Shi Academy, he noticed a bunch of kids and peddlers ran thru him, as if he never existed... He also noticed anything he could do, including his kombat skills were useless, almost as if he were just in his astral form. He did come across a boy named Shujinko, as well as their master, Bo' Rai Cho, training him in several classes, then meeting up with the sphere named Damashi, but there was no interaction. He found about his quest searching for the Kamidogu and besting his mentor in kombat by mimicking and mastering the skills of each warrior! He soon observed the Earthrealm Kamidogu within the Lin Kuei temple still in northern China and he realized he was somewhere in the past...

Eventually, he followed Shujinko to the portal Damashi led him to, but before he stepped in, he noticed a familiar voice speak to him. Sure enough, it was Raiden! Lao asked what was happening to him, but it's more like when... They were sent back in time to observe the prophesized kid, and Lao hadn't yet been born; it was 1964, but he and Liu hadn't existed. As soon as he entered thru the Portal to the Nexus, he heard a deep voice whisper...

"Kung Lao... Wake up, Kung Lao, the chosen one."

He awakened inside the Jinsei Chamber and noticed Fujin, Aiko, Jade, Kuai, Frost and Nightwolf were still alive. Lao told the Wind God of his subconscious journey, and he was relieved Raiden's still alive...albeit clinging onto life. Fujin then instructed he must head to Edenia and give the royals info; Onaga would soon march thru Outworld, yet there were still some mysteries to be solved, and he only found the fake amulet. He believed the wise Sindel may have some intel on defeating the Dragon King, and Lao remembered her mentioning him serving Kahn before he set out against the Deadly Alliance. He went thru the portal, and Liu's spirit kept him warm thru the bitter cold of an early winter.

Luckily, Liu Kang's fiery soul was able to keep him warm as he headed to Edenia. He fought off several Onis thanks to his new aerosol abilities, and he soon met up with Hanzo! It was surprising the Elder Gods brought him back and he was willing to redeem himself as he failed to stop Shujinko from kollecting all the Kamidogu. They arrived, but they were blocked off by the royal guard who seemed to be on high alert, even Sindel over the wellbeing of her daughter. Good thing Goro showed up and konvinced them otherwise.

Sindel recollected Kahn's imperialistic rule to Kung Lao and Hanzo. And the former monk was determined to gather the Champions from all the realms, aside from attaining intel on Shujinko's journey. As soon as he and Hanzo left the Palace, he kollapsed again!

He came to within an elaborate chamber and spotted the teen Shujinko and Damashi who described they'd reached the Nexus, the realm between realms. He walked him thru on placing the first Kamidogu onto the altar, when a red portal opened to the Netherrealm. He followed the duo thru it, thinking it'd lead to more clues on stopping Onaga. He spotted him help out Ermac look for the Soul Stones to increase his prowess in which as a spirit, Lao failed to stop them. Even when he couldn't intervene between Shinnok nor assist Ashrah; it was then he knew that Shujinko was up to no good and was blindly loyal, even worse than Liu Kang! By the time he finally found the Kamidogu, they returned to the Nexus and soon into a yellow portal... Although at times, Lao felt tempted on staying in the Netherrealm and be swayed to join Shinnok and the Brotherhood of Shadow; the intense atmosphere seemed to jog memories of him and Aiko having their hearts corrupted.

Lao then woke up in an opaque room with the sun shining through the curtains. He met Li Mei who'd been tending him; ever since she saw him be carried by Hanzo after he passed out, she offered them asylum. She even tried to get affectionate with him, but he refused stating his heart belonged to Aiko. Hanzo was relieved Lao came to again, and the Champion stated he hadn't found a lot of answers concerning Onaga, excepting when Raiden talked about the One Being and why the Elder Gods hid the Kamidogu to prevent a repeated calamity before he left the Nexus a second time. He knew Shujinko was bad news...

Hanzo suggested to search for Havik, as he seemed to be a more suitable recruit than his polar opposite, Hotaru. Li Mei offered to lead them to the ancient portal, even though only those who were Champions of their realms may enter it. Lao gazed at his own heart gem, thinking about Aiko's fairing, before she encouraged him to get moving. He was disheartened he needed to leave Li behind and at the possible mercy of Onaga.

She was successful on finding it thru the Kuatan Jungle, until the trio was ambushed by archers, including Johnny! Lao refused to fight him, but Hanzo warned that since he was a wraith bound to Onaga, words won't go thru to him; he must defeat him in kombat. He was ab;e to defeat him easily, even using the vines for leverage, until the archers began to gang on them! Luckily, Fujin knocked them off their feet and encouraged Hanzo and Lao to enter the portal while he took the wounded Cage and Li to Earthrealm. He reprimanded Lao that Onaga might monitor them before he was tempted to steal the Earth Kamidogu, so they went into the Chaosrealm.

As soon as Lao entered it, he felt a tad nauseous and light-headed. He even stopped himself from looking at the lifeless sky which he could've sworn was fizzing as it would've made his headache worse. Hanzo guided him thru the intrinsic landscape till they found the clergy of Chaos, Havik. Lao just sat aside from them as he hallucinated Havik talking to Shujinko as a new wanderer to overthrow the Seidan Guardsmen and save their water supply. Moments later, he couldn't tell it was either Hanzo or a mirrored version of Havik wearing an orange yellow garb. Either way, Hanzo bested Havik in battle who was impressed that he broke the shackles of Quan Chi on his own! Havik offered to overthrow Onaga and his vile control over the realms. Hanzo quickly carried him back into the portal to the Nexus; even taking a massive portal to Havik and back in which Lao commented on the realm's futuristic style. Hanzo stated the world developed rapidly, even moving time faster without perception.

Kung Lao was still unconscious as Hanzo carried him thru the Nexus and into Earthrealm. Moments later, Liu and Jerrod arrived beside them, and the former offered to piece together his broken mind. He was successful as Hanzo observed Lao moaning his name, till he finally came to. He appreciated his brother assisting him as he followed Liu's voice in the dark, though he became startled as he noticed Ermac; Liu assured he was the benevolent lost Edenian king. Hanzo gave him and Ermac the scoop, and Lao doubted the remaining recruit, Shujinko, would be capable on stopping Onaga. Still, Ermac traced his frail spirit and detected there was an ominous force interfering him. Lao and the others headed straight to it, but not before Liu's spirit was being unexpectedly pulled! Thanks to the dragon amulet held by Ermac, he was able to save it before they progressed.

They chased the omnipotence near the Temple of Light and found Liu's reanimated corpse bound by Houan chains; even worse, their mentor, Raiden, was corrupted after his sacrifice onto Onaga! Showing his merciless colors on defending Earthrealm, Lao tossed in his hat to distract the enforcer and challenged them! With Liu's spirit empowering him, they easily won, but not over the doppelganger, as he left them paralyzed along with Kenshi and Fujin! Ermac escorted the former away, while Nightwolf tackled the former monk away and declared to stay down! Encased in his soul kinesis, they were protected from the violent bursts of lightning conjured by the shaman! The more benevolent Raiden emerged and offered streams of Jinsei to his doomed victims. In the Grotto, Lao reunited with Aiko for a short, tight moment as Raiden reminded him to reunite the Champions and finish off Onaga while Nightwolf shall prepare for the Sin Eater ritual; Shujinko was assassinated, so it was entirely up to them, while the rest of the heroes would defend the Temple of Elements.

Kung Lao and the heroes arrived in the Nexus. Hanzo and Liu reminded him of that foolhardy stunt to steal the Earthrealm Kamidogu and lure Onaga there. Ermac agreed on the strategy, which to their surprise, it worked! Lao hesitantly took the amulet and had a flashback when Onaga revealed himself as the false deity, as a consciousness willing to unite the realms and become the One Being. The last piece was still missing, and Liu unveiled Damashi was Japanese for deception according to his grandfather. Lao confronted Onaga, refusing to surrender the amulet; Liu then urged him to run from portal to portal to get Havik's and other onlookers' attention that the threat has come to life.

Lao was chased by Onaga into the Nexus, the Outworld forest, the Chaosrealm as Liu's spirit shielded him, the Orderrealm, and returned to the Nexus again before he was clipped due to his wavering strength! Luckily, he was able to grab the attention of the remaining Champions, Goro and Havik. As Lao was gravely wounded by the dragon, the Shokan came to his aide and stole the Outworld Kamidogu! He brought Lao to the forest and recuperated him with the Kamidogus' energies and escorted him back where the realms' defenders were ready. Lao had no hesitation for Liu's spirit to use it as a host! Havik broke thru and fought Onaga first before it eventually shifted onto Lao. With their combined strength and skills, they were the best, even next to Goro and Havik! Even still, Onaga was standing, until Liu suggested to destroy each of the Kamidogu making the dragon falter! Everyone unleashed their fury after shattering their own amulets, before Liu urged Lao to perform the lethal Razor's Edge and conjure the F4 Tornado; each Kombatant backed him away to the funnel before Onaga was tossed violently! His soul began to ooze out of Reptile's body until Nightwolf bound him to the Netherrealm! Lao was too weak to endure more as he lost consciousness; Raiden then escorted him to the Jinsei.

Lao rested for a good long while until Aiko's heart gem began to brighten and warm her chest indicating he was on the mend. Lao was the first to exit the Sky Temple after several minutes and he reunited with Aiko and Li Mei who missed him dearly. He also felt sorry of Sun Do's plight. Minutes later, Fujin and Nightwolf met up with them, soon Raiden as his Shaolin brother is himself once again. They were known as the Champions of Mortal Kombat and savior of all realms without having the eternal curse!

Final Kombat[]

KungLao

Kung Lao's attire in Final Kombat

He was first seen as a Revenant chasing after Aiko and her refugee kamp along with his undead partners Kitana, Nightwolf, Kabal, Kuai, Stryker, and led by Liu Kang! They were about to be decimated by the fugitive inside a defective automobile, about to crash into them until she instantaneously went back in time.

Only the real Lao was waking her up from her nightmare, one of a few she had as of late... They soon were ready for breakfast and Jin was already in middle school when his mom was chatty in Mandarin of the newsbreak China received of that fiery incident in Charred Mountain, destroying many members of the Red and Black Dragons; he translated the story to Aiko, until they heard chirps coming from his wristband. Raiden needed them to be summoned to the Dragon Grotto. They both met him, Liu, Kitana, Kenshi, Hanzo, Kuai, Frost, Smoke, and their new recruit, the scout Frederick. Raiden summarized that Armageddon and Blaze's plot were upon all the realms and Lao agreed with Liu that Blaze may not be their only adversary, with the possibility of their enemies gaining on the opportunity. The Thunder God and Hanzo theorized their machinations can be in the Netherrealm and since he was once tainted, Lao was willing for the espionage along with Aiko, Nightwolf, Frederick, and Hanzo.

Kung Lao looked over the Bloody Sea as Raiden was making negotiations with Kharon; he remembered cruising over the same sea with Liu in Outworld as they assisted Kuai against the damned stragglers. Hanzo recalled that was when he fought the monks and Kuai left during his hunt for his lost brother. Lao assured he has come a long way since his corruption and trusted he won't betray him. Lao led Aiko on deck and was the first to notice her queasiness despite the melee. He was unable to help her as she fell off, but luckily Caro saved her in the nick of time! Nevertheless, Lao was one of the few fighters that were vital ascending Shinnok's gauntlet challenges, and he was also miffed once he met Taven assisting the fallen Elder God. He and Aiko were soon distracted by the omnipresence tempting them, until they noticed it was Shinnok albeit deformed. He learned he made a double after he diffused while the positive energy overwhelmed him. Lao, Nightwolf and Aiko were outraged he made a dark duplicate of her heart gem which also toggled lost memories of his family as he was enraged to the Elder Gods because of their pettiness and won't object Kronika as a titan of time. Lao felt slight sympathy but was still processing everything as they returned to Earth.

Lao stayed with Aiko and Caro who were recovering in the Grotto, and the former two received visions from their heart gems, thinking it was Shinnok transmitting. They saw a vision in which a cave engraving had its head erased, to which Caro concluded that Blaze was more than an embodiment of destruction as victims suffer a fate worse than death, to be erased from existence. The trio soon took a nap for a few hours before Raiden awakened them, and Lao agreed Aiko's heart gems may be tapped by Shinnok. They laid their gems in a considerable distance once they returned to the Academy, and he picked up Aiko's temporary trance as she received a transmission from someone familiar... He mentioned the cryptic message again only their hearts must be one and together. They soon met up with Liu returning from Edenia and participated in the trials similar to those before the first tournament; Lao recalled he was second to Liu, only the monk was skeptical and left for America, so Lao was chosen as representative by default. That was until Liu returned on a path of vengeance, thus his bitter rival and anxieties while he snuck aboard. Just like before, Lao passed all tests much like his brother and was tied in first. However, since Aiko wasn't qualified, Lao along with Frederick decided to stay with her while Kai, Liu and Nightwolf went to the Edenian soiree.

He and Aiko went to their shared bedroom one last time. She assured that Jin'd return from school any minute, and Lao theorized Jin and the commoners may have their assurance from Raiden when Armageddon strikes. Lao was saddened as he wanted to promise Aiko to do one thing, to stay out of the Battle, no matter what. She was hesitant, but they became passionate in which it seemed to last for hours. He was soon ready, and he headed outside of the Academy where Fujin stood before they went to the Edenian Palace.

Goro honored Kung Lao for being on the same side, even wishing he had the same chance with his ancestor, when they should fight in the Battle of Armageddon. He rode the Netherwing to the southern crater and was one of the first to disembark. He was awed as he watched Liu and Raiden's merged self, until he was caught in a scrimmage against the vicious Baraka! He was evenly matched until his legs were sliced, and the time-displaced Baraka aided him. He recovered thru Aiko's heart gem and followed Liu, Taven and Fujin toward the rising pyramid! Liu urged the trio to stay put as the other warriors refused to listen while they were fatally wounded racing up to Blaze. They promised to assist the Fire God for any invasions, even if he should assist him against Blaze.

Liu Kang, Kung Lao, Taven and Fujin observed the fatal ascension to Blaze with their allies losing or being dead. Spotting the Saurians, Liu urged the Chameleons to take him and the trio up. He assigned the demigod, the Wind God, and his brother to defend it while Liu marched up to be stopped by his enemies. Lao teleported up following Liu, and the new god stated he wanted to deal with the unhinged fire spawn.

Taven, Fujin and Lao rushed up knowing Liu and Raiden were sacrificing their lives for all life! He forced them down as he redirected Blaze's detonation, but his strength won't hold. As a last attempt, he made a burst of flames, only...it was a flame shield, protecting his allies from Blaze's which was rumored to erase Kombatants from existence!! The firestorm raged from the Pyramid making everyone lose consciousness from the volatile impact! Liu and Raiden managed to utter their last words in unison, "I, must win..." Before he was never seen again... The last one who awakened from the recuperating rainstorm was Kung Lao who seemed the most out of it. He soon recollected Liu and Raiden's tragic loss as he rushed up the Pyramid which reduced in height and had its top reduced to rubble. He kept calling their names, even looking thru the shady spaces, still no sign of them... He Teleported back onto the top and his feet almost slipped, when he tore thru the soil, a metallic, red headband was shown... Lao sunk as his body trembled and realized that Raiden and Liu were gone...

His kompatriots followed his scream and Sonya wondered where the merged warrior was; Lao made a tearful reiteration, and everyone mourned for Liu and Raiden...

A day had passed, and he startled Aiko and the denizens near the Yellow River all thinking he was undead. Aiko's cardiokinesis made Lao's heart gem glow as he clutched his aching chest. She slowly lowered and then rushed to him. Lao apologized for keeping her from seeing him and they made a tearful reunion; Lao stated he managed to hold onto her heart and Liu's headband... They both shed some tears before Lao visited Liu's tomb. He made some offerings onto Liu's statue, from his spiked arm blades, his headband and dragon armor. He was hesitant to put the band on, but he managed despite his mounting grief. He then sank and sobbed while Aiko remained by his side...

They hardly notice the eternal flame churn to blue and the whisper of Lao's name, until an elderly man descended. He spoke Lao's name which startled the couple as they beheld Liu Kang but as his immemorial self and new Keeper of Time. He denounced that Lao's legacy has come full circle and he's now the Chosen One and Earth's protector alongside Fujin! Lao was deeply humbled, and he wishes to see his elder brother again someday...

Kung Lao, Earthrealm's new protector taking Liu Kang's mantle

He was soon meditating on the we tei of the Wu Shi Arena, and he managed to see Liu a few times. He was also able to sense Kai's ki as he snuck from behind and Lao tossed him over! Kai was impressed and Lao enlisted him as his prodigy. Jin and Aiko met up with them and she was excited to have Johnny produce her fics as...books for the moment before feature films as he had Cassie coming. Jin hoped for Lao and Aiko to settle, although they started to once she shown her diamond engagement ring! Lao planned on adopting Jin and training him in the ways of the Shaolin by 18, and he still pines for Liu to visit...

Several years later... Lao had been one of several Kombatants boarded in a Black Hawk amongst the new Special Forces; even having Kai, Aiko and Jin as fresh members! They embarked toward Kotal's turf with their allies from Outworld and Edenia and faced off with Kotal and his new recruits in what used to be Kahn's Arena! Just another day's work for the new Chosen One!

Kontentment[]

Lao went for personal training with his mind as he sought after enlightenment when he reinstated with the Order of Light, while he and Aiko were still mourning for Liu and Raiden's sacrifices... Hours later, once his first session was over, Aiko announced that the elder time-hoppers bore a demigod named Cheung Kang!

Koherence[]

Look in Koherence

Kung Lao was briefly mentioned a few times. He was first leaving the Kung Kottage with Raiden while Jin wished him luck. He then saw Aiko thru his heart gem when he woke up one morning, yearning for her.

Kung Lao's portrait

A few days later he was driven into the Matokan hot dance with Liu, Raiden and Nightwolf; he was one of the last three attendees, and by the time he arrived and heard the enticing drums, he awaited the emergence of the last child once he got dressed and painted for the occasion. When the elder led the assembly, he immediately followed suit with the other tribesmen. He quickly became enthralled, having that deep fascination Aiko had as he watched the adoption and mingled. At times he felt he wished he was a part of them, but...he'd grown so deep that he hardly noticed Fujin's riveting, soul-enriching number at the Sky Temple! It wasn't until his heart gem ignited that broke him out of his thrall, restoring his yearning for Aiko. He asked Raiden as the ending process began, and he reminded him they needed to say farewell first. He nearly forgotten that the youngest born wanted to be a skilled warrior by him and Liu!

Months after Armageddon, Lao was with Aiko and Jin as she discussed of the past experience, uncertain as to why she's still easily enthralled. Lao came to her defense he felt the same, even though the drums' cadence and influence were more direct. He was astonished having Fire God Liu Kang make an unexpected visit and offered Lao and Aiko to visit the Hourglass! He watched it churn to the distant past confirming the White Lotus that the Makeba are ancestors of Earth's aboriginals! He was proud their hearts had been restored but mostly beyond flabbergasted when Aiko's ancestors were once Matokan! He hoped that they can use it to their advantage, even be more in tune with Great Kung Lao's spirit. He offered to be trained by Nightwolf and Liu Kang to harness the energies of their ancestors and the tribal techniques!

AiKangLao, the Power Trio in the Darkseid War

During Unaliving Liu Kang's roleplay known as the Unaliving War, originally called the Darkseid War, he soon found and converted his Shaolin Brother as a Revenant. Aiko soon found them discussing their union and their conquest onto the Elder Gods, and both Lao and Aiko were amazed to unite in the Netherrealm and embracing what they should've had in their dystopian future. Keeping his prestige in mind, Chieftain Kang and Aiko promised he'd be respected as much as each other. They're known as the Power Trio, AiKangLao!

The Tribal Ceremony[]

TribalCeremony4Gathering

Kung Lao was seen dancing wildly around the bonfire embracing the tribal customs and the golden opportunity to prove his worth before the Unaliving War. He was so proud and trigger happy to be there...!

After being converted by Chieftain Liu Kang, he soon heard from Nightwolf of the annual Tribal Ceremonies when they gathered and chosen various tribesmen, and since he and Aiko became fascinated with the tribal customs, he then converted his nephew, Kung Jin, and both were eager to embrace them. Although it was thanks to the Chieftain and Cjieftess this was a golden opportunity to prepare for war against Darkseid! There, Kung Lao wasn't deeply mesmerized but also trigger happy in prep for another major battle and prove his worth!

Trivia[]

  • At first, Ikran had no interest in him, as when she was 6 while MKII was released for the SNES, she thought she was some dull, average cowboy judging by his outfit and deadly hat. Unfortunately, she wasn't into the arcade games but in the console games, thus little is known about each character. However, when she saw him during a LP of Shaolin Monks by Ferocious Wraith (aka Warlock Waluigi), her impression changed for the better! She was always irritable how he was treated as the underdog, even when he hadn't been featured in MK's other media such as Defenders of the Realm, and the 2 MK movies; heck, when Liu Kang stated he's the "descendant of Kung Lao" before the final battle in MK 1995, even Shang addressing to Goro, it did cause massive confusion till Ikran discovered the Great Kung Lao!
  • Admittedly she was also turned on by him during the intro sequence of Shaolin Monks, and she was relieved he was chosen in Wraith's LP since hearing Liu Kang's war cries would've been cringey and annoying after a while.
  • He shall be voiced by Joe Yau in Ikran's stories. However, that all changed before she wrote The Return of the Dragon King. By a unanimous decision on a Twitter poll, Will Yun Lee (the portrayer in MKX) shall be chosen as the new VA in that fic; Ikran was unsure if she wanted to keep Joe Yau, but she wanted to try someone new. It was decided by a landslide against him, especially since he seems to be portrayed as his humbler self like in GOLD-Armageddon.
  • It's likely they may share roles in her upcoming fic, Final Kombat.
  • She wanted Kung Lao and Nightwolf, her two upmost favorite characters, to have a good cowboy-Indian dynamic; contrary to those archaic Western cliches.
  • Kung Lao can be seen in Mortal Kombat II, Mortal Kombat 3, and Shaolin Monks wearing the Chinese character 武 which means military/wu shu/martial arts. However, when asked about this character, John Tobias stated that it is Chinese for "war"
  • Kung Lao also had a band named after him known as Kung Lao and the Scorpions, a rock/pop band created with Anthony Marquez who's a kungfu expert and portrayed him in MKII & 3, along with Philip Ahn who portrayed Shang Tsung in those two titles. The main performer functions as the lead singer!
  • Unlike in the games, Kung Lao may be a bit cocky and witty, however after dealing with the repercussions of the Champion's curse like his ancestor, his personality changes. He's humbler and vulnerable afterwards, and seems to be remorseful, whether he feels he's failing to meet his expectations or worse when he became one of Shinnok's thralls, even as a Revenant in Aiko's future via heart meld. He does maintain his protective and courageous side in terms of his friends and Earthrealm, but not as eager on becoming the winner anymore. He still desires to live a peaceful life, even with his nephew and Aiko, though he still maintains his outspoken and earnest persona, and wouldn't hesitate to fight for those he cares for.
  • In Final Kombat, Ikran was never sure who Lao'd be voiced by, until she watched the first part of Konquest Mode; she then decided Lao'd continue to be voiced as Will Jun Lee like in her last epic, while Taven shall be voiced by Joe Yau, the previous actor, since Taven sounded similar to Lao in Shaolin Monks.
  • According to the MK1's site source code, his purpose is prestige. As his desire is to be Champion and the top dog, even maintaining his ancestor's glory.
  • Ikran often considers Aiko to be the American Juliet as Kung Lao is the Chinese Romeo.
