Golbez, called Man in Black before his identity is revealed in The After Years, is a non-player character and the secondary antagonist in Final Fantasy IV and a playable character in Final Fantasy IV: The After Years. In Final Fantasy IV, he is an antagonist, a powerful sorcerer who pursues the Crystals. In the English localization of the 3D versions, Golbez is pronounced [ˈɡoʊɫˌbɛz].

Golbez is a warrior of Chaos in Dissidia Final Fantasy and Dissidia 012. He comes to the cycle of wars as the antagonist representing Final Fantasy IV. He is a powerful spellcaster, and despite wearing a full suit of armor, remains agile. Golbez works behind the other villains' backs, attempting to assist the heroes while remaining their enemy. As Cecil's rival and older brother, Golbez considers himself stained with darkness beyond the point of salvation, and so walks the dark path he feels his brother should not.

Body of Dark, Heart of Light[]

Golbez was first seen inside the Gateway of the Giant of Babil. He found Cecil who sensed an evil aura emitting from a Chaos warrior. Golbez tried to explain and identify himself to his kid brother, though as a warrior for evil, Cecil refused to acknowledge him. They got into a sparring match, destroying all the pipes exposing all the elements similar to Golbez's elemental Fiends, but eventually Cecil realized who he was beneath the armor.

With the Paladin calm, Golbez reiterated he's his lost brother, and that Cecil can make the choice working for Cosmos and ending the eternal conflict. He saw hope in him as he has the ability to wield both light/dark. Cecil was in doubt as even though his intentions are good, he still wields darkness. Golbez told him what matters is who he is and what he fights for. For the sake of his friends, Cosmos, saving himself from corruption, his homeland. Although it was all disregarded in the 13th cycle while Cecil had his memories erased by Shinryu and Golbez challenged his purpose.

Trials of a King/Conquest of the Blue Planet[]

Golbez, as the kid Theodor, was seen as Fusoya and Cecil visited Mist in the past. They saw him talk to Kluya and being determined to be a peaceful user of magic like him, also admiring watching the Moons and yearning for his father's home. Then, Kluya and soon Cecilia died just before Cecil was born.

Golbez returned as his Eidolon, the Shadow Dragon, as he controlled it telepathically. He was still sleeping in the Moon, but he still watches over Cecil at the Blue Planet. He knew of the Injukhal threat and being controlled by them and Domin, so he exacted his revenge as the Dragon enwrapping the chieftain in his tail, biting down the Big Fang onto him, and dropping his lifeless vessel into the sea! Golbez was glad to see his brother again and reminded him on what he must do before fading.

Dissidia Shadowgate[]

Golbez doesn't show up until near the end along with Jecht. He was impressed on how the Cosmos warriors defeated both Chaos and the Behemoth, as well as how much his brother and Kain had developed. After the keep collapsed, Golbez was able to return to the Blue Planet, though he was only seen piloting the Lunar Whale as Cecil saw it soar beside the Moon, looking to find himself.

This did take place after he dealt with the Dark Knight at the Lunar Subterrane of the return of the New Moon. It's most likely he wound up in Dissidia after succumbing to the Black Fang.
