Groot (/ɡruːt/) is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Created by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber and Jack Kirby, the character first appeared in Tales to Astonish #13 (November 1960). An extraterrestrial, sentient tree-like creature, the original Groot first appeared as an invader that intended to capture humans for experimentation.

The character was reintroduced as a heroic, noble being in 2006, and appeared in the crossover comic book storyline "Annihilation: Conquest". Groot went on to star in its spin-off series, Guardians of the Galaxy, joining the team of the same name. Groot has been featured in a variety of associated Marvel merchandise, including animated television series, toys and trading cards. Vin Diesel voices Groot, "child" Groot, and "teen" Groot in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), and Avengers: Endgame (2019), while Krystian Godlewski played the character via performance capture in the first film. Baby Groot will return for the upcoming Disney+ short form show I Am Groot. Fred Tatasciore voices Groot on the Disney California Adventure ride Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout. Diesel will return to voice the character in Thor: Love and Thunder (2022) and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023). Diesel also voiced Groot as a cameo in the 2018 Disney animated film Ralph Breaks the Internet. Since his film premiere and animated series debut, Groot has become a pop culture icon, with his repeated line "I am Groot" becoming an Internet meme.

  • Introduced in the live-action film Guardians of the Galaxy, he and his companion Rocket attempt to collect a bounty on Peter Quill's head, only to be arrested by the Nova Corps and imprisoned in the Kyln prison. The three join forces with Gamora and Drax to escape and eventually go on to help the Nova Corps stop Ronan the Accuser. While Groot seemingly sacrifices himself to protect his newfound friends, saying "We are Groot" before he does so, Rocket recovers a twig, which slowly regrows into a miniature Groot.
  • In the live-action film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, "Baby Groot" continues to travel with the Guardians but displays childlike behavior. He later helps them stop Ego from terraforming the universe and grows up into a rebellious adolescent stage.
  • In the live-action film Avengers: Infinity War, the adolescent Groot maintains his rebelliousness and defiant attitude. After the Guardians rescue Thor, he takes Groot and Rocket with him to forge a weapon capable of killing Thanos. Groot assists the dwarf king Eitri in molding the weapon and severs one of his arms to form its handle. With his new weapon, Stormbreaker, Thor travels to Earth with Rocket and Groot to help the Avengers battle Thanos' forces. However, Thanos succeeds in using the Infinity Stones to initiate the Blip, which Groot falls victim to.
  • In the live-action Avengers: Endgame, Groot is restored to life and joins the Avengers' battle against an alternate timeline version of Thanos. Afterwards, Groot attends Tony Stark's funeral and departs Earth with the Guardians and Thor.
  • Groot will return in the upcoming films Thor: Love and Thunder and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Ikran's F-Zero timeline[]

Groot, as Baby Groot, jumped five centuries into the future with the other Guardians thru a black hole. Groot has become fast friends with Rick and Tinsel, and he'd love to hear of their wedding and the songs downloaded. He was very upset after her fight with Quill, never wanting Tinsel to leave him. He also wished he'd visit Green Plant and see the diverse plants and wildlife there. A lot of times, Groot's sacrifice by Ronan has been brought up, as they also related the deaths to Yondu and Falcon; while also relate Thanos and Ronan to Black Shadow and Deathborn.

He later reunited with Rick and Tinsel, and they were amazed on how much he'd grown over a brief time. At the Milano, Rocket translated that he wishes to visit Planet Tortiz 3, specifically Green Plant, so hopefully he'd find more of his species. He grew concerned as Gamora was discussing with the group on lost species over the course of over 500 years via black hole. Groot and his comrades wound up at Planet Berhert while Star-Lord was desperate to find Gamora after the Infinity War. They did, with most of her memories lost, till Mantis helped restore them. As he and Rocket may settle in Port Town, because of its large diversity as an advanced space harbor, he wishes to visit Green Plant as well as taking a break from bounty-hunting.

It can be implied that events from Guardians Vol. 3 took place before the team went thru the black hole; Groot never left the team and forged his own with Rocket, as he stayed until he was able to take breaks in Port Town and Green Plant.
