Biography[]

Birth & Ancestry[]

Inéz Ortega Castillo Black was born on October 31, 2021, in Forks, Washington. Her mother, Isabella Ortega Castillo-Esfahani, has a diverse cultural background—predominantly Tejano (Texan Mexican and Mayan) and Californio (Californian Mexican and Spanish) from her maternal grandmother, and Iranian Jewish heritage from her maternal grandfather. Her father, Joseph Black, has Native American ancestry. Inéz never had the chance to know her father or her brother. Shortly after her birth, her parents separated, with each taking one child with them. Isabel and Joseph made this decision to protect Inéz and her brother Brandon from Philippe and Sophie, Isabella's older siblings from a previous troubled marriage. When they learned that Isabella had given birth to Joseph's son, they were displeased. They disapproved of Isabella marrying Joseph, believing he was beneath her. Sophie cunningly slipped Isabel a substance that affected her fertility, aiming to prevent her from having more children with Joseph. After a year, Isabel discovered what her half-siblings had done and confronted them. They claimed they would stop if she left Joseph and their son, but she refused to comply. Seeking a solution, Isabel consulted Joseph's great-grandmother, who recommended an ancient fertility diet. This required her to consume a herbal tonic that contained a narcotic intended to enhance mental awareness. This, along with the couple's genetic compatibility, resulted in Inéz's birth with an advanced adult-like mentality.

Family History & Upbringing[]

After the split, Inéz and her mother moved to Los Angeles to live with their relatives, the Ortega-Castillo Esfahani family. This family had been living in Los Angeles since 1982, having escaped from Iran after spending a year there following the Iranian Revolution of 1979. After leaving Iran, they fled to Israel before finally settling in America. In Los Angeles, Diego Ortega-Castillo Esfahani met Juana Ortega in 1986. Juana, originally from San Antonio, Texas, was helped by Diego to get back on her feet after she fought hard to secure an annulment of her illegal marriage to Michal Cortez. Eventually, they fell in love, got married, and had eight children, of whom Isabel was the youngest.

Years later, when Isabel was eleven, her family faced ongoing challenges. Michal Cortez, Juana’s ex-husband, along with their son and daughter, Philippe and his children—Claude, Vicki, Lilia, and Summer, and Sophie—moved to a villa outside Los Angeles. They had located Juana with the help of a private investigator and brought along their circle of friends and family. Michael, Philippe, and Sophie encouraged them to harass and bully the Ortega-Castillo Esfahani family, their visiting relatives, and their community. Despite these difficulties, the Ortega-Castillo Esfahani family remained committed to teaching the younger generation the difference between right and wrong, instilling in them the belief that they could achieve anything they set their minds to and raised them under Catholic and Jewish principles. When Isabel raised Inéz and helped care for her siblings' children, she often taught them martial arts, particularly Karate and Jeet Kune Do, and frequently asked her karate teachers to assist. This helped the children develop discipline, honor, and self-defense skills. The family also emphasized the importance of taking pride in their cultural heritage. For dinner, they shared a variety of dishes, including enchiladas, paella, sabzi polo with stuffed pigeon on the side, kugel, cioppino, and fettuccine alfredo with chicken and shrimp. On weekends, Inéz and her family spent time at community centers in El Mercado and Tehrangeles.

As mentioned before, Inéz's unimaginable smarts came from a unique mix of her parents' genes plus her mom's herbal tonic, which was like a mental booster. Because of this, she actually woke to consciousness even before she was born! When she was born, she had all of the memories from her ancestors, though she had limited access to the memories from her dad's side. This incredible background made her wise beyond her years, leaving her family amazed. By the age of three, she had already gone through every book in the local library, multiple times. She could easily recite poems by Poe, Byron, and Shakespeare by heart and could speak in a bunch of different languages, both ancient and modern. Her half-uncle, Philippe, was impressed and offered to enroll her in the Miriam School, a private school for intellectually gifted kids in Bel-Air, Los Angeles. This caught everyone off guard and raised some eyebrows, with Inéz and her family worrying that Philippe might have some hidden agenda as he had sought control over them as did Sofie, who greatly disapproved to the idea because she looked down on her and her family because of their multi-ethnicity. To add insult to injury, Philippe’s children, Inéz’s older half-cousins—JC, Vicki, and Lila—bullied Inéz, her family and friends for as long as she could remember through teasing, name-calling, threats, and exclusion due to seeing them and their family as inferior. Inéz felt the most pain from the bullying, frequently being called a freak. Even though she put on a brave face to handle their bullying, she had to quietly deal with the hurt that stayed inside her.

School & Friendship[]

Inéz flourished during her years at Miriam, establishing herself as an exceptional student known for her remarkable talent and dedication. Her academic journey was characterized by rapid progress, as she consistently outperformed her peers and embraced challenges with enthusiasm. Her teachers were continually impressed by her keen intellect and her uncanny ability to understand advanced academic subjects. She would often be seen reading in the library and would invite her peers to read with her, which allowed her to make friends, especially with Diana Beok and Esperanza Diaz. During a parent-teacher conference, Her teachers and the school principal approached her and her mother with exciting news: with personalized educational support, Inéz had the potential to start college well ahead of her peers. However, despite the allure of an accelerated path, Inéz chose to embrace a typical educational journey, valuing the shared experiences and friendships that came with a more conventional classroom setting.

When Inéz was 10 years old, she went on a summer trip to Northern California with her mother. They visited Napa Valley and the nearby Wine Country to learn how wine is made and taste local varieties. They explored Gold Country and learned about the California Gold Rush. The trip provided stunning views of the High Sierras and included visits to Yosemite, Sequoia, and Kings Canyon National Parks, along with Lake Tahoe. One special stop was the peaceful Carmel Mission, where they spent an hour in the chapel, surrounded by candlelight and the smell of aged wood. In this calm place, they prayed and found comfort in the rich history around them. In San Francisco, they toured the Museum of Modern Art, the Ferry Building, and Chinatown, where they bought herbs and enjoyed tasty Chinese food. They also visited Alcatraz Island, Fisherman’s Wharf, and the North Beach area, where they had fresh seafood. Other highlights included the Palace of Fine Arts, the Haas-Lilienthal House, Alamo Square, the Golden Gate Park, and Angel Island.

During her time in San Francisco, Inez met Juliana Nicks and Valerie Kang while she and her mother were walking through the Haight-Ashbury and Mission districts, shopping in one of the trendy boutiques. The three girls formed an instant connection, bonding over their shared passions for reading and art. They often gathered in their favorite spots around the city, surrounded by vibrant street art and the sounds of local musicians playing nearby. As they explored the creative murals and enjoyed live performances, they exchanged recommendations for their favorite books and discussed the artists who inspired them. Their laughter and lively conversations flowed effortlessly, deepening their friendship. Juliana is outgoing, inspirational, adventurous, and at times stubborn, while Valerie is friendly, honest, confident, and level-headed, though she can also be temperamental.
