Kain Highwind is a playable character in Final Fantasy IV and Final Fantasy IV: The After Years. He is a Dragoon from the kingdom of Baron, Cecil Harvey's childhood friend and adoptive older brother. He has feelings for Cecil's beloved Rosa Joanna Farrell, but he hides them, so they do not hinder his relationship with either of the two: Rosa in turn has feelings for Cecil.
Kain Highwind is a warrior of Cosmos and one of the new characters introduced in Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy. He is the third representative of Final Fantasy IV. He was a Dragoon who served alongside his best friend, Cecil, in Baron, until Golbez took control of him and used him to attack his friend and obtain the crystals. In time, Kain resisted Golbez's control and redeemed himself. He specializes in high-speed aerial combat, fighting with his lance and Jump, along with a variety of other Dragoon abilities and Wind spells.
In the game's story mode, his main rival is Exdeath.

Body of Dark, Heart of Light[]
Kain was first seen at the Lunar Subterrane with Yuna pondering on Cosmos noting a new warrior and who it's gonna be. Till Kuja's evil essence interrupted his reverie. He and Yuna spied on the bard and also found a Dark Knight. He informed the summoner a Dark Knight loses his vitality as it draws on its Darkness ability, so he decided to face him off with Yuna as his assistant. He was easily the victor, even when he did his ultimate Jump as a Holy Dragoon! It was enough to weaken Cecil, but he was not out. Yuna halted him as she told him he needs friends to support his angsts instead of using it for evil. Kain asked for his name, it was Cecil, just like his old friend! He was then desperate to bring him to Order's Sanctuary. With Yuna's help, he escorted him to the "goddess" and he became one of her official warriors!
Later on, he, Firion and Yuna spotted Cecil at the Crystal World, enhancing his darkness upon Kuja's influence and his Dark Crystal! He was hesitant to stop him, but Firion tried and failed to do so. He was helpless trying to revive him after Cecil sapped his soul! He demanded Cecil to return his essence before he should fade, and since a Paladin was the opposition of a Dark Knight, he can give it back! He did just that and Firion was restored! He, Yuna and Kain were impressed that Cecil still had a heart of light!
Trials of a King/Conquest of the Blue Planet[]
He was first seen at the summit of Mt. Ordeals and reunited with Cecil just before he was ready to attain the light like the Paladin did. He offered Kain to re-attain it together, as he had his mind corrupted by Dameon and the Injukhal. Knowing his predicament, Kain volunteered to face their darkness together and take out the savages. But...Cecil was being manipulated by the drums and turned against Kain for all his treachery! He was a decent combatant as he tried to talk some sense into him! Suddenly, he evaded a dark volley which hit the sacred altar and began a cataclysm! Kain offered to save Cecil, despite his beggings for him to take his place as King and protect Rosa. Kain refused such blasphemy, but as Cecil willingly let go of the precipice, Kain immediately dove in and evaded the debris with ease as he took him to Mysidia!
Hours later, Cecil finally woke up, and Kain kept on telling him he needed to stay his position since he seemed more competent than the Dragoon. Cecil kept on pitying himself, and Kain stated he'll be at the summit again if he should change his mind.
In the second story, Kain traveled to Baron and reunited with his fellow Dragoons and even Yang! The Monk informed the world's in peril as the Injukhal became stronger and Rosa was unwell from the delivery; they must get the Glamour Greens at the savages' own turf! They first took an airship to the possible locations of invasion: Damcyan, Troia and Eblan. They traversed thru the desert, only for the Monks and Dragoons to succumb to the drums! Kain dove after them and knocked them out seamlessly! Then, after Yang dove to the dunes, he aided his fight! Unfortunately, the enemies took the Fire Crystal and fled to Troia!
They chased after them, only to have Troia invaded, brainwashed the Epopts and stole the Earth Crystal! Lastly, they headed to Eblan, only to have Edge, his four remaining benevolent ninjas and the Seneschal down! He assisted the fallen and defeated several Injukhal and condors, but thanks to the brainwashed ninjas, they fled to Tenebre via Smokescreen! Kain and Yang developed the Fleet of Hope as they recruited Edge and his team, as well as Rydia and her Eidolons!

The airship crashlanded thanks to the dark vibrations by Domin and his men, and Kain took on the war effort! He soon joined Cecil as he was paralyzed and weakened by his Exhaust, ambushing him from above! Kain and Cecil teamed up to take down Deimos, even as Kain was distracting him while Cecil and Rosa conjured Holy! They were successful, and Kain was astonished Golbez, via his Eidolon, finished the job! Kain then headed to Baron and watched the birth from afar, little Ceodore was born minutes later!
Dissidia Shadowgate[]
Kain fell during the 12th cycle as he and several other heroes sealed the Rift. They wound up at Stormhaven and were waiting for Cosmos' last warriors to show up! They soon did, and he reunited with Cecil and Firion! He was enlisted with his final mission and infiltrate the dreaded castle, Shadowgate! He was a good middleman and foot soldier, especially when he needed to take other fighters across the large gap where the bridge was thrown down by the troll and when he was destroyed by Bartz and Cecil. He was able to assist Firion, Cloud and Luneth take out a fierce wyvern and found the talisman which was one of the keys unlocking the warlock's lair.
Later on, he helped Cloud. Cecil and Tifa get rid of a female Lobo, disguised as a dancing enchantress, as well as her duplicates. He soon retrieved his deeper past memories. Though he was unsuccessful on taking the Behemoth down, till Firion finished the job. Kain and Cecil then returned to the Blue Planet and reunited with Rosa, Cid and Ceodore at Baron!
