City of Kuatan

The city of Kuatan in the MK4 Comics

The ancient city of Kuatan is a subterranean kingdom located in the Realm of Outworld and it is home to the mighty, four-armed half Human, half Dragon people known as the Shokan.

Their civilization and society is structured under a monarchy with a king and queen ruling their people with their heir usually being a prince in line for the throne. In the non-canon Mortal Kombat: The Journey Begins, it's shown that multiple heirs to the throne must compete with one another and demonstrate their ruthlessness by fighting to the death. The victor thus becomes the ruling crown-prince who will eventually inherit the throne. Furthermore, on a single, particular day each year, it was customary to give the King a present.

Among the Shokan, there is one law that surpasses above all others: survival of the fittest and most ruthless.

Within this land lies the Kuatan Palace on a nearby plateau, complete with the huge statue of Prince Goro in the courtyard, and it is where a long line of great, ancient Shokan sovereigns that resided and ruled the kingdom from there. Prince Goro is next in line as the new heir to the throne and leader of his people.

As of Mortal Kombat 11, Sheeva is its queen.

Ikran's MK Khronology[]

Just like in the MK4 comics, particularly the prequel comic, this epic introduces this city as a quarreling ground between the Shokan and Centaurs. Kitana breaks off the feud that their lands shall be the way they were before Kahn's takeover and she and Sindel object all of Kahn's customs and rules. But it wasn't until Goro made a surprise arrival and settled the score demanding he'll rip anyone apart if they don't by the new rules. He also protected Kitana as Kuatan received the aftershocks and the display when the Edenian Palace was being invaded by Shinnok and his generals.

After the victory, Kitana went back to Kuatan with a couple Edenians and reunited with Goro and resumed the signing of the peace treaty which was interrupted earlier. Kung Lao made a sneak attack with his hat onto the prince, and he dreaded that working with the enemy was a lost cause. Before Goro challenged him, Lao stated it was a ceremonial strike for his ancestor and he wished to make things even by putting aside his differences. Goro was actually admired by him, despite being his spitting image, on being a noble warrior and he wished to do the same if he'd won. They shook hands and the offer was successful.

It wasn't seen much after that despite having the outer Kuatan Jungle where the ancient Outworld gateway was located. And the Shokan moved to the Edenian Palace when they became part of the Resistance. Some may have even relocated to Australia for a fresh start. Nevertheless, Kuatan still stands proudly as a Shokan settlement.
