The Metroids (メトロイド, Metoroido) are a fictional alien organism and antagonists in the Metroid video game series. A floating, jellyfish-like organism with quadripartite nuclei, it is capable of siphoning an undetectable life energy from any life form, generally causing the death of the victim in the process. This energy can also be extracted from the Metroid in turn, allowing it to be used as a living power source.
Though Metroids are often described as parasites, their nature of immediately devouring all lifeforms more closely resembles that of a predator.
The ReBoot Multiuniverse[]
They've been mentioned by Samus earlier on, but mainly her mission on retrieving the baby Metroid from Ridley after she took in Bob while being shot into the Web, then alerting her that the Ceres space station was under attack! It was captured by Ridley and taken to Planet Zebes, along with Bob and most of Akari's Pokémon.
It was missing after she defeated Ridley, though they saved some docile Web Creatures. It was eventually found sucking energy out of multiple monsters, even nearly all of Samus' energy till it recognized her. It helped her again during the final fight with Mother Brain at Tourian, then sacrificed itself as it had the ability to give Samus energy from the monster's paralysis. And its shed essence gifted her with an ultra-powerful Beam which obliterated Mother Brain!
Ikran's F-Zero timeline[]
There was a jellyfish-like alien as Rick was searching for Tinsel in Dark Star. He came across a large tank with the organism floating in it. He decided to mash around the buttons to free it, and it soared away. It returned the favor while the Core was exploding and saved Rick in the Dragon Bird EX! It helped it descend to a nearby meteorite where the Task Force was, before soaring away again.
It was stated that the Metroids were a dying race, ever since their home worlds and species were destroyed. But it's been implied they were cloned in order to revive their species with their DNA.
Trivia[]
- Ikran always thought the Metroids were the inspiration for the Web Riders/Creatures from ReBoot, one of several elements that were inspired sharing the two series. So too of how territorial and volatile they are even as life drainers and aliens, even when the Space Federation persecuted them just as the Guardians did to the Web Creatures.
