Onaga, the Dragon King, is a character in the Mortal Kombat fighting game series. He made his debut in Mortal Kombat: Deception, in which he also served as the main antagonist and final boss. He then returned as a major antagonist and became playable in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon.

Onaga was introduced in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance under the cryptic name of the "Dragon King", the long-dead ruler of Outworld preceding Shao Kahn. Not much was known about him, except for the fact that his army was deemed undefeatable but, at his untimely death, allowed itself to be mummified and kept in an ancient tomb that remained undiscovered until the necromancer Quan Chi stumbled upon it. Onaga is one of the series' characters through which the One Being is said to work through. His most important powers include superhuman strength, resistance to all forms of magic, and the innate power to raise the dead.

Mortal Kombat: Vengeance[]

Onaga was mentioned several times in the story. Raiden was the first addressing him as the dreaded Dragon King to which the Deadly Alliance would resurrect by collecting souls, though their goals were at a drag since they were unable to attain Liu's soul. Lao asked Sindel what the deal with Onaga was, and she explained he was the ruler of Outworld before Shao Kahn. Kahn became his advisor, but due to him being power hungry, he grew irritated serving him, though they were unchallenged working together back in 8450 BC. Eventually, Kahn planned an insurrection poisoning and killing Onaga and sent out his generals to decimate the mummified army. He became the supreme ruler ever since, then he began his conquest taking other realms with Edenia being the first.

Onaga was mentioned that his tomb and those of his undead followers were at first stationed in the Lost Tomb, smack dab in the Sarna Ruins. But after the futuristic Baraka mentioned there was a mysterious egg incubating in the Lava Shrine, the maul of the dormant volcano, Kitana came to the conclusion that the zealots must've been relocated due to the desert's unstable conditions. The Tarkatan was determined to join the heroes in order to prevent the Deadly Alliance resurrecting him and his army; he believed his close friend, Reptile, may be sacrificed as his newer vessel!

Quan confirmed of Onaga's second coming before his apparent death to Raiden and Fujin. Sure enough, the mummified remains, courtesy of the Alliance's souls they collected, had reanimated them to worship their master's reincarnation... The long-awaited prophecy had been realized as Onaga roared for his freedom!!

Mortal Kombat: The Return of the Dragon King[]

At Shang Tsung's Palace, Raiden and Fujin were taking in a brief, quiet respite. Before Raiden was the first who beheld the presence of Onaga! Even though they'd been weakened in Outworld, the God brothers were still fighting against the monstrosity! Lao then took on the offensive first as soon as he and several other Kombatants ran thru a portal leading there. Lao's hat was a quick distraction while his hat chipped his right shoulder! Onaga mopped the floor with him seamlessly, even only being blinded by Liu's fiery spirit shaped like a dragon. He was about to strangle it until Lao summoned the dragon spirit back into the amulet before it was decimated. Sonya, Jax, Johnny, Kitana and Nightwolf got involved and needless to say, their efforts were futile. Raiden was too weak from the scrimmage. All he did was make a desperate attempt in an incantation, conjuring lightning into himself! Fujin knew what was coming and before the fighters knew it, they were each caught in the explosion decimating the Palace and Onaga's undead army. However, the impact only left a scratch! From the rubble he picked up Shinnok's Amulet and roared in triumph before he began his Konquest!

Sindel recollected Kahn's imperialistic rule to Kung Lao and Hanzo. Kahn used to be Onaga's most trusted advisor and bodyguard, until he grew weary and became obsessed with ruling Outworld. Despite having the same goals on merging all realms, much like the One Being, the mighty Kombatant challenged his lively extermination squads against Onaga's undead army, which was rumored to be unstoppable. Fortunately, since he was cunning enough to poison the Dragon King, he was able to take Outworld, and soon Edenia, for himself.

In the present, however, Onaga was still very much alive and admired his new pawns, Sonya and Jax, even when they and his Tarkatan forces invaded the Sun Do village despite not having answers on the last Kamidogu. He then had reinforcements from Hotaru and his Seido soldiers and Sonya and Jax informed the amulet's located in the Temple of Elements at Earthrealm, courtesy of Johnny's hive mind. As soon as they pinpoint the coordinates, they'll contact him, but until then, he'd suspect the Edenians shall have the whereabouts. He also mentioned that thanks to Tanya and the undead Kitana, he was able to receive the incantations to combine all the Kamidogu into the ultimate weapon.

Kung Lao saw Onaga via flashback after he held the Earthrealm Kamidogu; in the Nexus, he greeted Shujinko who was bewildered the Kamidogu didn't teleport to the Elder Gods. He even played him the fool, as Damashi doesn't exist and only functioned as an astral puppet for his schemes. He noticed the amulet's in Outworld, held by Quan Chi, even though it was later a fake. He was about to slay Shujinko, though he had a change of plans as he escaped into Earthrealm. Moments later, Liu gave Lao a heads up, and it was indeed Onaga demanding the Earthrealm Kamidogu; Lao confronted him stating he shalln't rule all realms. He then chased Lao after he was blinded by Liu's fiery spirit, releasing him and chasing him from realm to realm!

He bashed thru the Chaosrealm, Orderrealm's denizens worshipped him, and he wrecked the forest of Outworld. He was soon able to clip Lao wounding him as he reached the Nexus. He was at the dragon's mercy until Goro made several Shokan Jumps onto him. Onaga quickly recovered and confronted them, Liu's spirit, Havik, Hanzo and Ermac, each Kombatant closing in with their strongest maneuvers. Goro seemed to imitate Onaga's jumps, fireballs, and brute strength, although Liu gave them the strategy to destroy the Kamidogu. It only halted Onaga for a brief moment and vulnerable to attack! With his power source gone, Liu urged Lao to perform his Razor's Edge and conjured a F4 Tornado! Each fighter backed him to the funnel until he was caught! He still stammered onto his feet, although his soul was oozing out of his vessel, Reptile! Soon, Nightwolf was able to bind him into the Netherrealm, courtesy of his ancestors' impure spirits. Onaga cursed in Damashi's voice before Nightwolf was escorted by Ashrah.

Final Kombat[]

Onaga was seen conspiring with Shang, Quan and Kahn inside the latter's throne room within his fortress. Quan desired for the overlords to cooperate against their enemies during the battle of Armageddon and claim the prize of Blaze's flames. Both Onaga and Shang were difficult to deal with, refusing to function as one unit. He was even disgusted over them never addressing him as Emperor, even though he isn't. Kahn, however, took in Quan's words to rule and destroy all realms after decimating Blaze and the Kombatants. He led the charge to the portal leading to Edenia until Kahn and Shang sensed the souls of the two intruders, Taven and Hanzo. Unfortunately, they were able to escape.

Onaga was seen in a vision as the mysterious Oriental envisioned him as he sped up time. He followed Blaze back from the time he met Kitana back to the Lava Shrine. He entered the portal and concentrated on seeing that same incident. Blaze was stuck in the lava guarding the dragon egg till it hatched and shot a beam of light into Reptile! The Saurian transformed as he was being possessed by the baby dragon while still being resurrected when Shujinko reunited the Kamidogu!

Onaga was still stalking the skies looking for some unsuspecting prey. Although his only prey was his former advisor who betrayed him, Shao Kahn. Fire God Liu Kang noticed Onaga and struck him down with his electrokinesis and tossed him down to his maker! They tore each other apart before they both were consumed and became nonexistent from Blaze's flames.
