Edenians and Outworlders

Edenia and Outworld forever merged in Sindel's MK9 ending

Outworld is one of the six main realms in the Mortal Kombat series of fighting games.

About Outworld[]

Outworld's known history goes back millions of years and points at Onaga the Dragon King as its first known ruler. Although he would eventually be supplanted by Shao Kahn, they both shared the same vision: expanding Outworld by taking other realms by force. Unwittingly, both were being controlled by echoes of the One Being. Partially as a result of the despotism both emperors displayed, Outworld is in a constant state of turmoil, albeit more so under Shao Kahn than under Onaga.

Outworld is a large and often hostile realm of varying landscapes, owing to its nature as a composite realm encompassing an unknown amount of conquered and merged realms. Its primary landscapes appear to consist of barren wastelands, vast deserts, molten caverns, pools of acid, dense forests with animated faces, sinister temples and shrines, and high mysterious mountain peaks. Outworld boasts many powerful, fearsome races and deadly monsters. Small villages can be found scattered throughout the landscape and, much like Edenia, the realm teems with magic. However, aside from the cities of Lei Chen and Z'Unkahrah, no real metropolises have been seen in the series. Based on the few cities and villages that have been seen, both the architecture and material culture of Outworld bear strong similarities to East Asian and Middle Eastern cultures.

Outworld also houses a brewery, specializing in 'Outworld Wine', a favorite of master Bo' Rai Cho. It's often rumored amongst many Outworld inhabitants that Earthrealm's rice wine 'puts Outworld Wine to shame'. Commuters also ride the Dragonfly, which is said to be the fastest form of transportation across the vast expanses of Outworld, aside from sorcery and actual dragons. There are many of these flying transports, each with its own set of destinations.

Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks, Part II[]

Outworld was under an intense scrimmage as Kitana made a failed insurrection to take Kahn's throne. One of Jerrod's knights, Asgaarth, helped the princess lead the rebellion and ally with the Shokan. Unfortunately, Shang Tsung posed as Sheeva and functioned as the mole alerting Motaro of their plot. Raiden found out of his schemes, and so he sent the Centaur and Tarkan warriors against Tsung's revenge on taking the throne for himself. Shao Kahn escaped with a pair of Shadow Priests, and there was a brutal slaughter between the two factions.

Three months later, there was stragglers led by Komodai and the Saurian army, remainders of Reptile's army. Though they were killed by Kung Lao before they retreated. Later on, Kitana offered for Liu Kang to investigate since Stryker never found any activity since the incident. By the time the Edenian and Champion reached it, they beheld so many dead carcasses of Tarkans, Shokan, and Centaurs left by the failed insurrection. They also saw Kano struggling to walk away, until the three of them became paralyzed and frozen when it began to seep into Earthrealm. The trio became separated within the merging realm afterwards.

By the time Liu Kang emerged victorious against Kahn at the Pit III, Outworld, along with Earthrealm, was restored. Although, Sindel as the benevolent Queen restored her throne, refused to extend to its boundaries, and rather restore the ruins of Edenia; as being in that corrupt, dead realm would reveal dark memories of her unwillingly serving the Emperor.

Shinnok's Uprising[]

Kuatan was visited twice during the story. The first time was when Kitana was breaking an offering from Edenia to the Shokan and Centaurs on giving equal land to each other, while also having her and Sindel abide by their own rules and not Kahn's. The two races went into violent bickering until Goro unexpectedly shown up! He demanded to go by this new treaty otherwise he'd tear people a new one. This made both the Shokan and Centaurs accept the agreement while also put aside their differences. Kitana's offering went well, until Edenia was invaded.

The second time was when Kitana resumed the peace talks at the Kuatan Palace where two Edenians accompanied her. Goro accepted to sign the agrrement as long as the Centaurs abide by the treaty. There was a brief victory until Kung Lao made a sneak attack onto the Shokan. He stated that making an agreement with the enemy was a lost cause. Before Goro challenged him, Lao admitted that was only a ceremonial strike for his ancestor who was killed by Goro ages ago. Goro asked if Lao wished to continue the battle, but to only set aside their differences between them. From him as his spitting image, Goro eventually admired him and his ancestor, as a brave and noble warrior. If he would've won, it may be his own son to make peace with him. Lao and Goro shook hands, and the treaty was successful.

Mortal Kombat: Vengeance[]

Outworld was soon breached by the Kombatants after they used the Celestial Portal. They landed into the Living Forest where they reunited with Jax who'd been stranded there over the last few days. He lost contact with the Special Forces, just as Sonya did with the OIA; they believed Hsu Hao and the Red Dragons were responsible. She also found Cyrax's missing arm console, and Jax mentioned he could've sworn he saw him via goldenrod glimmer, before some large bat dropped and swooped him away. Aiko noticed a ruffle behind her, but she and Kung Lao didn't see anything; Liu actually warned him the forest was too quiet and vacant. The heroes were relieved once they'd reached the Edenian Palace.

A day later, the heroes embarked on their mission. After Jax questioned where they should go, Kung Lao suggested Nightwolf to sense the source of the Deadly Alliance's auras, which pointed him to northwest. The team went underway, with Kitana and Jade joining them. Onis interfered the journey as did a drunken stupor known as Bo' Rai Cho encountered by Lao. They soon went their separate ways after Lao and Liu taught the big oaf some manners, before they made camp while Lao was deep in shame. They then made it inside Onaga's Lost Tomb in which they cleared out the sarcophaguses. Moloch and Drahmin caught up to them, with the former's three turquoise eyes traced them. The Onis fell, though Raiden once said they escaped to Outworld from the Netherrealm, while Quan and Shang escaped to a different location; the pair said they were betrayed by the Oni though they refused to assist the team. Jade then dreaded by following the auras of the sorcerers, they'd be heading thru the Sarna Ruins, the dangerous next-door neighbor of Jade's Desert.

The heroes traversed thru the Ruins where they spotted a lone cyclone. Kung Lao was able to dissipate it from the inside, and Kenshi was impressed upon his foolish efforts. The team reunited with the missing scout, before Aiko heard distant, enticing drums... The team chased her to the Drum Arena, ruled by the Makeba tribe! Kenshi was searching for the secret airship, the Dragonfly, before he infiltrated the village and broke off Aiko's thrall. The heroes escaped as they climbed aboard, and Sonya spotted the goldenrod glimmer belonging to Cyrax! The team followed him to the Lava Shrine beneath the active volcano. Nitara escorted the bot back to Earthrealm after he was weakened while finding the orb binding her realm; Vaeternus was permanently separated as she shattered the orb! Baraka and Bo' were stowaways to the Dragonfly, while the latter taught Aiko, Kung Lao, and Nightwolf new techniques! The ship was shot down by the Red Dragons, yet the team was lucky to decimate the two Onis! They soon infiltrated Shang's Palace, dealt with the Tarkatan army, and the Red Dragons were decimated! They rested in the Tarkatan War Kamp before Lao and Fujin shut down the Soulnado! Raiden and Fujin were slightly more powerful due to their Elder God status, yet it wasn't enough for the Deadly Alliance. Lao and Nightwolf, with Liu's merged soul, defeated them and Outworld had been liberated with the Sun Do villagers escorted by Bo'! They took the Nethership back to Earthrealm afterwards.

Raiden and Fujin stayed behind to survey the ruins of Shang's Palace; they weren't certain what would become of Outworld... They were appalled as the dying Quan revealed all their efforts were for naught as he and Shang had everything they needed to resurrect Onaga and his loyal, unstoppable army! To prove it, the mummified remains were reanimated and soon after Quan died, Onaga was unveiled!

Mortal Kombat: The Return of the Dragon King[]

Raiden and Fujin were rattled by the sorcerer's words as well as the resurrection of Onaga and his mummified followers. They struck the beast, but their attacks were worthless. Several Kombatants (konsisiting of Kung Lao, Sonya, Jax, Kitana, Johnny and Nightwolf) ran to their aid, and not even their help did any favors, not even Lao's advanced techniques nor Liu's fiery Dragon! Onaga nearly bested everyone in battle, until Raiden made a desperate move channeling lightning into him before he self-destructed! The explosion obliterated the Palace, the undead soldiers, and nearly all the heroes, and barely left a scratch on the Dragon King. He was able to attain the fake Amulet amongst the shambles.

Minutes later, Kung Lao emerged onto Outworld soil from Fujin's portal. The chilly, early wintery air went thru his body, and he relied on Liu's pyrokinesis to warm him up. He was ambushed by several Onis, though his aerosol moves gave him the advantage. He soon met up with Hanzo alive and well from the Soulnado incident, as the Elder Gods' former Champion failed to stop Shujinko from resurrecting Onaga. To rectify his mistake, he teamed up with Lao as they made their way to the Edenian Palace.

Miles away, Kenshi conjured a portal leading to Outworld from Liu's Tomb, and he and Aiko took it. At the ruins, Ermac made his ambush onto two Kombatants. He put up a fight, then there was a standoff between Ermac's soul kinesis and Kenshi's telekinesis, until the former had a strong, free hand which incapacitated Aiko! By the time her delirium made her whistle a lulling song she knew, that stopped Ermac in his tracks! He hesitated, and by the time Kenshi sliced thru Kahn's thrall chaining him, he recalled Sindel and Kitana! He then regained his true identity as King Jerrod, and he offered to give Aiko and Kenshi a lift to the Edenian Palace!

It wasn't long before the trio arrived near the Lost Tomb, where half of the Edenian guard, Sindel and Jade relocated at the crack of dawn. In it, they were ambushed by Tanya and Kitana as a revenant! The Edenians were reluctant on fighting the latter, though Jade was able to mop the floor with Tanya. Thankfully, Ermac came to their aid as he kept Kitana still then flung her to Onaga's casket, Kenshi magnified the same lulling song, and it jogged her memories of her long-lost father, who revealed his true identity! This broke off the thrall, and Liu's spirit incinerated Onaga's original vessel, preventing a chance to be resurrected in it! They planned to go to Earthrealm and protect the last Kamidogu until Kung Lao finds all the Champions!

In Sun Do, Li Mei was tending Lao for several hours. The temporal sickness made her affectionate to him, though Lao stated he was only loyal to Aiko. Eventually, the trio was ready, and Li Mei led him and Hanzo to the ancient portal in the Kuatan Jungle. They were ambushed by undead archers led by Johnny! Lao refused to fight, though Hanzo said he must settle him in kombat as words would mean nothing! Lao defeated him, Fujin blown the enemies asunder, though he drove attention. So, he evacuated Li and the wounded Cage to Earth while Lao and Hanzo escaped to the Nexus. Fujin hesitated as he saw red lightning, thinking it'd belong to his brother...

Minutes later, Sareena escorted Kuai, Smoke and Frost to the portal she used previously as she followed Quan escaping from the Netherrealm; she escaped from a lethal scrimmage against Noob Saibot while she attempted to stay away from the sorcerer. Kuai was curious on the predicament of his brother, and he offered his apprentices to stay and assist against Onaga, while also never to hesitate to fire in the first sign of trouble. While they waited for Kuai's return, they came across Nightwolf who was preparing for the lethal Sin Eater ritual.

Baraka soon warned the trio that Onaga's army was gathering; even they decimated the village of Sun Do and its denizens! He functioned as a spy amongst his clan and grew disgusted on serving a king governing the infectious undead, unlike Kahn's lively armies. It was soon made as the battleground between Onaga's army and the Edenian resistance consisting of the Edenians, Saurians, Centaurs and Shokan, even raining down on them with acid or having the living trees pierce them!

The battle raged in the Forest as soon as Smoke spewed thick layers onto the terrain before the cyborg fired a couple rockets. Kuai froze most of his assailants as Sareena and Frost were involved in close combat. The Chameleons got their hands full with the Special Forces agents, but the latter were overmatched and incapacitated by Ashrah. Baraka won over his doppelganger courtesy of his new fiery breath a certain God gifted him. Before he was injured by Hotaru. Nevertheless, Dairou and Darrius took him down viciously. As the war died down, nearly everyone was escorted and recovered at the Jinsei Chamber, excepting Baraka who was being tended by Kuai; the cryomancer was offered a portal to head for home. It's likely that Zaterra restored its way of living and Baraka may be the few mutants left...

Final Kombat[]

Taven arrived at Outworld and knew where he was on account of the iron-wrought statue of Shao Kahn greeting him. He was on his way to follow Daegon there, according to Orin who'd been watching over with Caro and the Oriental at Yin Yang Island. He unlocked the main chamber by activating the levers in the side portions of the Fortress and came across several of his generals such as Mileena, Motaro the Minotaur, a Kahn mecha, and Reiko. Hanzo assisted him up after he stopped Taven from saving Shujinko since he was responsible for resurrecting Onaga and causing destruction to all realms. They soon eavesdropped on Kahn, Onaga, Quan and Shang within the throne room discussing on making an alliance on claiming Blaze's flames as a prize for destruction while also overwhelming the gathering heroes. Due to Shang sensing their souls, Hanzo and Taven escaped as they chased them; thanks to Caro's portal and Taven's warp ability, they weren't caught.

Several years after the Battle of Armageddon, Sonya piloted the Black Hawk to the new Special Forces' destination. They landed near what used to be Kahn's Koliseum only there was a neo-Kahn, Kotal, who stood up from his perch in what was once Kahn's Arena. He led the charge consisting of several menacing warriors against the heroes as they charged in for another fierce tournament.

Trivia[]

  • Crocodile Isle from Diddy's Kong Conquest may have been the inspiration from Outworld; they each tend to have a steep and towering fortress consisting of various environments, enemies roam amok there, they serve an ironclad ruler, and a crucial incident of abduction led the heroes to infiltrate both dangerous territories.
