Paul is a character appearing in Pokémon the Series. He is the younger brother of Reggie and the main rival of Ash Ketchum from Sinnoh who received his Starter (Turtwig) in Sandgem Town from Professor Rowan and he has traveled through Kanto, Johto, and Hoenn but didn't win any of their leagues.
Unlike Ash, Paul is initially not a caring Trainer as he wants pure power from his Pokémon and the Trainers he faces to be strong. Paul is also known to release his Pokémon if he deems them weak or useless, which seems somewhat appropriate because of his ambition and seeing his Pokémon as tools for his own glory. It revealed his true goal to defeat Pyramid King Brandon.
Paul is a very careless Pokémon trainer who appears in the crossover series, Total Drama Before Time. He stated that he came to the Great Valley three weeks ago, prior to the first episode. After Topsy left after he exclaimed that Chomper was weak, Paul showed up and agreed with his suggestion. He even insulted Guido, Ducky, Littlefoot, and Petrie for standing up to Chomper, which caused a rivalry. In A New Enemy Approaches: Part 1, he thought Cera was a Rock-Type Pokémon and tried to catch her so he had another powerhouse Pokémon, only to end up with a broken Poké Ball after it hit her in the head. After this, he called her a loser. When she tried to ask where her father went, he said that he only saw him once. This was actually due to the fact that he never met Cera in Great Valley's Neighbor:Canada's Neighbor, because she was at Secret Mud Pool with Tria, Ruby, and Spike at the time. Every time Paul catches a Pokémon, he scans it using his Pokédex to see if he thinks it's powerful or not what he expects. Paul feels that Ash is a weak Trainer and can easily bring on Ash's anger by stating it. Ash's very different attitude towards being friends with Pokémon also provides much fuel to their rivalry. He makes insults on most; however, he does sometimes show some respect to others like Hyp, Mutt, and Nod. For some reason, he doesn't like Fidget, presumably because of his weird appearance and peg leg.
