Princess Ruto, also stylized as Ruto, is a recurring character in The Legend of Zelda series. She is the daughter and only child of King Zora, the ruler of the Sea Zora population residing in Hyrule and serves as the attendant of the Zoras' patron deity Lord Jabu-Jabu, preparing his meals. As a child, Ruto appears to be a tomboy and is shown to be very strong-willed and stubborn even in the face of danger, a trait she would temper and yet benefit from in her adult years when danger once again threatened her people. Though she initially shows a selfish streak in her youth, she grows to become much more benevolent in her adult years, especially after she is awakened to the knowledge that she is the Sage of Water that guards the Water Temple beneath Lake Hylia.
It is implied that Ruto's mother passed away some time before the events of Ocarina of Time, though she gave Ruto the Zora's Sapphire at some point in her youth. Ruto's mother told her that the stone serves as the so-called "Zora's Engagement Ring" by tradition and instructed her to give it to the man that would one day become her husband.

Ruto inside Jabu Jabu getting shocked by the Electric-Types cuz of her immaturity
Of course, King Zora was worried of Ruto's disappearance, and as the Royal Family's messengers, they found a bottle in Lake Hylia with a letter calling out for help. They showed it to her dad and caught a fresh fish just to let Jabu-Jabu suck them inside! They eventually met up with Ruto who scolded them on getting her and denying anything involving the letter, even lying she used to be inside while she was little, though she warned the duo the deity's been growing green around the gills and the monsters around. She fell thru a hole, and whenever they should meet up with her, she chastised them on leaving her, so much so that even Pikachu and Elekid would get fed up and shock her for her saucy, immature mouth, even when they had to carry her! Zelda II even blurted out she should be more grateful that they're helping her for her own survival! Eventually, they found the Zora's Sapphire, the ring she was looking for, and went to it first, then got scared by a Big Octo to which it gave Link and Zelda II's Pokémon close to fainting.
Later on, they met up with Princess Ruto who yelled at them after they barely managed to get rid of the Barinade, thanks to the Grass and Electric-Types. They got out, but Ruto scared Link and backed him away, causing him to fall into the sea. Ruto then gave him the Zora's Sapphire, which to him, he didn't know what an engagement ring was.

Ruto with Dewgong, Gyarados, and Articuno
Seven years later, the duo met up with Ruto inside the Water Temple, and she remembered that Link should marry her considering he had the Sapphire, much to his dismay. Before Zelda II was about to explain why they needed it, she abruptly said she needed their help to save the Zoras, destroy the monster that made the curse, and when playing Zelda's Lullaby, it can raise and lower the water levels. After Morpha was annihilated, they met Ruto inside the Chamber of Sages, and again she wished to marry Link, though Zelda II blurted out they needed the Sapphire to attain the Master Sword and save Hyrule, and she doubted that humans and Zoras were compatible. She reluctantly gave her 3 Pokémon guardians: Gyarados, Articuno, and Dewgong. She gave them the Water Medallion and waited till she assisted the Sages to seal Ganondorf away.
The Lost Legend of Namira[]
She was one of the Sages that watched over Link as he and Zelda II confronted Namira, and she too accepted she should find another Zora as a mate and got the Sapphire back.
Coronation and Dreams[]
Ruto, thanks to Queen Zelda, became one of the Pokémon elitists and had permission to use all of Zelda II's Ice and Water-Types.
