Quan Chi is the most powerful sorcerer and necromancer in the Netherrealm and a primary villain in the Mortal Kombat series. Quan Chi combines both dark magic and cunning in his never-ending plots to overtake not only Earthrealm, but all of reality. He is notable in particular for his high intelligence and cold, calculating pragmatism, as well as his penchant for manipulating and exploiting vulnerable targets to further his own agenda. His actions have earned him many enemies, especially Sub-Zero and Scorpion.

Only Shinnok, Shao Kahn, Shang Tsung and Delia can match Quan Chi's skills as a sorcerer.

A new version of Quan Chi appears in Mortal Kombat 1 as an antagonist in the game's Story Mode as well as being the second playable character via DLC as part of the Kombat Pack. In the New Era, Quan Chi initially led a meaningless life in the mines due to Liu Kang's alterations to keep certain dangerous villains away from power. When his associates planned to strike, he ratted them out to raise his own station. At some point, he is contacted by "Damashi", who helps him learn his sorcerer abilities, eventually becoming a powerful demon sorcerer of the Netherrealm, founding a Sisterhood of Shadow to do his bidding and eventually allying himself with the like-minded Shang Tsung.

Ikran's MK Khronology[]

Of course, he began as a gifted, omnipotent Oni from the Netherrealm and Shinnok's partner, even helping him rule over Lucifer to have the dark Elder God rule over the underworld. For eons, he soon wanted to break away from Shinnok and govern his own ends, thus he assisted Kahn on indirectly harming the reigning Champion, the Great Kung Lao. He then met up with Shang who became volatile business rivals approving the Emperor. By the time Lao was beaten by Goro, Kahn restored faith onto Shang, then Quan retreated in defeat.

Centuries later, he slipped into Earthrealm and recruited both Bi-Han and Hanzo to look for Shinnok's Amulet; he admired the Lin Kuei assassin after he retrieved the map of the Temple of Elements which was guarded by the Shaolin monks, then held by Hanzo. He had Bi-Han incapacitate each of the elemental gods, only for Quan to slip in and steal the Amulet for himself. He then had Sareena and the Brotherhood of Shadow hunt Bi-Han down after Raiden sent him to the Netherrealm to retrieve it. Thus, while Shinnok was distracted, he switched the legit amulet with his duplicate forged by his own black arts. By the time Shao Kahn fell against Liu and Lao, he used the real amulet to resurrect him for the upcoming invasion; it was sort of a package deal since Outworld has close ties to the Netherrealm aside from the Tarkatans, Outworlders mutated with demon DNA.

About a month later, Quan took his pet snake with him to the Pool of Infinity, as he hatched a plan to manipulate the Earthrealm warriors on fighting against each other utilizing the Gem of Tetsurri. As an Oni, he disguised himself as an Outworld refugee exposing the heroes, then he ran off knowing the deed was done. He awaited the infected fighters to clash against each other before decimating the heart, until he dealt with Nightwolf, Kiba, and the Koopalings. He easily won over them then incapacitated the wolf and bound the shaman with his snake, until the Matokan managed to erase the hostile effects with telepathy and shattered the serpent by the time Bowser unleashed his fiery breath! Only Nightwolf broke the crystalized heart and Quan fled.

Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks, Part II[]

Quan Chi was first seen at Kahn's arena in Outworld, the same one where the Konquerer met his demise by Liu Kang and Kung Lao. He was holding up a blood-encrusted amulet at the rear of the gathering crowd and immediately disappeared before Kitana was able to suspect him.

He was also seen in flashbacks when the Kombatants first met him at the secret cave as he gained the power from the fatal gem of Tetsurri, infecting the warriors' souls making them fight each other, excepting for Nightwolf who destroyed the crystalized heart.

He was then seen in the flesh at the deserts of Earthrealm resurrecting and brainwashing Queen Sindel with assistance from Shang Tsung. It was confirmed he was the one who sealed Kahn's doomed soul upon his defeat, since the Konquerer was possessing it. Quan Chi helped him regain his lost strength during the past trimester, till he was finally well enough to rule and usurp both Earth and Outworld with an iron fist!

He was seen during Aiko's heart meld with Kung Lao, and visions flashed before their eyes while they both witnessed her dystopian future. Quan Chi was seen leading his new zombie army consisting of Lao, Liu, Stryker, Nightwolf and others, while only Raiden, Aiko, Kung Jin, Sonya and Johnny were the known survivors.

Shinnok's Uprising[]

He spotted Kitana's peace talk involving the Shokan and Centaurs from the rafters of a balcony in Kuatan. By the time the portal burst from the enchanted opal, he enlisted the Army of Darkness to attack Edenia and appreciated Tanya for her treacherous roles. He then challenged the humans as they entered Edenia from a new generated portal. Liu Kang led the pack and accepted his new Mortal Kombat tournament before he wished them luck inside his corrupt palace, while Shinnok fought off the Elder Gods.

To Kung Lao, Nightwolf, Aiko and Sub-Zero, the sinister sorcerer seemed oddly familiar to them...

The shaman was the first one to identify him as Quan Chi, the dreaded demon sorcerer to which he knew vividly. It mostly involved the incident with him and the infectious gem of Tetsurri in which he managed to destroy despite struggling with Quan's pet snake and the warring heroes. He and Aiko remembered him the most, though Liu Kang, Sonya and Sub-Zero can barely recall it. Johnny sarcastically mentioned in impatience everyone's connected with him, and it was proven to be true!

Kitana mentioned to Kung Lao that his ancestor also got into scrimmages with him! Quan Chi couldn't directly interfere with Earthrealm, though he was intrigued with the Champion and desired for his soul. He once made a temporary alliance with Shang Tsung, and thru his necromancy, enlisted three women to manipulate and assassinate Lao, Siann, Mika and Sora. His attempts were unsuccessful, though Kahn seemed to have favored him over Shang. He was eventually sealed in the Cobalt Mines of Shokan by Kahn's Shadow Priests, before his banishment to the Netherrealm.

He also played a big part in Aiko's past recalling how she escaped from the gem's influence while saving one of the Koopalings from a thornbush. The rest of the Kombatants were brainwashed, while she, the Koopas and Nightwolf put an end to Quan's schemes.

The Shokan general explained to Sonya and Johnny that Quan Chi has been weakened to cobalt, thus the beasts' idea on constructing equipment with that compound, especially since Quan doesn't have a human heritage. He was imprisoned there as was Shang a few times upon his failed attempts against the Great Kung Lao.

Quan Chi burst the two titanium doors asunder at the subterranean tomb, noticing that Tanya's corpse was decimated! He grew very irate that she failed to capture and kill Liu Kang and vowed with a tight fist he shall kill him himself!

Quan Chi was seen in the lost data chip reprogrammed by Nightwolf and Smoke, revealing Sektor's recordings of the sorcerer employing Bi-Han to assassinate Scorpion and the necromancer giving bones of Hanzo's family to the former Grandmaster as payment! It revealed Quan Chi alone seamlessly killed Scorpion's family and clan!! He then confessed in front of Bi-Han and the resurrected Scorpion he did all those heinous crimes and was about to send the latter to the Netherrealm; however, he ran into the madman and sent them both away before the surveillance went blank. It was revealed by Nightwolf he read about the Great Kung Lao, and he and Shang wanted the first Champion's soul. One of the ways was having Shang possess Takeda with the dark wraith churning him into Scorpion and killed Jen! He did just that to Hanzo's empty vessel feeding him lies after his mind cracked!

He was then seen inside the throne room of the Edenian Palace, in which he just lounged around while his forces were clashing with the cavalry consisting of Shokan, Centaurs, and Saurians, while the Tarkatans broke their cover. He then noticed Baraka sneaking in and implored him to enter. He stated he had no reason to hide, not even from the Elder Gods, as when the war's over, everyone would be dead, with only him and Baraka to rule all of Edenia! That didn't impress the general as he was unwilling to serve a madman throughout the rest of his life! Baraka tried to bare his deadly blades into him, although, thanks to the sacred Amulet, Quan Chi only made a doppelganger of himself! He suspended the Tarkatan in midair until he was strangled!! Scorpion's spear wrapped around the demon's throat, then as he commandeered it, the hold was so taut that Quan was unable to break away, and his head soon popped off from his collapsing corpse!! They were soon incinerated by the wraith's fiery breath, before he took away the Amulet, only to help Sub-Zero return it to the Temple of Elements in Earthrealm!

Mortal Kombat: Vengeance[]

Quan Chi's intervened when Shang Tsung was losing against Liu Kang after he made the sneak attack in the Wu Shi Arena. The demon made a cheap shot onto Liu's unprotected back and Shang put him in a stranglehold! He prevented Liu's head from moving and escaping, until Shang was able to snap his neck to the left, leaving his body limp and lifeless. As soon as he was about to retrieve the former Champion's soul, it immediately skyrocketed thru the gathering clouds! He let out most of his doomed souls after it, till he was electrocuted by lightning! He instantly suspected it was Raiden and enraged Quan on being still with awe! Kiba and Nightwolf came into the fray, and the sorcerer was little match against the two electrokinetics! He ordered Quan Chi, and they dissipated away!

The Deadly Alliance was operating the upcoming Palace as they were enslaving the people of Sun Do, either as sacrifices to imprison their souls for Onaga and his undead army, feeding them to the Onis below, or forcing them to build their fortress. It was stated by Shang that they informed the sorcerer the location was the secret belonging to the Soulnado. With the Amulet, Quan Chi shall be able to unlock the vicious storm in order to attain endless amounts of souls from the Heavens while he whipped the poor prisoners half to death. They even sent out Mavado and Hsu Hao to scout the meddling heroes to make sure they perished upon the destruction of the Dragonfly.

Unfortunately, according to Shang, it was confirmed they're still alive with their souls ripe for the taking. Quan then grew irritable over Shang Tsung's orders, even way back when the Unholy Alliance was formed during the Great Kung Lao's time, even though Kahn praised him over Shang due to his competence. He was about to land a hit with his Cat O' Nine Tails till Shang pointed out the heroes' survival. Though he was gleaming with his Amulet on unlocking the Soulnado and rallying up the Tarakatan army.

Quan conjured the volatile storm, as warned by Hanzo his Amulet was replicated exactly from Shinnok's, and Quan is nearly as gifted as the fallen Elder God! Lao and Fujin volunteered to shut it down, much to his and Shang's dismay! He was distracted by an enraged Scorpion, so consumed that his strength dwindled amongst Quan's replenished energy from the endless souls! He declared the roles were reversed as Hanzo's not in Hell anymore... He threw Scorpion into the Soulnado, making his body and soul be torn apart!! Quan then fought off Nightwolf, mostly along with Lao; his possession was proven ineffective as the shaman recognized his tactics and used his soul-empowered weapons. He was proven quite a threat, especially when he used his Jack the Ripper techniques leeching Quan's vitality! The wounded Kenshi sliced his neck before Shang was exploded by Lao's F3 Brutality!

Quan denounced to Raiden and Fujin, barely alive, that their efforts were for naught as the sorcerers had enough life for Onaga's resurrection and his undead, loyal army. Fujin was aggravated on his words, but it had been confirmed when the "blunder Gods" witnessed the reanimation of the mummies! Fujin conjured an aero sphere onto the dying Oni before the brothers were stupefied of Onaga's entry!

Final Kombat[]

Quan Chi emerged into the Netherrealm smack dab in Shinnok's Spire wounded from battle. Shinnok grew irritated that he failed to kill Orin and hinder Taven's progression on the quest for Blaze. The sorcerer explained Orin wasn't alone, and he was assisted by a powerful warrior possessing fire, lightning, and extraordinary martial arts. He also seemed to know him before he kicked Quan into the rip conjured by Orin upon the hero's signal. Shinnok grew intrigued of this new fighter and hastened preparations for his cohorts. Quan was nearly certain it might be another, more potent, incarnate of Liu Kang!

In his weakened state he was still able to convince the overlords otherwise in Kahn's Fortress. Kahn was the first to agree with Quan's strategy on cooperating against their enemies for Armageddon before claiming the prize of Blaze's flames, while Shang and Onaga had objected. The two were reluctant to accept Quan's pep talk although Hanzo and Taven were relieved no one knew it was all a setup. He was one of the first to approach the portal, before turning on the hasty intruders.

Quan Chi ambushed Sareena who'd love to force her to join his ranks again in the Brotherhood of Shadow; however, since the demon wore Cobalt armor, this negated some of the Oni's abilities and thus relied on hand-to-hand kombat. He was winning over her until he was hit by Jax who won over his undead legion seamlessly. He teleported away and sicced Jax till he was tased by Stryker. He retaliated and was then covered by Ashrah's holy might till she was hit by Nitara. He was soon fought off by Nightwolf as deja vu to their other bouts. By the time they raced up the Pyramid, Liu Kang fought him and tossed him down onto his old nemesis, Shang.

He was at first taken off guard by Fire God Liu Kang's new prowess. He still attempted to ascend the Pyramid, even bested over Bo' Rai Cho and Kenshi. Although he was easily distracted by Quan Chi who clobbered him from above, courtesy of the elemental's distraction. They fought with every tooth and nail before Blaze erupted and ceased both sorcerers from existence...
