Rain is a character in the Mortal Kombat fighting game series. The Demi-God son of the God Argus and half-brother to the Demi-Gods Taven and Daegon, Rain is a treacherous Edenian Prince wishing to claim the Outworld throne while seeking revenge against his father for the death of his mother.
Rain made his debut in Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 as a gag character before gaining an expanded backstory and becoming a recurring character in the series. He later returned as one of the many playable characters in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon. Rain would appear in Mortal Kombat (2011) as a playable character through DLC as part of the Season Pass.
Rain appeared in Mortal Kombat X as a non-playable fightable character while also serving as a minor antagonist in the game's Story Mode.
Rain returned again in Mortal Kombat 11 as a playable character through DLC as part of the Kombat Pack 2, becoming the first character in Mortal Kombat history to appear in more than one game as a downloadable character.
Rain was originally meant to appear in Mortal Kombat 3 but didn't actually appear until Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. Rain was originally a red herring inserted by the game developers; a character shown in the game's attract mode who did not actually exist within the game itself. A recent interview reveals that the insert was made by Ed Boon himself to intentionally trick players. Many MK fans searched for him in vain, with the eventual realization of his status as a joke character (named after a Prince song, "Purple Rain" due to Boon himself being a longtime fan of the musician) dawning. The joke expands further when it is revealed that Rain is a "prince" himself. He would, however, soon make an actual appearance in the console versions of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, and Mortal Kombat Trilogy as a full-fledged character with his own history (that of a traitor to his realm) and move set, to the delight of many fans and the chagrin of others.

Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks, Part II[]
Liu Kang wound up at the top floor of an abandoned Bell Tower. He noticed he'd been separated from Kitana, plus the walls looked warped and felt damp. He wandered thru the Tower as he heard some machinery still active, contrary to the main bell. He wound up at the basement and came across a wide bed of 6-foot-long spikes! Following the descending rope, he saw a chute, and Kitana was in it! He cried her name, but she never stirred. He was suddenly ambushed by a familiar adversary, the purple ninja and prince of Edenia, Rain!
Three months ago, Liu Kang and the defenders followed some suspicious portal readings coming from the New Guinea jungles. He was caught off guard by the outcast, and Kitana halted the fight; at one point they were engaged, which increased Liu's jealousy and distrust in Rain since he was an exile of Outworld. Or so he said. After the group was attacked by Lin Kuei cyborgs, Liu was separated from the princess, but her dropped fan was left as a clue, pointing toward an abandoned tower. He and Stryker proceeded and dealt with some Centaur guards. Then they dispersed and Liu rescued Kitana from her shackles after destroying a multi-headed mutant. Kitana offered to fend off Rain, but the tower began to collapse, and he escaped in a watery portal.
The monk remembered him as an enemy, and Rain proved to be a challenge as his hydrokinesis clashed with Liu's opposing element. He then unleashed some bolts of lightning following the wet patches to conduct his attacks; Liu wasn't wearing armor, so he was hapless. Then, a plan struck him as he led Rain's strikes close to the active contraption! The strike disabled it and suspended Kitana over the spikes! In addition, Rain too was electrocuted by the advancing sparks! Luckily Liu's thermal energy enabled him to dry from within, thus preventing on being zapped! He managed to destroy the gears and saved Kitana by using a Flying Kick over the spikes, but it wasn't long before the old tower caved in! Rain plowed thru the stories to his demise!
Final Kombat[]
Rain made an ambush onto Taven as he was traversing thru the Arctika wastelands. His mission was to stall him on his parents' quest on attaining the so-called prize after defeating Blaze in kombat. It was a tough scrimmage between the two, and Taven looked at Rain's title as 'prince' with disdain. His hydrokinesis nearly cancelled Taven's pyrokinesis, although his brawn bested Rain! He escaped thru a bone chilling watery portal before Taven was met up by some Lin Kuei scouts.
It was revealed by Bo Rai Cho to Taven during the Edenian soiree about Rain's origins. He was actually a bastard, abandoned by his parents, Argus and Amara, as he had an affair with her and wanted to hide the truth. Commoners took him in, and Taven never knew he had an older half sibling, and after discovering his abandonment and heritage, the title of prince went to Rain's head. He shortly served Kahn to ensure his position and since he found out about the cheating of his dad, it was rumored he killed Amara, like how Daegon slain Argus himself. Rain still only wanted the prize of Blaze for himself and never let his weaker, inferior brothers meddle. Still, he was bested in battle by Frost and was incinerated during the firestorm, making Taven as the true successor as the Protector God of Edenia.
Trivia[]
- Of course, the name itself was a shoutout to Prince, one of Ed Boon's favorite artists, and his signature song, Purple Rain.
- According to the MK1's site source code, his purpose is ambition; nothing new as the scholar sorcerer of Outworld and perhaps still the pompous prince of Outworld.
