Rosalina is a recurring character that debuted in Super Mario Galaxy, first appearing in the Gateway Galaxy. She is a very powerful figure, as her duty is to watch over and protect the cosmos, while also serving as the adopted mother of the Lumas and commanding the Comet Observatory.

Rosalina's backstory is chronicled in her storybook told by her in the Comet Observatory's Library in Super Mario Galaxy. Nine chapters are unlocked throughout the game, and the last is unlocked by completing the game.

Biography[]

Past[]

As a young girl, Rosalina met Luma in a rusted starship. (Presumably the Starshroom) Luma was crying because he was looking for his mother, who was coming for him on a comet. Rosalina promised to wait for her with Luma. One night, Rosalina looked for Luma's mother with her father's telescope. When they could not find her anywhere, Rosalina decided to look for Luma's mother themselves. Rosalina and Luma fixed the rusty starship and set sail to the starry sky.

Many days passed, and Rosalina got hungry. She looked at her packed essentials, but realizes she forgot to bring water. Luma then gets some star bits and asks Rosalina if she wanted some. She agrees to have some star bits, and she and Luma began to collect star bits with Rosalina's net.

After traveling much, the pair finally found a comet, but Luma's mother was nowhere to be found there. Rosalina and Luma decided to rest in the comet for a while.

One night, Rosalina had a dream about her mother. When she asks her mother where she is going, her mother tells her to not fret since she is not going anywhere, and is always watching over her, like the sun in the day and the moon in the night. Rosalina then sadly asks her what about when it rains, and she can't see the sun or the moon.

Her mother thinks for a moment before responding that she will turn into a star in the clouds and wait for her tears to dry. Afraid she will never see her mother again, Rosalina started crying. Luma started crying as well, before Rosalina attempted to calm Luma down. She then says to Luma that she will take care of him.

Rosalina and Luma decided to make a house of their own. They realize the house was too big for just the two of them, and Rosalina knew it would be enough if her father, brother, and mother were here. That night, she falls asleep in the starship, clutching her favorite stuffed bunny close to her heart.

One day, Rosalina meets other Lumas from an apricot planet. They all start calling Rosalina "Mama", which confused Rosalina. She decided to take all of them to the new house, after she finished naming them all.

After seeing the 100th comet, Rosalina wondered if her home planet was still as blue as it was. She used her father's telescope to find a terrace, where she used to go stargazing when she was at her home planet. She remembered the memories she spent with her father, brother, and mother, but she suddenly burst into tears when she remembered her mother.

Luma tried to comfort Rosalina by saying her mother is part of her, but Rosalina could not stop her tears. That was when Luma transformed into a comet that can carry everyone on this journey. Rosalina was surprised, so the Lumas told her about their destiny. Rosalina hugged the Lumas and decided to no longer have star bits on her eyes.

One day, a new Luma was welcomed to the new family of Rosalina. She and the Lumas made a star cake together, and Rosalina smiled and thought to herself that she accepted her new family, and that she will stay with them until they are ready to leave home. And when they do leave, she will see them off with a smile, since that's what makes a mother happiest. That night, when Rosalina lay down to sleep, she saw a soft light which reminded her of her former home. She thought she could go back home once every hundred years to "nap in her favorite sleeping nook".

Super Mario Galaxy[]

During one of her centennial visits to the Mushroom Kingdom, the Comet Observatory is attacked by Bowser, who steals the observatory's Power Stars and Grand Stars. Rosalina later appeared to Mario/Luigi after Peach is kidnapped. In order to aid Mario/Luigi, she gives him Luma, the same one seen with Peach at the Star Festival. Once Mario/Luigi collects the first Grand Star, she explains to him that Bowser stole the Power Stars and requests that he help get them back.

After Mario/Luigi collects enough stars to power the ship, Rosalina flies the observatory to the center of the universe for the final confrontation with Bowser. After the Lumas sacrifice themselves to stop the giant black hole created by the sun thus, erasing the game's events from history, and thus, resetting the timeline, Rosalina appears to Mario/Luigi and explains the "cycle of life" to him before he awakens at Peach's Castle. When Mario/Luigi looks up in the sky and spots a reborn galaxy, Rosalina explains to him that all new life will carry the essence of the stars, including Mario/Luigi himself.

In the true ending cutscene, (after collecting 120 stars with both Mario and Luigi) Rosalina gives her thanks to the player, telling them she will watch over them beyond the stars. She then proceeds to transform the Comet Observatory into a comet and shoots off into the stars.

Super Mario Galaxy 2[]

Rosalina appears during the ending sequence of Super Mario Galaxy 2. Lubba reveals at this time that he and Rosalina had met before, but the details of their meeting remain unknown. Rosalina also frequently sends letters to Baby Luma that travels with Mario, but she does not reveal her identity in them.

When Mario and Luigi collect 120 stars in the game and defeat the final boss again, she will be in her library reading the story of the game to Lumas, she will reveal that there are green stars in the game.

After the player gets all green stars, and completes "The Perfect Run", Rosalina is met at the end of "The Perfect Run" and thanks the player for getting all the stars. She joins Mario above Starship Mario.

Super Mario 3D World/Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury[]

Super Mario Odyssey[]

An 8-bit sprite of her can be found on a vegetable on the Dark Side of the Moon and a wall on the Darker Side of the Moon. When interacted with, her 8-bit sprite spins while Mario gets 10 coins.
