Hanzo Hasashi, (波佐志 半蔵) Kuai Liang in MK1, better known as Scorpion (全蠍人 Zenkatsujin, "Full Scorpion Man"), is a resurrected ninja in the Mortal Kombat fighting game series as well as the mascot of the games. He is one of the very few original characters debuting in the first Mortal Kombat arcade game. He holds the distinction, along with Raiden and Sub-Zero (in one form or another), of appearing in every generation of Mortal Kombat games as a playable character.

Throughout the series, Scorpion has been a misguided antagonist after his resurrection, following those on the side of evil out of revenge and anger over the death of his family and clan. After being restored to his Human form and learning the truth about their demise, he has been a recurring supporting character for the series. Even to the point on raising Takeda while his father is out to kill Shang Tsung.

Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks, Part II[]

Scorpionclassic

Scorpion has been seen in a few flashback scenes. Mostly when Liu Kang and Kung Lao dealt with his two fiery battles in the Netherrealm, or when Liu and Sub-Zero managed to defeat him. With the former winning over him since the cryomancer was filled with anger for having his clan destroyed.

The first time was when he worked for Shang Tsung, both during the first tournament and attempting to massacre the Shaolin Monks but failed as he was pulled into the magma by his undead legion. The second time was about three months later, when he escaped and attempted to bring the endless undead army back to life from all realms, but he was thwarted by Liu Kang once more then his body was sealed away by Raiden.

Shinnok's Uprising[]

MK4 Scorpion

Scorpion escaped the Netherrealm along with Quan Chi, Shinnok, Reiko and the Army of Darkness! He assisted on the destruction of the Edenian Palace!

Inside the abandoned gurney, Nightwolf sensed the assailant and warned Kuai to evade him! The fiery streak melted Baraka's icy prison conjured by Kuai, but Scorpion's only target was the Lin Kuei ninja! With his powerful blows and his enhanced strength from years spent in the Netherrealm, Kuai lost as he didn't fight back. Scorpion was about to finish him until Kuai implored he must see the data chip attained from Sektor's remains. Nightwolf displayed the chip both he and Smoke analyzed!

He also managed to enter Scorpion's mind, urging him to fight the darkness of his evil spirit. He was able to incapacitate him for a while as he shown him the data chip; the recordings had a fuzzy display and the conversations between Quan Chi and Bi-Han were muffled, but the meanings were still clear. The sorcerer hired the best thief to kill Scorpion and lend the bones of Scorpion's family as payment to the former Grandmaster!! Scorpion realized the small skull as his own son along with two others. The footage then shifted to Bi-Han's defeat by Scorpion, then Quan Chi literally unveiled everything between the ninjas and was about to send Hanzo into the Netherrealm, but both maniacs disappeared before the chip went blank.

Nightwolf was able to restore Scorpion's, err in his case Hanzo's, senses and the Matokan came to the conclusion that he'd been manipulated ever since his death; Quan Chi corrupt his soul feeding him lies and letting his dark wraith consume his body and mind! He remembered stories of the Great Kung Lao, even about Takeda, Baron's best friend, was also possessed by a wraith who lured Kung Lao to the Temple of Light and murdered Jen Reyland! Though it was Shang Tsung that made his undead vessel run amok then, as they were both capable of necromancy and wanted Lao's soul for either one or the other! Kuai assured Hanzo none of his actions was his fault but under the will of Quan Chi whom they were after. Baraka returned with his clan of Tarkatans and they were ravenous on tearing apart the demonic army since their DNA was mixed with theirs, he recognized Scorpion and Mileena, and couldn't wait to tear Quan Chi and Shnnok limb from limb. Hanzo begged the warriors to call him that from now on, and the guys were flabbergasted as they saw the mutants charge toward the Edenian Palace without a proper plan! He also remembered Kung Lao as the honorable opponent who fought him twice in the underworld.

He followed Nightwolf and Sub-Zero to the rest of the group of heroes, before he noticed the reckless Tarkatans charging toward the Palace. Knowing that Quan Chi would be there, he slipped away as his spear attached to a nearby tree! The pair ran after him, though he was the first to breach the throne room. Quan Chi was about to kill off the general via Amulet, however, he wasn't so lucky claiming his prey as Scorpion's spear strangled the sorcerer! By the time he commandeered his weapon, it was able to pop off Quan's head from his collapsing corpse; wearing the Cobalt armor, he seemed more immune to Quan's machinations. He then took the Amulet away and knew it was genuine. Raiden met up with the trio and urged Scorpion and Sub-Zero to return the Amulet to the Temple of Elements in order to make Shinnok powerless and remain trapped in the Netherrealm. They took on the mission, and Hanzo explained that the Amulet remained divine despite it being warped by the Brotherhood of Shadow. He believed if they're successful, they'll make sure their realm and families would find peace.

Hanzo and Kuai reached the end of the Temple only to have the wraith hesitate before relinquishing the Amulet, as if he'd use it to usurp it for himself... Kuai tackled him, only to have the artifact fly out of his hands and be magnetized to the end of the pillar. With the real artifact stationed in Earthrealm, Shinnok's powers had been disabled, allowing the Gods to decimate him, and his spirit remain trapped in the Netherrealm!

Hanzo wished Kuai a safe journey and in good terms since he told him the Lin Kuei was moving to Arctika and that Smoke helped find the Dragon Medallion for him! Hanzo relieved Kuai of his undead curse and took off his yellow vial revealing his more human outlook!

Mortal Kombat: Vengeance[]

Mortal-Kombat-X Scorpion Hanzo Hasashi 2

Hanzo attire in MK Vengeance

Fujin soon stopped by his reformed society in Japan. He actually sent a baby to the base, as a favor for a special someone who was vengeful on killing Shang Tsung. He warned Hanzo the Deadly Alliance has returned and killed Liu Kang; luckily, Raiden made an amulet encasing his soul. Upon the news of Quan Chi escaping the Netherrealm, he was given a choice; he can either leave and go to Shang Tsung's Island, or stay and care for the new infant, Takeda, as a favor for Kenshi who lost his sight. The baby himself kept reminding Hanzo of his own son, Satoshi Hasashi, also known by his 'pet' name Jubei. Hanzo eventually decided to go with Fujin and even warned Kuai that if he should meet his nemesis, he may give into his wrathful persona... He also wondered why Kuai never took Smoke for the battle, as Kuai was too nervous on losing him like he did with Oniro. Hanzo wished Kuai would give him a chance as a cyborg. Regardless, he was convinced that having two of the same elementals may confuse the enemy, even though Frost is still considered as a rookie. Eventually, the trio went with Fujin and took them to Shang Tsung's abandoned Island. They had one hour to make last-minute preparations and introduce themselves, mostly to Frost. After that, Raiden warned he can only go as far as the Celestial Portal which would lead the Kombatants to Outworld; only then they're left with their own devices. Hanzo accepted the mission, and he didn't recognize the so-called Asian sages with their floating heads patrolling the portal. He was also impressed of Liu Kang merging with Kung Lao incinerating the latter's Revenant form, as he did so many times while his wrathful self. He still stuck with the team as they traversed thru the dormant Living Forest and into Edenia.

While fighting the Onis, Hanzo was only able to use his pyrokinesis and his longsword. Unfortunately, he couldn't use his deadly spear since he was no longer part of the vengeful undead, Johnny at first was shocked remembering his lethal battles, but also disappointed as it would've given the ninja more of an advantage. He also took in Sonya's advice for the heroes should traverse straight thru the Wastelands instead of taking the tree lines, as the terrain was easier to go thru, and they wouldn't be ambushed as much, not to mention that Hanzo might incinerate the entire forest and share Kuai's lecture that a Kombatant must regard his environment. He then followed a sudden aftershock, and came up to Lao, Aiko and Bo' Rai Cho! He too was disgusted on him abandoning the Shaolin and being banned from the Academy, not even no longer looking out for Lao and Liu! While the heroes assured the Orientals, they shouldn't be ashamed due to his fall from grace, Hanzo suggested to get some shuteye to clear their troubled minds.

The heroes arrived within the Lost Tomb, and he and Kuai were shocked to see a large display of Shinnok's Amulet! Hanzo was the one who doubted Quan Chi was able to attain the real one and keep the duplicate since the genuine relic was sealed in the Temple of Elements. He noticed even the fake can do so much...Kitana mentioned this was the settlement dedicated to Onaga and his undead followers, and he, Kuai, Lao and Jax got to work wrecking the sarcophaguses preventing the undead from rising again. By the time two demons shown up, by Lao's sudden reflex upon Aiko's screech, he identified them as Moloch and Drahmin! He boasted they're "not in Kansas anymore," putting the pair at a disadvantage against Hanzo and Jax! It was thanks to his skills, resourcefulness and pyrokinesis that stunned the flies and the demons. Lao was about to force off Drahmin's mask until Hanzo declared not to remove the Face of Kun-Lo, as he'd stay stable and precise while wearing it compared to his more maniacal side. Eventually, Drahmin and Moloch dissipated as the former declared the heroes would fail against the fugitive, Quan Chi, and his plots. Hanzo believed they'd retreated to Moloch's Lair, a subterranean chamber further into Outworld.

Scorpion attained the stolen Dragonfly with Kenshi and the team, and after it landed near the volcano to hunt for Cyrax, Hanzo volunteered to scout it with the cryomancers and Special Forces agents, minus Kenshi. He was able to retrieve the weakened Kuai via his rope and pulled him up the steep slope. He carried him toward the other team members and informed Cyrax returned to Earthrealm in his malfunctioning state. After Liu's spirit minimized Kuai's high temperature, the Dragon Medallion helped him recuperate. He was also surprised he noticed Baraka assisting against the Deadly Alliance!

After he was revived by Nightwolf, the group was stranded from the Dragonfly crash. He then warned everyone that they're entering Moloch's Lair when they traversed thru the nearby tunnels, following a distress signal from a Sun Do prisoner. He then teamed up with Baraka against the ambushing Onis, even struggling against Moloch's brute force and Drahmin's innate state. Luckily, he was saved by Baraka after he impaled the psychotic demon and sliced Moloch's ball and chain before Hanzo unleashed the ball back crushing the beast! He then made a manly handshake with his new partner!

Scorpion torn by Soulnado

Hanzo assisted against the Tarkatan army, until Jax and Kenshi were able to wipe out the Red Dragons. He was at the Tarkatan War Kamp discussing with Kuai and Frost, dreading he may lose himself if he should meet up with Quan Chi. As the Soulnado was being conjured, he warned even Quan Chi's Amulet can nearly do as much as Shinnok's, as he's a talented Oni and spellcaster barely as gifted as the Elder God! He eventually caved into his wrathful self and became Scorpion once more, much to Quan's admiration, as he struck with his spear! Unfortunately, Scorpion was overpowered by Quan as he declared he's not in Hell anymore, making the sorcerer have the homefield advantage. Thru his insatiable rage, Scorpion destroyed himself and was weak enough to be tossed into the Soulnado! His body and soul were torn asunder and Lao and Fujin witnessed his demise...

Return of the Dragon King[]

Hanzo wound up within the Outworld frontier, just a few miles away from the Edenian Palace. He was surprised to see Kung Lao again, even him! He summarized the Elder Gods gave him another chance in life instead of being casted into the Netherrealm, but rather resting in the Heavens. Alas, he wasn't able to see his lost family, and he was tasked to stop Shujinko in the Nexus by using all the Kamidogu and finishing his quest for Damashi. However, he failed, and he wound up where he was. To redeem himself, he volunteered to stop Onaga and gather all the Champions with Lao. They stopped by the Palace and Goro was kind enough to let them in. Sindel recapped Onaga's rule perceiving Kahn as the first organized ruler of Outworld, and Hanzo warned he had the tendency to revive fallen denizens as his followers; one of them'd be Kitana, much to Sindel's dismay. He still decided to stick with Lao, even when he suddenly passed out.

As the wraith, Scorpion, Kung Lao in his astral form observed him to train Shujinko in order to stand a better chance in the Netherrealm. It wasn't long before he switched to Ermac's then Ashrah's personas and skills.

The actual Hanzo was carrying the unconscious Lao to a nearby hut where Li Mei lived; she was tending Lao till he came to several hours later. He was relieved he was finally awake, even though Lao didn't receive intel of Onaga other than learning that Shujinko was bad news. He suggested that in order to go to other realms, they must take a portal, specifically the Chaosrealm where they can recruit the default Kombatant, Havik. He was also disappointed that the polar opposite realm, the Orderrealm aka Seido, has Hotaru whom he said is just as strict as a Soviet mixed with a Jehovah. He still traversed with Lao and Li Mei to the ancient gateway knowing he and the former monk are capable on entering the Nexus as they'd hearts of Champions, according to Raiden.

She was successful on finding it thru the Kuatan Jungle, until the trio was ambushed by archers, including Johnny! Lao refused to fight him, but Hanzo warned that since he was a wraith bound to Onaga, words won't go thru to him; he must defeat him in kombat. Hanzo helped fend off the troops and protect Li Mei, until they began to gang on them! Luckily, Fujin knocked them off their feet and encouraged Hanzo and Lao to enter the portal while he took the wounded Cage and Li to Earthrealm. He reprimanded Lao that Onaga might monitor them before he was tempted to steal the Earth Kamidogu, so they went into the Chaosrealm.

Hanzo was the only visitor unaffected by the intrinsic atmosphere as he was escorting Kung Lao whose mind was suffering from light-headedness, delirium, and hallucinations. He guided him thru and hypothesized the realm's futuristic style as it may had developed faster than the other realms, due to time passing quickly without perception. He remembered wandering there in search of a fallen comrade and asked Shujinko to find the mask as proof amongst his decaying body. Hanzo found Havik without much effort and even bested him in battle. The cleric was impressed as he broke the shackles on being Quan Chi's revenant bound to rules and his orders. Havik was disgusted of Onaga's second coming and if they won't recruit Hotaru and the Seidans and if he can find his bodyguards, Darrius and Dairou, he'd wreak havoc!

Hanzo made it thru Earthrealm as he carried Kung Lao. He rested him beside the ancient portal, and he suddenly got a call on his wristband then in his mind! The muffled voice actually belonged to Kenshi who was glad to see/hear him alive! He gave him the scoop once he lost the signal and Kenshi suggested to use Aiko's heart gem as an alternative; he was relieved Kung Lao had that same gem. Thru it, he discussed he wouldn't recruit Hotaru from the Orderrealm as he knew he was a fanatic of strict order, possibly serving Onaga. He wasn't sure who the Edenian Champion should be on account its 10 losses and the invasion by Kahn; however, Jerrod offered to impersonate as him by utilizing his soul. With that strategy, Liu and Ermac eventually arrived beside him and the unconscious Shaolin, Liu decided to piece his mind together, then Ermac sensed Shujinko's frail soul, though there was an ominous force interfering it, so they went straight to it. Lao was able to save Liu's soul from a sudden pull from that same dark aura.

Hanzo eventually saw the group as Nightwolf, Kung Lao, Liu Kang and Fujin were struggling against Dark Raiden and his zombie enforcer as Liu's reanimated corpse. Luckily, he wasn't caught in the crossfire as the rainstorm electrocuted both doppelgangers! The benevolent Raiden recovered Fujin and the Champions before he took his brother and Nightwolf to the Jinsei, while he and the Champions teleported to the Dragon Grotto. Hanzo soon went with Lao, Liu and Ermac to the Nexus, before they noticed Shujinko's sizzling, decapitated body in the Houan Temple.

Hanzo and the heroes arrived in the Nexus. He and Liu reminded Lao of that foolhardy stunt to steal the Earthrealm Kamidogu and lure Onaga there. Ermac agreed on the strategy, which to their surprise, it worked! After Lao's flashback, Liu unveiled Damashi was Japanese for deception according to his grandfather. By the time Onaga ambushed the two Shaolin warriors, Hanzo and Ermac hid away as they watched Lao confront Onaga, refusing to surrender the amulet; Liu then urged him to run from portal to portal to get Havik's and other onlookers' attention that the threat has come to life. Hanzo took his chance to take the Netherrealm Kamidogu via his spear!

Hanzo joined the fray as soon as the other Champions were fatigued, and his aerial throw was useful against Onaga. Excepting his spear which was nearly ripped out of his palm before he retracted. His own fiery breath helped withstand Onaga's own streak. But the dragon's powerbomb was too much for the ninja. Nevertheless, Liu's strategy worked as each of the Kamidogu were destroyed as he was vulnerable to attack. Hanzo and the other Champions forced him into Lao's F4 tornado and soon his soul oozed out of the lifeless Reptile. After Havik was kicked out by Ermac, he was escorted to the Sky Temple where he reunited with his old friend, Kenshi! He was also thrilled to reunite with the fallen Shaolin warriors.

Final Kombat[]

Hanzo with spear

Hanzo assisted Kenshi on raising his son, Takeda, at the Shirai Ryu headquarters, and the baby was developing well and rather quickly. Hanzo went with Kenshi as they were summoned by Raiden to the Dragon Grotto, where he stated his angsts involving Blaze and Armageddon. He shared with Kenshi and Liu's worries their enemies may gang up on them, and the Thunder God believed they may have their machinations in the Netherrealm, even Quan Chi. Hanzo agreed and went with him, Lao, Nightwolf, Aiko and Frederick there.

He knew all too well of Kharon, his ship, and the voyage across the Sea of Blood to carry the fresh damned souls to their eternal prisons. He led the charge onboard, even as soon as undead legions from the sea invaded onboard! He was one of the warriors that wasn't fazed by the sickening sea, as he at first fought hand-to-hand before he used his spear to toss them off! He wasn't able to save Aiko from her sickness nor falling, nor was he able to use his spear to escape the sinking ship! Luckily, Frederick transported everyone to the isle of Shinnok's Spire, and he was a vital part on ascending it and dealing with the many dangers. He even noticed the deformed Shinnok and was hardly fazed by the last encounter, the corruption of his family, the ignorance of the Elder Gods, and his assistance for Armageddon. Nevertheless, the team found a wounded Havik whi was injured by Taven then left for dead. Hanzo escorted him to a portal of the Chaosrealm by Caro.

He met up with Taven inside Kahn's Fortress in Outworld and he stopped him before he rescued Shujinko. Recalling his failure and treachery from the mimic and the Elder Gods, he coaxed Taven to leave the geezer to rot. During the discussion with Taven, he mentioned in the Chaosrealm, he assisted Havik against Dairou and Darrius reconverting them into chaos than order, rather than being brainwashed by Shinnok's double.

The Kahn mecha interrupted their conversation, even their battles against Motaro the Minotaur and soon Reiko in which he offered. Caving into his rage and recalling working with him in the Netherrealm as Shinnok's general, he incinerated Reiko and never took Taven's advice on crippling their enemies as they'd be restored fully in the Netherrealm for Armageddon. He still eavesdropped with Taven on the overlords in the throne room, talking about attaining Blaze's flames for the prize while cooperating to take out the heroes; the pair were relieved that they didn't know it was all a setup! Shang detected the intruders and made their hasty escape, until Taven warped them to the courtyard and ran thru Caro's portal!

While he escorted Taven to the Edenian Palace, he remembered Shinnok mentioning that he diffused himself and had utter hatred to the Elder Gods, which he used to serve as their Champion before he failed to defeat the faker, Shujinko. Hanzo realized that like Shinnok, he knew well on declaring vengeance and consuming his being, and the Elder Gods promised to bring back his family... Remembering how petty they were to Raiden and Liu Kang, with Earthrealm in peril by various threats, he affirmed he shall accept their losses and devote his heart to Takeda as a second son. Hanzo then recalled being in the Chaosrealm as he assisted Havik to reconvert Dairou and Darrius to the ways of chaos, as they were thralled by Shinnok's doppelganger, erasing their higher callings as protestors against Order. Hanzo remembered Shinnok's private chat on losing his own sanity from corruption and thus, the former wraith decided to keep his promise and attain the amulet against Raiden's warnings, as he knew where to go in the Temple.

The duo picked up the festive organ emitting from the Palace, and he became anxious on finding a portal to Earthrealm, particularly to the Shirai Ryu base. Luckily, Jerrod was able to help him, and he met up with Kenshi. They agreed they shall spend their last minutes holding Takeda before they'd rendezvous in Edenia. That was until they were ambushed by Bi-Han, much to Hanzo's dismay he wasn't Kuai like he thought. He, however, refused to fight knowing that Bi-Han was there to settle unfinished business. Kenshi intervened instead and reasoned with him that Bi-Han was responsible for the eternal feud buying into Quan's deception and serving evil by two sorcerers; Kenshi projected Hanzo's thoughts into the heartless cryomancer to settle the score using his memories and Sektor's data chip as proof. Even when his clan and family were slain by the Oni Kenshi forced Bi-Han to redeem himself quickly before all of existence shall be erased.

Kenshi then picked up Takeda's cries telepathically and he led Hanzo to them. They followed them to the crib and Kenshi was able to calm him down; he stated Takeda learnt fast to read minds as he sensed tension outside. Hanzo actually decided to stay with the baby while Kenshi would fight along with the Special Forces in Armageddon. He appreciated the offer, hoping Hanzo would uphold Takeda's legacy. Hours later, Hanzo actually slipped out of the base and searched for the Temple of Elements recalling Shinnok's words. The weakened vessel wanted to make Hanzo as his messenger so he can attain the sealed amulet and give it to him in the Netherrealm while the doppelganger should orchestrate the battle with Kahn.

He arrived in the nick of time, soon after Shinnok's double stole the black heart and was leaving the original to die. Hanzo gave him the amulet which rejuvenated his strength but due to the sensitivities of Armageddon and pining for Cetrion to staunch the starvation for life, Shinnok released his anger to the heavens, which caused the dark heart to dissipate! With the two relics activated, Cetrion's memories and revival were salvaged! Hanzo then noticed Shinnok ascend and it was soon briefed he shall govern Purgatory! Hanzo and Kenshi were strolling Takeda and wondered for their future; Hanzo would still have the sleeping wraith in him, but it would be staunched as long as Takeda would provide him support. Bi-Han, according to Sareena, put aside his discrepancies to him and the Shirai Ryu, and he made as an excellent mentor to Takeda growing up! They still function as Earthrealm's protectors to this day.

Trivia[]

  • Ikran finally had chosen an ideal voice actor for her MK fanfics. While he'd have the usual VAs as Scorpion, she'd rather pick the Australian action star, Russel Crowe, for his human form!
  • Scorpion shall be chosen for one of Ikran's Undead Characters.
  • Erroneously in Mortal Kombat: Vengeance, it was mentioned that Hanzo no longer uses his spear since he's no longer the undead wraith as it protrudes thru his palm. However, later on, it was stated that Hanzo HAS retained his spear! It was an error, but it can just be Hanzo changing back into his wrathful self temporarily, ie against the Onis and/or the Tarkatan army.
  • Ever since his humanization after Shinnok's Uprising, he always seems to correct everyone who called him Scorpion, "Hanzo, please." As he doesn't want to be reminded of his wrathful self. It can also be a reference to Winter's reformed self in Santa Claus is Coming to Town.
  • It was confirmed by series writer, Dominic Cianciolo, Scorpion's identity is actually Kuai Liang in MK1!
    • His source code description in MK1 is Honor.
