Sindel is a character in the Mortal Kombat fighting game series. She made her debut in Mortal Kombat 3.

Sindel returned in Mortal Kombat 11 as a DLC character, being the fourth character available in the Kombat Pack. She also served as a secondary antagonist in the Aftermath Story Mode expansion, serving it alongside Shao Kahn.

Despite her menacing appearance, Sindel is kind and benevolent in nature, at least in the original timeline. She rules the Realm of Edenia alongside her daughter, Princess Kitana. Sindel's power appears to be of an inner, ethereal nature in more than one way. She is a distinctly older and more mature character, with flowing grey hair and a regal attitude befitting of her role as Queen of Edenia. She has a natural affinity with aerial magic, as evidenced by her ability to levitate and manipulate sonic waves.

In Mortal Kombat: Deception, creator Ed Boon describes Sindel as a challenging character in more ways than one. Although Sindel is not one of the main characters in the series, she was involved in a big part of the game. This had to do with the fact that her rule over Edenia made her a target for many other rulers like Shao Kahn, Shinnok, and Onaga. Sindel was one of the few villainous characters to become heroic in the series.

Sindel's backstory is retconned in Mortal Kombat 11, revealing that she had been evil all along, with her supposed unwillingness to marry Shao Kahn being a lie that she told to keep the Edenians (and especially Kitana) loyal to her. She resented Jerrod for trading away their powers and believing themselves to be no better than commoners, while falling in love with Shao Kahn's willingness to assert his own dominance and take what was his.

A new version of Sindel appears in Mortal Kombat 1 as a playable character while serving as a supporting ally in the game's Story Mode. In the new timeline, Sindel is once again shown on the side of good and now serve as an Empress of Outworld. She also has two daughters with Mileena as the oldest daughter.

Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks, Part II[]

Sindel MK9 render

First appearance

Queen Sindel's corpse was found by Shang Tsung and Quan Chi, the two deadliest sorcerers from Outworld and the Netherrealm. They were assigned by Shao Kahn who'd just recovered his long, lost strength. The incantation was successful, and with Sindel alive, this was the key for Kahn to invade both Outworld and the Earthrealm without the Elder Gods spotting him.

Sindel was seen briefly as she became one of several Kombatants turned Revenants serving under Quan Chi; after she screamed and stunned many heroes before assassinating them, she was then blown up by Nightwolf before she was resurrected during Aiko's dystopian future. She was also mentioned by Mileena before confronting Kitana and settling the score, as she and Baraka said her mom is waiting for Kitana, albeit depended on what she meant by alive...

She was then overlooking the New York cityscape as Kahn sent out his extermination squads. The heroes advanced with their clever Animality forms! Seeing them breaking thru the defenses, Sindel stole the wounded Tsung's energy which empowered her potency of her lethal shrieks!! They stunned each of the warriors, until Aiko was barely able to use her cardiokinesis to disable her! She then taunted for her daughter to enter, and Kitana and Liu Kang were on hot pursuit.

Sindel made a surprise attack from above the Temple and belittled Kitana as being weak and labeling Mileena as her true daughter! Kitana tried to make her remember Edenia, the peaceful rule with Jerrod, how she committed suicide from Kahn's abusive relationship and usurping all peace and life... They never fazed Sindel, and Liu urged Kitana to fight back! Sindel was proven to be a lethal opponent with her screams, spear, levitation, and hairlocks so tight that they strangled Kitana!! She incapacitated Liu before he used his pyrokinesis from the rows of candles combusting her!! Sindel was knocked out abruptly, though she eventually came to.

Moments later, she broke off a fight between Sheeva and Nightwolf, and the trio convinced there'd be a chance to restore Edenia if the Champion's successful. Sindel shall be proud to reunite with her trusted bodyguard once more. By the time Liu Kang was able to destroy Kahn, they then watched the Tower's collapse with pride and offered to rebuild the ruins of Edenia with Asgaarth and others.

Moments later she restored her throne as the Queen of Edenia once more, never willing to extend to the ruins of Outworld, reminding her of Kahn's savage conquest... She later anointed Sheeva as her personal bodyguard and also offered for Liu Kang to watch over her daughter and remain as a beacon of hope to both Edenia and Earthrealm.

Shinnok's Uprising[]

Restored appearance

Sindel, now as the established Queen of Edenia, was alerted by her advisor, Sheeva, of the new group of refugees. She bid them to enter and the ambassador and his daughter, Tanya, introduced themselves as escapees from the new realm, Triche. The father mentioned his people were enslaved by a sorcerer named Sil Kaad and it was a quiet realm cherished for its art! Sindel was then offered an opal as a token for peace and sanctuary which infatuated her and Asgaarth. Sheeva, however, became more suspicious, but the gem shattered while a portal opened! Sindel was caught off guard as was her people while they were attacked by the Army of Darkness, Shinnok, and Quan Chi! She and her denizens didn't stand a chance, and Edenia fell!

Days later, some of the prisoners were growing weary and weak, even herself... Until they noticed Kung Lao and Aiko outside of their crowded cell. He urged them to back up, though there wasn't a lot of wiggle room. He still Teleported behind the booby-trapped prisons and warped the inmates out under Quan Chi's and Shinnok's noses. The former monk contacted Sonya to conjure a portal leading into Earthrealm; she stated it can only be created from the last pinpoint close to the Bayan Har Mountains. Much to Lao's relief, he led everyone to the Wu Shi Academy, much to the monks' dismay on encountering otherworlders.

A few days later, she reclaimed the throne of Edenia, and the monarchs stated to Nightwolf that they must be more prepared for any future invitations from refugees, while also keeping in mind that only six realms exist, according to Raiden. They also needed to handle Baraka and the Tarkatans cleaning out the bloody cells before they should be exiled to Outworld. She also noticed Syzoth being double-crossed by Chameleon who was willing to reform Zaterra. She soon looked out the large windows and gazed up at the moon, wishing Raiden Godspeed as the new Elder God.

Mortal Kombat: Vengeance[]

Asgaarth alerted the Edenian Queen that a group of Earthrealmers arrived. Sindel was joyous on seeing them, though from her advisor, Sheeva, she felt something was happening in their homeworld. The heroes left Kung Lao and Aiko to address the troubling business on the Deadly Alliance returning, almost killing off Liu Kang save for his soul, and their mission was to resurrect the Dragon King and his undead army. Sindel was shocked of the news, and she stated to everyone that Onaga preceded Kahn as ruler of Outworld! Back in 8450 BC, in Earth's time, Onaga had Kahn as his advisor, until he became so irritated working under him, thus beginning his long, tyrannical regime. As well as killing Jerrod, usurping Edenia and other smaller realms, and losing herself afterwards... Lao apologized for opening deep past wounds, though she was determined to put an end to the oncoming calamity, enlisting Kitana and Jade for the mission. Goro may be unwilling to either serve Shang again or continue to hide and regulate the Shokan race. Sindel wished everyone luck, while Sheeva and Asgaarth held the fort.

After Baraka saved Aiko from a couple of Outworld nomads, she gifted her a red staff named the Kwan Do; it was the same weapon that was offered to her by Queen Sindel in his dystopian future, the same one she came from! It seemed there were two forms of her, the benevolent queen of Edenia and Twindel who was infatuated with Shao Kahn and deliberately killed Jerrod! The pure Sindel used to train Aiko in advanced kombat along with Baraka before he was sent back in time!

Queen Sindel was seen in her throne as Sheeva found and tended Goro. The monarch and her bodyguard assured Goro to remember the positives if the heroes should war against the Deadly Alliance; she didn't blame his angsts as she too will lose herself if she'd dare to confront Kahn again, as he would if he'd confront Shang. She hoped that Kung Lao won't lose his head neither. Asgaarth then arrived and alerted the royals the Kombatants engaged the Deadly Alliance.

She was one of the beholders witnessing the Soulnado, and soon its decimation. She was thrilled the heroes were successful liberating Outworld and putting Liu's soul to rest, even shocked to see a time displaced Baraka escorted by Kitana and Jade! She decreed that since he proved to be an essential part of the Kombatants' success against the Tarkatan army, the Onis, etc. Thus, his punishment would be reduced, and he can relocate close to the Edenian border, although the Shokan and Centaurs shall keep an eye out for him and the remaining Tarkatans. She also pined on Raiden's words what would become of Outworld, Liu's soul, and whether or not Onaga shall be reincarnated; even wondered what would become of Reptile according to the lone nomad.

The Return of the Dragon King[]

Sindel addressed before Kung Lao and Hanzo as they bowed to her. She was anxious of Kitana's wellbeing, which seemed urgent considering she was caught in Raiden's explosion and Onaga has been resurrected! Hanzo warned he had the tendency to revive the dead as his followers bound to him. Sindel then explained on how Kahn was able to rule over the Dragon King, simply by poisoning him, and she was determined for Lao and Hanzo to gather Champions from all the realms, while also attain intel from Shujinko's odyssey, as she met him once before Kahn's invasion. She then decided to join Jade and the Edenian royal guard as they'd find answers in the Lost Tomb where the King's sarcophagus remained intact. Liu decided to tag along while Goro stayed with Sheeva and Asgaarth.

Sindel, Jade and the royal guard made it to the Lost Tomb. And after traversing thru some thick lumps of dust left over by the decimated sarcophaguses and dead flies, they discovered Onaga's resting place still intact. The lid was open, and the skeletal remains stood out. The Edenians came to the conclusion that it was left by Onaga's followers to revive him in his original form if he should perish. Before they made plans to destroy it, the knights were attacked! In emerged Tanya as well as the corrupt Kitana by her side!! Sindel was too stunned to fight her own daughter that she only defended herself with her Kwan Do and basic punches and kicks; she even went thru an exorcist by Nightwolf on removing the banshee from her body, thus disabling her flight and sonokinesis. Sindel was weakened while Jade mopped the floor easily with the traitor. Even she was little match for Kitana's ferocity, till she was caught and viciously tossed back by Ermac's soul kinesis! Sindel was still stunned, until Aiko and Ermac were able to restore the Edenians and troops. Kitana was the first to come to and... reunite with her long-lost father, King Jerrod!! Sindel couldn't believe it, until he affirmed his identity; she was just as tearful as her restored daughter was...

Eventually, everyone gathered their bearings and made plans to stop Onaga while his original remains were being burnt by Liu's spirit. She needed to buy Kung Lao and Hanzo time to gather Champions from all the realms, and the Kombatants must prevent the dragon to collect the last Kamidogu. Liu offered to head to Earthrealm, then Kenshi made the portal to its prior location in China, which was close to their destination! Sindel, Aiko, Jade, Kitana, Kenshi, Liu, Jerrod and the knights marched thru it.

They arrived at Liu's Tomb, and the monk suggested to contact Hanzo or Kuai, in which some of the heroes were astonished he was still alive! Sindel offered to travel to the Temple of Elements to protect the Amulet of Shinnok, but she wasn't sure who the Edenian Champion once since Kahn invaded for 10,000 years. Fortunately, Jerrod decided to impersonate as him in order to use the Kamidogu. She remained there, even when Kenshi and Aiko sensed disturbing activity from the Academy. She then assured Aiko...

"Even if the realm may turn against you, know that I'll always remain by your side. Remember that."

Sindel was relieved of Kenshi's and Aiko's return although she was unable to stop an erratic Johnny escape from his prison in search of the last Kamidogu; she didn't buy into the Knights' complacence on him not finding the relic. Luckily, he was incapacitated by Ashrah. Although Sindel questioned Kitana on what the Edenian mantra was that she murmured. She even had a flashback as she regretted giving the Edenian Kamidogu to Shujinko before Kahn's so-called invasion.

Thru Aiko's heart gem, she and several others were able to monitor the Nexus battle between the Champions and Onaga; for Sindel it was her husband, Jerrod. She and the other spectators cheered for the Kombatants until the Kamidogu were destroyed and Lao conjured the lethal Tornado. Onaga's soul began to ease out of Reptile, and Sindel along with her compatriots were escorted by Raiden to the Sky Temple via portal!

She stood by along with Kitana at the summit waiting for Jerrod's successful recovery. They reunited and soon prayed for Lao's and Liu's essences with Nightwolf's tomahawk empowered by his spirits. Momentarily, it was over, and she was relieved the Champions were themselves once more.

Final Kombat[]

Queen Sindel still proudly held the throne of Edenia with King Jerrod as they, Kitana, Jade and Asgaarth were discussing with Sheeva and Goro on the Shokans' future plans on relocating to Australia for a fresh start, away from all the wars and the foreboding Outworld. She was shocked of the news, as Sheeva and Goro may not be her personal bodyguards... That was until the throne room was invaded by Kintaro! Goro took the offensive and easily won over him but didn't kill him. Instead, they stated they no longer war against the Centaurs nor the Draconians against the Tigerians. Kintaro thought he was dreaming, and Sindel stated it wasn't, as the Shokan learnt from Lao and the peace treaty that their violent hearts can be casted aside and used for the greater good without Kahn's tyranny!

She didn't quite know of Armageddon, the involvement of Blaze, nor the controversy of her old nemeses yet. Until Kitana went to her with Liu Kang. She forgave her for not being informed though she knew the breaking point would come sooner or later. She and Jerrod remembered the ancient legends around Argus and Delia, on why the Pyramid was erected and Blaze was created as to wipe out all the Kombatants for the sake on balancing the universe. She dreaded this, even if her old nemeses, such as Kahn, would return. She broke down in dread and Liu swore to put an end to it; she had her doubts as a mortal can't triumph over Blaze since he was developed by Delia's intense pyrokinesis. She even welcomed Baraka's assistance on using tactful ways to overcome the melee.

Jerrod and Sindel helped to prepare everyone before the Battle of Armageddon and promised to protect her family there; she along with Jerrod, Baraka and the Chameleons supported Mileena and her parents were the only ones remembering her before she was cloned. She also wished Kitana would arrive and do the same... Jerrod and Sindel were both cornered by Shao Kahn and his lethal Hammer, until they'd been spared. Thanks to Liu's fire cocoon and Cetrion's tears, they were revitalized and still stand as Edenia's strong leaders, even when they congratulated Taven as Edenia's new Protector God and Kintaro took the fold as bodyguard while the Shokan left for Australia. They were also relieved that Kitana and Liu Kang were still alive, albeit different incarnates, as they officially became time hoppers but are more than welcome to visit.

Kontentment[]

Sindel, along with Jerrod, arrived within the Edenian Palace and met up with Kitana and Fire God Liu Kang. Although, the latter couple hastily went into the realm via Hourglass as Kitana hastily expedited it utilizing the Krown while he passed out... The monarchs took them in, and the time-hoppers tried to hide their amazement on knowing who they were. Still, Liu became attached to the peaceful kingdom, and they soon knighted the couple as its defenders. Before they knew it, they were fending off Shao Kahn and his generals, with the might of Fire God Liu Kang! Argus was astonished and escorted him before the Elder Gods bestowing him worship and Kitana ascending to goddess status! Sindel and Jerrod granted them their blessings, and they tied the knot!

Unfortunately, due to the death of the Great Kung Lao after winning over Goro, Liu erased all history...

That was until Kitana became ill just weeks after Armageddon. Liu carried her to the Palace after Caro's portal, and the royals tended to her. Until she went into labor and delivered their grandson, Cheung Kang!

Koherence[]

Sindel and Jerrod stood before Kenshi and Aiko as they'd been discussing their method on restoring hearts across the realms. A riveting rock song would do the trick while also safeguarding Aiko from the Matokan drums. Sindel was surprised that Liu took Nightwolf's visit along with Lao and Raiden, even Kitana. Unfortunately, she was unable to sing as not only she wouldn't only do it poorly but because of Quan Chi's resurrection making her banshee damage her vocal cords. Jerrod, however, stepped up to the plate and demonstrated he can play the keytar! She wished the group luck, especially since they'd little time to spare.

She also confirmed that the Makeba tribe were the actual ancestors of the African then Indian tribes of Earthrealm, courtesy of a portal and traversing there sometime during Onaga's union of the smaller realms and expansion of Outworld!

Trivia[]

  • Because of her crucial role in the classic trilogy, Ikran related Sindel to Miss Killer/Haruka Misaki in F-Zero GP Legend; even she was resurrected by The Skull, a necromancer, to serve Black Shadow, an evil ruler, to have a leg up in the competition as well as putting her former boyfriend, Rick Wheeler, in harm's way.
  • She also decided for Kathleen Delaney, the same voice actress who played Rouge the Bat, to be her ideal VA in her fanfics.
  • Ikran has chosen Sindel as one of her video game Sonokinetics.
  • Sindel's source code description in MK1 is Stability.

This version of Sindel was created by Sindel_MKD, aka Sindel/Valor (Duo-Muse), aka Sultry_Edenian. She became the leading role in her own picfic/roleplay known as Mortal Kombat Legends, based on the trilogy of the same name. She doesn't stray too far from the source material and still keeps her devotion, caring nature, and some PTSD from her previous incarnate. She actually happens to be a daughter who has descended from three other Edenian queens. though much like her source, she too lost Jerrod and her benevolent kingdom by Kahn. Since then, she has been resurrected from her suicide, and her soul was saved; however, she still gets plagued by her past experience, having a banshee housing inside her then released by Nightwolf, and have herself be in harm's way by various enemies.

Shao Kahn had been resurrected, but after a lethal fight with Sindel and Kitana being the victors, the queen began to have flashbacks of her dark past... Kahn was injured but still alive, while Nightwolf took her to Earthrealm for recovery and spiritual training. By the time she was ready, she returned to Kahn's Fortress, however, it's been locked; luckily, she was skilled in puzzle solving and soon faced off with Mileena! She threw a Sai into her leg then retreated. The queen was able to dislodge it and heal herself temporarily before she reached the prison. She saved the prisoners, only for one of them to be decapitated by the executioner. In hopes to avenge his death, she stood ready but was greatly injured while activating lava traps. Mileena made a face-heel turn after she found out she was created with Kitana's DNA as a weapon, regarding Sindel's advice, so she gave Sindel a serum made by Shujinko which healed her wounds. She teamed up and fought off Tanya before reaching the throne where Kahn awaited with the thralled Kitana, an undead Liu Kang, and Jade. After a brutal battle, Mileena won over Jade while Kitana restored her memories fighting Sindel. With the Edenians freed, Kahn vowed for revenge with Tanya.

After their return to the Edenian Palace, Sindel shown Kitana the armory. She warned there were dangerous artifacts inside; there were some dark robes that belonged to someone she knew, that being her sister, Sindy, who was jealous of Sindel's blessings by the Elder Gods. As Kitana was resting, Sindel sensed an intruder who was Shang Tsung. Hurt, she followed him out with the Chaosrealm Kamidogu in possession. Sindel and Kitana were incapacitated, but they were saved by an unlikely ally, Fury. Somehow, she was able to have a separate incarnate, gifting Fury with the Flame Hollow after the latter defeated Circe, Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn and venturing thru Hell and the Bar of Oblivion. The separate incarnate was able to complete the Winter Hollow, in her Edenian HQ. She was soon separated by the Scarecrow by the fear toxin, taking her to another location. Fury fought off more criminals before she reunited with the entity after defeating Scarecrow.

The real Sindel was still incapacitated, even went on a journey into the distant past meeting a young Shujinko. She later has a private chat with Bo' Rai Cho and reveals that "Damashi" is none other than Onaga in disguise as the astral orb. After Shujinko aged 5 years, courtesy of the Chaosrealm's stream, Bo' tells the secret.

Some past events creeped up to her, and Sindel was raised by her mom, her sister and an aunt; Sindy became jealous over her sister, so she sought on a quest for power, while her mom trained her new prowess. Unfortunately, she died trying when Kahn invaded, and she passed down her staff, the Kwan Doe, as a legacy item. Jiang Nam, Sindel's aunt, trains her to stop Sindy's corruption.

After the fight with her sister, as well as Shang, she soon recovers inside the sacred Jinsei Chamber. She found out she has been cursed by a Banshee dwelling with her, granting her abilities like her signature screams and flight. Nightwolf assisted on relinquishing the curse, resulting in her loss of strength. Raiden assisted Kitana, Rain and Sheeva into the Chamber for rest.

This was where we see her posse for the first time: consisting of Sub-Zero, Reptile, Baraka, Nightwolf, Aiko, Ashrah, Sonya, Jade, Liu Kang, Sareena, Mileena and others. After she healed, most of her allies left though some stayed (this is when we see Aiko for the first time), and Kitana was the first to help her mom train her new abilities without the banshee inside her. It took on the physical manifestation known as Dark Sindel, similar to Raiden's corruption, and she knew it was her chance to vanquish her. As a result, from Nightwolf's training, she used her obliteration spell as a last resort, rendering her wounded and mortal.

She also happens to be Aiko's trainer, after she found her when Kano, created by Kronika after her demise, sent them 5,000 years into the future. Liu Kang decimated the Titan, with Sonya as backup, but the results were dire as Sindel lost her close partners and her home. She lost her beloveds Sheeva and Kitana then, and her comrades were erased from history. She was lost in Outworld without a purpose since Kahn was wiped out. She was about to seek death, till she came across a revenant Kitana tending whatever crops was left in the wastelands. She then ran into the Outworlder, Aiko, who asked for her training to improve her kombative skills. In order to fight the Revenant hordes, she trained the "Outworlder Time Traveler", albeit reluctantly, even fighting gracefully with a staff and open palms.

The latter was a technique from the White Lotus, which made Aiko intrigued since the faction reminded her of Kung Lao whom she lost; it was unveiled he met his demise back at the Kolosseum. So, she was determined but sustained a terrible injury. Sindel tended her wounds, and their relationship began to bond, even to the point on the cardiokinetic addressing her as "mom." Sindel and Aiko sparred with each other, as her final lesson, although she became arrogant after Sindel mentioned she must not keep her guard down when an enemy is down. Unfortunately, they'd been separated by the Revenants in the Living Forest, though she did run into Kitana as a wraith.
