Tomas Vrbada, better known as Smoke, also later known as Enenra, is a Lin Kuei assassin turned cyborg in the Mortal Kombat fighting game series.

Smoke made his debut in Mortal Kombat II as an unplayable secret character, appearing as a human before making his playable debut in Mortal Kombat 3 as a cyborg.

Smoke returned in Mortal Kombat (2011) as a playable character, appearing in his human form for the first time in 6 years. In Mortal Kombat X where he is a Revenant and a non-playable character, Tomas renounced the Smoke moniker in favor of calling himself Enenra.

Mortal Kombat 1 no longer depicts Smoke as a half-Enenra. Instead, he is fully human who uses smoke-based magic spells.

Mortal Kombat II[]

Smoke started out as a ninja assassin of the Lin Kuei Clan. He was a friend and ally of Kuai Liang, the younger Sub-Zero, and had gone with him to Outworld on his mission to kill Shang Tsung. The two ultimately did not accomplish their mission however and returned to their clan in Earthrealm. When Sub-Zero and Smoke returned to the Lin Kuei, they discovered that their clan had chosen to transform their best warriors into cyborgs, already performing the procedure on Sektor and Cyrax. Refusing to be automated into machines, Smoke and Sub-Zero turned on their clan and fled. Whilst Sub-Zero managed to escape, Smoke was captured by his peers and converted into a Cyborg, designated with the codename LK-7T2. Under the programming of the Lin Kuei, Smoke was forced to hunt his old friend and kill Sub-Zero for turning against the clan.

Mortal Kombat 3[]

During the events of Mortal Kombat 3 and Shao Kahn's invasion of Earth, Smoke's fortunes continued to fail him. Although he discovered, with Sub-Zero's help, that he still retained his soul and was in fact one of Raiden's Chosen warriors, he was captured by Kahn's forces not long after assisting his former friend in a battle against Sektor and Cyrax.

The inert Smoke was transported to Outworld as a trophy and was locked away in the bowels of Shao Kahn's fortress.

Mortal Kombat: Deception[]

Nearly a decade later, however, he was discovered by Noob Saibot. He reactivated the cyborg, whose nanotechnology set about repairing and improving his systems. Reprogramming Smoke to obey only him, Saibot turned the cyber-ninja into both his ally and template, for a future army of cyber-demons, that was to rise from the Netherrealm.

Although he appeared to follow orders blindly from his new master, it has been hinted at that a part of his soul and good nature still remains.

Mortal Kombat: Armageddon[]

In Mortal Kombat: Armageddon's Konquest mode, Smoke still fights on some kind of side and uses his powers to transform Lin Kuei warriors into shadow fighters. He is fought by Taven during his exploration of the Lin Kuei Palace. At the end of the temple, after the defeat of Noob, Sub-Zero states that he would try to make Noob's memories return, but his plans with Smoke remain unknown. It is interesting to note that in Armageddon's intro, Noob is still on the evil side, fighting Ashrah, while Smoke can be seen fighting Nitara on the good side. This may hint that Sub-Zero successfully restored Smoke's memories, while Noob escaped the process.

Along with almost every kombatant, Smoke was killed during the battle.

Mortal Kombat 9 and X[]

Smoke appears with the younger Sub-Zero to search for the whereabouts of Bi-Han, the original Sub-Zero. They are in the Wastelands of Outworld, and the two Lin Kuei warriors decide to split up. Then Kitana appears before him. Smoke defeats Kitana in battle, later heads to the Living Forest, while Sub-Zero heads to the Soul Chamber. Smoke notices Kano and Shang Tsung, who are in the process of a heavy weapons deal. Smoke attempts to stop them and is first challenged by Kano. After defeating Kano, Shang Tsung morphs into the elder Sub-Zero, and teams up with Reptile in a two-on-one battle. Smoke defeats them both but is ambushed by Sektor and the Lin Kuei cyborgs. Smoke was saved from the Lin Kuei cyborgs by Raiden; however, this would eventually cause the younger Sub-Zero to go through the automation process instead.

Smoke joined Raiden's resistance to battle Shao Kahn's forces' invasion of Earthrealm, despite Raiden preventing him from helping Sub-Zero. When Raiden, Smoke, and Johnny Cage attempt to sway Princess Kitana to help the Earth warriors, she attacks Smoke and Johnny Cage first, and defeats them both in a two-on-one fight. At another point, Smoke appears with Raiden, Liu Kang, Kung Lao, and Johnny Cage and find Jade having just defeated Mileena. Smoke believes Mileena (a clone of Kitana) to be Kitana, and fights Jade for assaulting the Princess and their newest ally. However, Jade defeats Smoke, and is later informed of the situation. Although he is not seen during the second Mortal Kombat tournament, Raiden mentions to Liu Kang and Kung Lao that Smoke had been defeated and eliminated from the tournament prior to Johnny Cage's defeat at the hands of Ermac.

Smoke is later seen after the Earthrealm invasion was underway. After Kabal defeats Cyber Sub-Zero, Smoke rushes to his aid. It is at Smoke's request that the Earth warriors reprogram Cyber Sub-Zero. Kabal agrees, and Cyber Sub-Zero is taken to Jax to be reprogrammed. Smoke is the first one Cyber Sub-Zero sees after his reprogramming and agrees to align with the Earth warriors.

Smoke appears with the Earthrealm's warriors a few more times before the Lin Kuei cyborgs attack. Smoke is eventually killed by Sindel along with most of the Earthrealm fighters and is resurrected by Quan Chi to face Raiden. Ironically, Raiden escapes the Netherrealm to face Shao Kahn.

The revenant Smoke, now identifying himself as Enenra, was a participant in the Netherrealm invasion of Earthrealm. He, alongside Jax and Nightwolf, fought Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade on their way to the Jinsei Chamber in the Dead Woods. Smoke engaged Johnny Cage but was quickly defeated.

Smoke does not appear again until Shinnok is released from his own amulet. He is present along with with the revenant versions of Liu Kang, Sindel, Kung Lao, and Kitana. He along with the other revenants pledge their allegiance to Shinnok. He then goes to the Sky Temple with the revenants to aid Shinnok in taking the Jinsei. He engages with Raiden but is swiftly knocked out after being shocked alongside Kitana and Sindel, while Liu Kang and Kung Lao are defeated by Raiden himself. After Shinnok corrupts the Jinsei, Smoke is later seen with Kung Lao telling the other revenants that Raiden's portal to heaven is sealed and leaves with Liu Kang to try and break it. Smoke is later seen engaging both Takeda Takahashi and Jacqui Briggs.

After Shinnok's defeat, he retreats back to the Netherrealm along with the other revenants.

Mortal Kombat 1[]

Smoke, being referred to by his given name Tomas, is accompanied by Lin Kuei forces to Madam Bo's teahouse to demand payment from Madam Bo. There, farmhands Kung Lao and Raiden intervene to stop the clan's attack. Tomas engages them, but is defeated before his brothers, Bi-Han and Kuai Liang attack as well. After they are defeated, Liu Kang arrives to reveal the attack was actually staged to test both the farmhand's resilience. Tomas and the other Lin Kuei depart while Bi-Han and Kuai Liang accompany Liu Kang to Johnny Cage's mansion.

As later events develop, Tomas and his brothers are dispatched by Liu Kang to infiltrate Ying Fortress to capture and stop Shang Tsung and Quan Chi, powerful sorcerers whose destinies was altered from what Liu Kang had designed, and to disable any Soul Wells created. Tomas and his brother defeat the defending forces. Tomas remains outside to disable Soul Wells while his brothers enter inside. After some time, Kuai Liang returns, revealing to Tomas that Bi-Han had betrayed him and Earthrealm to side with the sorcerers. Bi-Han eventually catches up to them, where he is defeated by Kuai Liang. Tomas questions their next move, with Kuai Liang stating they will leave the Lin Kuei before taking Bi-Han back to the Lin Kuei palace.

As further events worsen, Tomas and Kuai Liang join the allying Earthrealm and Outworld forces. They discover that a variant of Shang Tsung had been manipulating events from the start. Tomas joins his allies in halting Titan Shang Tsung's plans while kombating variants of themselves from Titan Shang Tsung's timeline.

After the revelation of multiple timelines, Liu Kang forms a new Forces of Light to kombat an alternate version of Shang Tsung that had been meddling with the timeline by bringing in Titans and kombatants from other timelines to aid him in the upcoming battle. Tomas joins Liu Kang in kombating the upcoming threat.

Liu Kang arrives in Titan Shang Tsung's timeline with his Forces of Light to battle Titan Shang Tsung's Forces of Darkness. A battle ensues with kombat and death all around. Titan Shang Tsung summons a Titan version of Quan Chi, thus reforming The Deadly Alliance for the battle at hand. As the battle wages to the top of the Pyramid, a good version of the Deadly Alliance briefly fight the Titan Deadly Alliance before being quickly killed. At the top, the Titans fight Liu Kang and an ally, only to be bested by Liu Kang's ally in kombat. Liu Kang uses his Temporal Power to erase both Titans, but in doing so, causes the timeline seemingly begins to collapse. Running out of time, Liu Kang sends his ally back to their respective timeline before doing so with himself.

Back in their timeline, Liu Kang reveals that Tomas and Kuai Liang had defected from the Lin Kuei to start a new clan to succeed the Lin Kuei.

Smoke was seen at a 300-foot precipice within the Appalachian Mountains, hesitating as he was failing to fend himself off from Oniro. Recently, he had been reprogrammed as Nightwolf was able to restart his core after he decided to shut himself down thanks to the intruding memories of his past interfering his functions. He soon reunited with Sub-Zero, then he vanished some time before the Outworld insurrection.

Kuai came to his aide, but was unsuccessful on defeating the Grandmaster, till Kung Lao intervened, and Aiko was able to finish him off! He reunited with the ninja again and volunteered to defend Earth from Kahn's invasion; he was able to detect Cyrax and Sektor venture to New York and he transported the heroes there. He was determined to put an end to Sektor, though he ignored Kuai's dismay. He had an even keel with the robotic assassin, but as a restored human, he eventually gave way. Aiko then was able to subdue Sektor's central heart unit, then Kuai froze him and warned he can self-destruct! Smoke teleported away just in time, much to the cryomancer's relief. But it was short-lived since the heroes were attacked aloft by Shadow Priests and soon Tarkatans. They fought them off vigilantly, however...Smoke was unfortunate to get electrocuted by the Priests electrokinesis!! He became inert before Sub-Zero was able to catch up to him as he'd been transported to Kahn's Fortress.

Also, while Smoke teleported Sektor into the air just milliseconds before he exploded, there was a random brunette male that shouted in a falsetto voice, "Toasty!".

He was then seen as his inert self as Kung Lao failed to save him. He tried using his razor-rimmed hat to cut apart the chains, but he got shocked! Nightwolf theorized if Kahn'd be destroyed, he can be saved... If possible since Smoke was suspended over a tiny platform peeking over some lethal lava pools. He was later saved by Sub-Zero and his team once Liu Kang destroyed Shao Kahn! It was just minutes before the Fortress began to collapse! Smoke was briefly exchanged to Sheeva as Kuai and Jax failed in attempts to remove the rubble blocking the exit where Liu Kang was. He was soon passed back to the cryomancer as the Champion and his friends emerged victorious!

A few weeks later, he was again reprogrammed by Nightwolf while the shaman decided to stay at the Wu Shi Academy; some components were removed while others were restored, making Smoke use both forms in one place! Before he and his "mui přítel" wandered into the Lin Kuei training grounds, he confessed that Nightwolf also reprogrammed a microchip left over by Sektor after he exploded! It may have the information needed on Quan Chi's involvement with Bi-Han and the slaughter of the Shirai Ryu...

Shinnok's Uprising[]

He still accompanied Sub-Zero at their Lin Kuei headquarters. Even after a couple years, the organization went thru massive changes! Smoke remained as their most promising agent in both organically and metallically; however, the robotomy surgery has been falling out of favor. With Oniro and Sektor gone, the operations were optional, though word got out and was eventually frowned upon by many. He and Kuai then witnessed a falling comet 50 miles away and went to investigate.

During the Netherrealm War, Smoke disobeyed Kuai's orders on staying in base, as Smoke actually remembered the fight against Oniro and recalling it being at the Appalachian Mountains, he believed the deceased Grandmaster had the sacred Dragon Medallion! To his surprise, Smoke was correct, and he offered it to his surrogate brother! Kuai heard the warnings on losing control while wearing it without skill, but he was thankful he'd no longer suffer while in intense heat since Shang's lethal fissure! Later on, he made it official to move the Lin Kuei to the Northern Pole, Arctika!

Mortal Kombat: Vengeance[]

Smoke was still the second best to Sub-Zero, as was Frost during the small tournament on searching for more qualified recruits for the new Lin Kuei. By the time Fujin alerted the new Grandmaster, Kuai recommended Smoke to hold the fort while Frost was anxious to prove her worth. Kuai was, however, reluctant as she's a woman and still a rookie, though he was also afraid of losing another brother, as if having Liu Kang partially die wasn't bad enough. Hanzo wondered why Kuai wouldn't let his brother intervene, and he was nervous he may lose him again like he did long ago to Oniro; Hanzo wished Kuai should give him a chance since he has the best of both bodies as a cyborg.

After a moment of silence for Liu Kang, the Grandmaster announced to the Lin Kuei he was proud on having Frost as his most promising apprentice and wished for her to fight alongside him again.

Members of the clan, even Tomas, could've sworn they saw Frost's and Kuai's crystallized eyes as they gazed into each other and slowly closed in before they kissed and made a warm embrace... Kuai and Frost were officially a couple!

Return of the Dragon King[]

Smoke was with Frost and Kuai inside the Lin Kuei throne room when their subordinates escorted a girl in; she turned out to be Sareena, a demon defecting from the Netherrealm. Smoke was astonished to meet a woman not suitable for the sheer cold, let alone a demon. He and Frost were just as anxious as Kuai to discover the mystery concerning his elder brother, Bi-Han, who was converted as a wraith by Quan Chi named Noob Saibot! Kuai reluctantly enlisted their assistance, however, as they reached Outworld, Smoke suggested for him and Frost to remain there and assist the Edenian resistance against Onaga; much to Frost's dismay, as he wasn't confident on them breaching the Netherrealm. Kuai accepted and only he and Sareena were on the hunt. Tomas detected an intruder, never hesitating to fire at the first sign of danger, although by his light, it turned out to be Nightwolf. He was preparing for the lethal Sin Eater ritual and appreciated the help on collecting tainted souls so he could enter the underworld!

He and Frost were still anxious awaiting for Kuai and Sareena's return when they came across the time-displaced Baraka! They were alarmed, but he assured he was disgusted by Onaga and his cronies, even how his clan was still willing to serve a vile dragon governing the undead! They were relieved Kuai and Sareena arrived safely, and everyone volunteered to fend off the Dragon army, as Nightwolf needed more tainted souls for him to enter the Netherrealm.

Smoke began the melee as he made his usual appearance, by covering the forest floor with thick layers of smoke! Before he used the rockets beneath his feet and fired a couple rockets into the fray! Every enemy was stunned before most of the zealots were frozen by Sub-Zero and broken by him, Frost and Sareena. He proved to be a versatile Kombatant utilizing the Lin Kuei's hi-tech! When the war eventually subsided, he was then escorted to the summit of Raiden's Sky Temple eagerly waiting for his comrades' recovery. He soon made it to Articka after the reunion.

Final Kombat[]

Smoke along with a few Lin Kuei scouts noticed a stranger in yellow garb fight off the Tengu klan and a couple Ice Beasts; he fired a rocket toward the latter and assisted Taven. He offered him to seek shelter from the blizzard at the Lin Kuei base. He stayed with Kuai, Frost and Sareena until the storm cleared when Taven spotted a monolith and disappeared inside it! They were then addressed by Raiden who wanted to regroup him and the cryomancers while he took Sareena to meet up with Ashrah.

Smoke was soon summoned by Raiden along with Kuai and Frost to meet him at the Dragon Grotto. The Shaolin warriors, Kitana, Kenshi, Hanzo and Frederick met up with the trio before Raiden discussed the matters involving Blaze and Armageddon. He shared their angsts on the matter and having their enemies be resurrected to gang up on them, even Oniro and Sektor... A small group was made to espionage the Netherrealm.

Kuai and company returned to Arctika to prepare their strategies for Blaze and Armageddon, that was until they observed the unexpected return of Bi-Han, no longer his corrupt self. Thanks to Ashrah's purification and eviction out of Hell, he soon accepted him to join their ranks and assist during the inevitable battle. Bi-Han was also impressed the cyber-Lin Kuei was overthrown and Smoke demonstrated he could use both factions effectively.

Smoke rode on the Netherwing en route to the southern crater. He met up with a struggling Cyrax against Sektor and spared him despite his defective armor. He mimicked the assassin's moves and his prowess. Both Smoke and Cyrax had their armor defective by the intense firestorm and Cetrion's tears entering their circuits; luckily, they'd been revived in the flesh. They too went thru repairs at the new Special Forces base and by the time Bi-Han went thru training at Delia's temple, he came out of the closet like Fujin and Jin did! He was still a crucial ally to the Special Forces several years later.

Trivia[]

  • The scenario in which Smoke went thru a system restoration thanks to Nightwolf was inspired by the 3-part fanfic, The Ghost in the Machine. In Ikran's first MK story, she referenced him and that same fanfic, as he kept calling Sub-Zero, mui přítel, meaning my friend. Fun fact, Smoke, aka Thomas Vrbada, was from Prague, and his native tongue was Czech! So, while misspelt, Mui Přítel, means My Friend in Czech!
  • In Deadly Alliance/Deception, it was said that Smoke was abandoned and left for dead for about 12 years since the events in MK: Trilogy! Ikran hated that fact, as well as having him be re-reprogrammed by Noob Saibot!! As a result, she cut him out, and let Frost accompany Kuai. The scenarios in which Kuai didn't want to lose his surrogate brother from Oniro's plots and having two elementals to confuse the enemies was symbolic to them! Just like in Shinnok's Uprising, he holds the fort again in Arctika.
  • According to the MK1's site source code, his purpose is loyalty. His older brothers in arms are Scorpion and Sub-Zero respectively in the new Lin Kuei, and as an orphan he looks up to them and whoever's good for the clan.
