General Sonya A. Blade is a soldier who was a member of Earthrealm's Special Forces unit known as Outer World Investigation Agency (OIA) in the Mortal Kombat fighting game series. She now commands all operations of the Special Forces and Units, like the new Earthrealm unit, which is Cassie's team. She is one of the few original Mortal Kombat characters, debuting in the first Mortal Kombat arcade game, and was the first female character introduced in the series.
General of Earthrealm Special Forces, Sonya Blade is a beautiful, stern, tough-as-nails General. Sonya represents a very emancipated and headstrong woman, but for all her stubbornness and pride, she deeply cares about the lives of her friends and comrades. She has a long-standing enmity with the Black Dragon leader, Kano, who had murdered a former partner of hers, and stands for everything Sonya despises. She has also feuded with other Black Dragon members such as Jarek.
During the events of the new timeline, Sonya was in a relationship with Johnny Cage not long after the Netherrealm War and Shinnok's defeat, they got married. Together, they had a daughter named Cassandra Carlton Cage, but they later divorced.
In the beginning of MK11, she sparred against Cassie during the military title promotion match. Afterwards, Raiden consults Cassie, Sonya, and Johnny about attacking Netherrealm as the utmost importance. During the mission, Liu Kang (MK11 Dark Emperor) interfered and trapped Sonya under rubble in Shinnok's Bone Temple, at which Sonya detonates herself to destroy it. However, due to Kronika's interference, younger versions of Johnny Cage, Jax Briggs, and Sonya were brought to the current timeline.
Like most MK characters, Sonya also fits a character archetype, being the series' first damsel in distress. She was frequently kidnapped by the forces of evil early on in the series canon. However, as the series went on, she became less of a damsel in distress.

Sonya did of course follow in her dad's footsteps, training excruciatingly for the Special Forces. Her dad, and her missing twin brother, were the motivations on her to become a soldier, and she quickly soared thru the ranks to Lieutenant. 5 years before the first tournament, her partner, Wexler, was tracking down the Black Dragons and Kano to his and Sonya's torn motel, and as Sonya followed the trail, all she found was an answering machine with the note, Bye Bye, Baby. It actually began to detonate, and Sonya narrowly escaped! She saw Kano, the man responsible for massacring Wexler, before she fainted and was recuperated. Her captain informed her that Wexler was killed.
On the night before the first MK tournament, Kano employed someone to be a decoy against the pursuing Sonya and Jax. In Hong Kong, she found the mole after shooting him thru a window during a heavy metal concert, and in his dying breath told her where to find Kano. She and Jax went to the Shanghai port and encountered the dragon canoe; desperate and obsessed, Sonya ran onboard and learnt about the tourney she wasn't invited to, or albeit indirectly by following her assassin. She went with Raiden, Johnny, and Liu to Shang's Island and the Lost Sea disabled all her equipment leaving her out of range. Still, she teamed up with the trio and eventually dealt with Kano and broke his neck! She witnessed Art's death by Goro, captured by Shang, and saved by Johnny thus beginning their relationship; even when she stated he was egotistical by challenging and defeating Goro!
After that, the heroes went to the Temple of Light, but Kahn wanted their souls and meet him back at the isle where Kano was resurrected! Sonya immediately fought him until the isle collapsed! She escaped to the Wu Shi Academy awaiting Liu and Lao and was presented a medal by Raiden for her efforts, but she was incapacitated by Baraka and captured again at Kahn's Arena. While Liu and Lao kept the overlords distracted, Johnny rescued her again before they returned to California.
Sonya was soon couped up at the mountain base by Raiden reuniting with her allies, excepting Johnny. She assisted the team yet still distracted by Kano's whereabouts, hence being sassy, disobedient, and sometimes detached, especially with Stryker. It was confirmed after Nightwolf found a Black Dragon insignia, then the team went to the Great Pyramid rigged with traps by Kano; he also built a spider emanating rips. Sonya defeated him twice, one at the Pyramid, the other with assistance by Kabal. Yet still, he always gave her the slip. It was also during that encounter she mentioned her friend, Maggie, when she was in elementary school, as she questioned why people can't see the lesser fortunate thru their handicaps, in which Kabal stated that people are just ignorant always judging others who're different.
Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks, Part II[]
She was first seen aiding Jax after he'd been almost incapacitated by Komodai's acid, till Kung Lao stepped into the fray. She then took a Dragon Jet with him and piloted it because of his disabled bionic arms. After she remembered the young Aiko then seeing her older self, she wondered where Johnny Cage was since he wasn't summoned by Raiden, yet there were Lao and Aiko. Jax assumed if she had a relationship with him, but she immediately scorned at the thought. With Raiden dismissing his Kombatants since there was little to no activity in Outworld, she should go to LA and see what he's up to.
By the time she showed up with Jax, they recognized him within an outdoor sound station! Johnny reunited with her, but he was uneasy to see Jax, as he once kidnapped and interrogated him of Sonya's whereabouts, since the Special Forces lost her distress signal over Shang Tsung's Island. Cage then questioned if she'd have any interest in Jax since she hadn't gotten involved with him in so long...
Unfortunately, there was no answer as his set was being ransacked by Motaro and his Centaur extermination squads! Johnny held them at bay, even the large beast and he begged the duo to evacuate before they witnessed the horror of losing him!
Sonya and Jax escaped via Dragon Jet and headed to the East Coast where readings of Kahn's Fortress emitted. They saw Liu Kang and Kitana make a leap of faith off a collapsing Bell Tower, and they only managed to save the monk while the princess was rescued by Asgaarth. They made camp and she and Jax broke the news of Johnny's fate. She wished he can be resurrected, since the knight unveiled Raiden's been recovering in the Jinsei Chamber which was used as a sacred healing territory. They got some shuteye, though Sonya was still willing to defend Earthrealm.
By dawn, the quartet marched along the Bridge and as Liu and Jax were in the middle of a discussion, she wished she'd be grateful on surviving for so long if it weren't for the death of Johnny. They were suddenly ambushed by the Tarkatan generals, Baraka and Mileena! While Liu dealt with the former and Kitana faced her lethal sister, Sonya and Jax kept the Tarkatan extermination squads at bay! She once shouted to the Edenian she should take advantage of Mileena's and her weak spot, the legs, though she was muffled during an assault. Luckily, Kitana took her advice and won over her clone, but she never had the heart to kill her. Mileena made her mark, and Sonya just fired her laser projectiles incinerating the corpse! Jax made the Bridge collapse and cause an avalanche that decimated the extermination squad, then Kitana led the charge.
Moments later, the quartet met up with the other Kombatants within the abandoned subway tunnels and caught up before they prepared themselves for the final stretch to Kahn's lair. Time was indeed of the essence as she knew that if both realms should complete the merger, Kahn's power'd be infinite leaving Raiden and the two worlds defenseless.
She soon escaped from Kahn's Fortress after Liu was able to destroy the Konquerer! She, along with her team, was ecstatic to see him alive and well. Later on, she and Jax were glad to be reinstated in the Special Forces, after they mourned over the loss of Johnny. In light of the recent invasion by the Centaurs, they became aware of attacks by other realms.

Sonya was seen in Shanghai as she was chasing after Jarek, though she was unsuccessful when her ribs were directly kicked! She was stunned and the remaining Black Dragon escaped. Then she received a message from Jax, which turned out the subsidiary division of the Special Forces created the Outworld Investigation Agency. Jax sent a chopper to pick her up, and she was astonished when she reunited with Johnny Cage!! He told her that he recovered from Raiden for two years inside the Jinsei Chamber due to his extensive injuries. Sonya was amazed even when the celebrity volunteered to fight against Shinnok. The chopper arrived in the Bayan Har Mountains near the meteorite and asked Nightwolf to power up her new gizmo capable of forming portals. It succeeded as it led to Edenia, and she stuck with the group as they accepted Quan Chi's new Mortal Kombat tournament within the corrupt palace.
She barely recalled Quan Chi, contrary to Aiko, Sub-Zero and Nightwolf who knew him vividly. Still, Johnny stuck by Sonya, much to her dismay. He even wondered if Liu was still obsessive over Kitana in which the agent replied with sarcasm they were. Cage coaxed if they should work on THEIR relationship, and as the altercation broke out, the team was ambushed by the Army of Darkness! With her energy rings, she proved to be a decent fighter, even while being covered by Johnny in which she never welcomed! As the enemies advanced more with their skilled generals, Liu declared the group to separate! Johnny went with Sonya as they escaped to the Cobalt Mines.
Somya tried her damndest to keep the Army at bay, even with her machine gun, but it wasn't enough especially against the crafty Shadows. She was then tripped by one of them which caused her to topple over and roll down a hill. Johnny went to her aid, only to have their weight make the ground collapse! They went over a landslide and thru a skinny path next to it, they emerged into the Cobalt Mines. Sonya was the interrogator as she questioned one of the Shokan generals for answers; he told her all about the mines, including the rumor that outsiders, including Quan Chi, can be weakened and poisoned by the cobalt throughout the rocky walls, at least those that didn't have a human lineage. Since Sonya and Johnny were against him, Shinnok, and the gathering army, the Shokan and a few helpful Centaurs joined the rebellion.
She and her allies then went thru Jade's Desert, since they needed to infiltrate the Edenian Palace discreetly. She encountered Cyrax stuck inside the sand. She managed to pull him out and offer a Centaur to carry him if they can find safety. Fortunately, it wasn't long before they went to a nearby swamp. Thanks to the dense covering, the rebels can slip thru, though Sonya dismounted from a Centaur as she recognized Jarek. She cornered him toward the edge of a precipice, but he had enough strength to pull her down! Luckily, she was saved by Kung Lao who witnessed the altercation! She was relieved to see him, Aiko and Kitana again, even enlisting the Saurians! She too was assured that Jarek was killed by Jax. She offered him to take Cyrax and make a portal to Earthrealm, then she reunited with the team.
Sonya arrived with the others and assisted Liu Kang and Jade against another wave of the Army. She urged everyone to wear the Cobalt armor and resist against Quan Chi's machinations, though the Tarkatans stormed toward the Palace too early. Instead, she followed Jade and Kitana thru a secret hatch leading into the prison system. By the time the heroes reached a triple path, she stayed with Johnny, only to have it led to the throne room according to Nightwolf after he was urged by Raiden to stay in Edenia while Scorpion and Sub-Zero left to Earthrealm with the Amulet. She was later contacted by Kung Lao asking her to make a portal into Earthrealm; since they were still in Edenia, her generator can only make a portal to the last pinpoint near the Bayan Har Mountains. Lao urged the escapees thru as he and Aiko guided them to the Wu Shi Academy.
Sonya met up with the Edenian women at the Prison and she assured the escapees were safe. The women warned that Shinnok took Kung Lao and Aiko prisoner in the Netherrealm, and Liu, Raiden and Fujin went after them! She offered to generate a portal to it, but Nightwolf said it won't be possible, as it can only be accessed thru spiritual means. Instead, she along with other Kombatants participated in a ritual offering their strength to the former Champion after Kitana traced his soul. The trio was successful on decimating Shinnok and finally won the war!
A few days had passed since the end of the Netherrealm War. By the time Kung Lao and Aiko were finally out of recovery, they returned to the Wu Shi Academy with Liu, Sonya, Johnny, Kitana, Nightwolf and Kai. Aiko discussed with Sonya and Johnny of their future concerning their possible daughter, Cassie, as she never wanted them to go thru the same fate as her ruined time, whether it'd be in a lethal divorce, Revenants, or even Jax having a daughter named Jacqui while also going in a downward spiral after his wife was killed. Cage offered to work for Bollywood, the same thing Bruce Lee did for a time and soon volunteered to be a part of the Special Forces. Sonya was summoned by Jax who made a successful experiment on restoring Cyrax's humanity!! He decided to work for the forces of Earth and refused to return to the Lin Kuei. Moments later, Sonya received the call from Raiden over her communicator on account he was leaving Earth behind as achieving as an Elder God.
Mortal Kombat: Vengeance[]

Sonya was struggling to make a connection with the Outer World Investigation Agency, with no luck, not even calling Jax, Cyrax nor Kenshi. She then received a call, thinking it was her close partner. But it turned out to be Stryker who briefed her that he and Kabal was attacked in New York! With the clues of the artificial heart, hook swords and the bloody engraving of a red dragon, Sonya realized it was Hsu Hao! She realized the Red Dragons are still active; the Black Dragons was formed as people left the former upon its strict policies. Hsu Hao only allied with her in eliminating the Black Dragons, so she and Johnny arrived to chase down the traitor. Johnny came to her aid, but he wasn't so lucky against him. Fujin came to his side and tossed Hsu into a nearby dumpster and informed the couple that their mission shall change trajectory; Liu Kang was killed by Shang, who returned with Quan Chi! Much to their dismay, they must return to Shang Tsung's Island while Fujin recruits other Kombatants. They arrived, and she revealed they're engaged, as was Jax! Raiden assumed Hsu can be working for the Deadly Alliance, thus crossing paths with each other.
Sonya was training a few pointers to Aiko, even practicing her spin kick if her leg should get caught by an enemy. However, their spar was interrupted by Fujin's F0 tornado encasing him, Hanzo, Kuai and his new apprentice, Frost, who seemed to warm up to her and the cardiokinetic. Upon Johnny's query, she wondered why Shang never took the creepy ship, in which Raiden replied he'd only use it to transfer many souls to his Palace where he'd revive Onaga and his undead army; instead, the heroes went thru the Celestial Portal, and once they should enter Outworld, the God brothers will be powerless. They still took on the gamble.
They arrived under the portal and Sonya was impressed on how Lao and Liu incinerated the former's Revenant self! Raiden reminded the mortals they're on their own once they crossed over, and Sonya soon stubbed upon a long, metallic console. She examined it and recognized it belonged to Cyrax, as a part of the lost OIA! Kung Lao chased after the ominous figure, who turned out to be Jax! Sonya was excited to reunite with him, and he informed he lost contact with the Special Forces while also being stranded; she grew anxious to take down Hsu Hao. She was also relieved to arrive at the Edenian Palace and recruit allies such as Kitana and Jade. She and Nightwolf offered Lao and Aiko to break the troubling news involving the Deadly Alliance.
The next day, Sonya suggested for the group to wear Cobalt armor like they did during the Netherrealm War; the Edenians were prepared already taking her advice with several Ottomans forged. While fighting the Onis, she was mostly covered by Jax and Johnny. Kitana took in Sonya's advice for the heroes traversing straight thru the Wastelands instead of taking the tree lines as said by Frost. According to the Edenian, the terrain was easier to go thru, and they wouldn't be ambushed as much. She then followed a sudden aftershock, and came up to Lao, Aiko and Bo' Rai Cho! She too was disgusted on him abandoning the Shaolin and being banned from the Academy, not even no longer looking out for Lao and Liu! While the heroes assured the Orientals they shouldn't be ashamed due to his fall from grace,
Sonya was one of the heroes that noticed the flies always landing on the group while Lao, Hanzo, Kuai and Jax were destroying the sarcophaguses in the Lost Tomb. Soon enough, they were coming from the horrid demon, Drahmin, along with his Oni partner, Moloch. After Jax challenged the brawny demon, Drahmin added that the OIA shall be no match, as the fleshy mortals'd meet the same fate as Cyrax. That put Sonya in alarm as she questioned him, though her CEO and Hanzo outmatched the duo! Unfortunately, they got no answers before they decimated after losing. Still, Sonya never gave up hope as she asked Nightwolf to trace the Deadly Alliance's location thru the dangerous Sarna Ruins.
It wasn't too difficult to traverse thru for Sonya, being she had thinner clothes than the rest of the team. It was smooth sailing until a tornado touched down. Kung Lao went straight to it, decimating the funnel from the inside! He was successful, until no one was able to catch his fall! An invisible field caught him, and the group rushed to Johnny, Jax, and her missing associate, Kenshi! He stated he lost contact with the OIA days ago, even with Cyrax, in which Sonya shown his missing arm console. Kenshi became desperate as he was searching for the Dragonfly. But things got compromised when Aiko strayed away as she followed the enticing drums of the Makeba! Luckily Kenshi broke Konga's thrall over her and escaped with the airship to their next destination!
Sonya and Jax were able to spot the same golden glimmer they noticed back at the Living Forest! She came to the conclusion it belonged to Cyrax and Jax landed the ship! The Special Forces agents, minus Kenshi due to his blindness, were assisted by the cryomancers. Unfortunately, due to the dangerous heat of the Lava Shrine, her comrades stayed while the elementals proceeded. Sonya stood by until Kuai returned while being towed by Hanzo. Liu Kang's soul entered his body to reduce his pyrexia, and she was relieved the defective Cyrax was safe as he retreated to Earthrealm. She was also surprised that Baraka decided to tag along!
Sonya suggested for the team to head thru the underground tunnels to infiltrate the upcoming Palace, the source of the immense darkness. Only it turned out to be Moloch's Lair.
She suspected there'd be an enemy ambush as the heroes emerged near Shang's Palace, and sure enough there was an army of Tarkatans and the two volatile Red Dragons awaiting them! Sonya made out Kabal's hook swords wielded by the terrorists and enhanced by them! Kenshi offered for Johnny to stay by her side as he assisted Jax; he knew they were a couple, after all. So, she and the group had their hands full of the Tarkatans, until the Red Dragons were vanquished, and the God brothers came to their aide despite the fact they'd have minor powers in Outworld.
Sonya stuck by Johnny, Jax and Kenshi as they tried to brainstorm who should assist Kung Lao against the Deadly Alliance. She stuck with the team as they got their hands full of Tarkans, and after the gruesome fight, she dreaded on taking the week-long journey back to the creepy Celestial Portal. Until Johnny observed the Nethership hidden bleakly! He declared a bon voyage and Raiden and Fujin powered up the vessel airborne to the portal leading to Earthrealm.
Sonya then called the New York hospital as soon as she spotted the severe abrasions on Kenshi's ribcage. Kuai and Frost were on healing duties stalling infections, pain, and blood loss, and she jogged her memory on dealing with the treacherous Hsu Hao using Kabal's hookswords. Stryker updated on Kabal's condition from critical to stable, and he congratulated her for a job well done.
Mortal Kombat: The Return of the Dragon King[]
Sonya, along with several other Kombatants, rushed thru a portal that led to Shang Tsung's Palace where the God brothers were fighting against a monstrosity named Onaga, the resurrected Dragon King! Lao took on the offensive first, but it wasn't long before he was wounded. Lao summoned Liu Kang's fiery dragon spirit back into the amulet before it was decimated, when Sonya, Jax, Johnny, Kitana and Nightwolf got involved. Needless to say, their efforts were futile, and Raiden was too weak from the scrimmage. All she did was observe her mentor conjure lightning into him! Fujin knew what was coming and before the fighters knew it, they were each caught in the explosion decimating the Palace and leaving only a scratch on Onaga!
Sonya, Jax, Johnny, and Kitana were resurrected as Onaga's undead cronies, and the Tarkatans were recruited afterwards. Since Kitana and Tanya failed as Onaga's corpse was incinerated, he enlisted the Special Forces agents and the Tarkatans to force the people of Sun Do to reveal the location of the last Kamidogu to which they'd been silent; Sonya still functioned as the brutal enforcer and disregarded for their welfare. She told Onaga that she and Jax received intel from Johnny that the amulet's in the Temple of Elements, and she'd contact him as soon as she finds the coordinates. Yet still she was involved in a scrimmage en route to Edenia.
She mostly fought against Khameleon as soon as she confronted the male Chameleon when her partner, Jax, was beaten. Sonya, however, was quickly overmatched by the skilled Saurian before she was unexpectedly impaled by Ashrah's Kriss blade. Later she was taken to Raiden's Jinsei Chamber and recovered mentally and physically along with Jax, Johnny and the infantry. She soon contacted Sub-Zero she'd escort him back to Earthrealm from Outworld where he was tending Baraka's wounds. She still waited for the Shaolins' fates, and she was thrilled that everyone recuperated.
Final Kombat[]
Sometime later, General Blade received of the rise of the new Tekunin klan, led by Sektor who was revived from the explosion he executed to Smoke several years ago. Spotting the warship over the South American jungle, she and the Special Forces bombed it, forcing Sektor to surrender. Little did she knew that a special someone was onboard who decimated the fleet before he bailed and returned to Orin.
She was in the reformed Special Forces base, discussing the preparations for Armageddon with Johnny, Jax and Cyrax. Stryker and Kabal soon met ip with the quartet. She also denounced the battle of Armageddon couldn't come at a better time since Johnny reminded her that Cassie was about to be brought into the world, having her be a trimester in. Still, she was willing to assist the forces of Earth to decimate Blaze and their enemies in one last round.
She boarded the Netherwing with her fellow agents and she was ecstatic once she noticed Fire God Liu Kang's sudden arrival. She led the charge until she and her associates were caught off guard by Hsu's laser! She was also bested by Jarek until Kai intervened. And she'd been wounded until the firestorm struck! Thanks to Cetrion's recuperating rainfall, she and her upcoming baby were restored! She was one of several Kombatants who ran up the reduced Pyramid to meet up with the mourning Lao over Liu and Raiden's sacrifice...
Sonya did reflect on it for a while, but she was preoccupied with her growing stomach! Johnny met up with her wearing the same concern, and even Jax was thrilled since his daughter was coming too! Sonya dreaded the Special Forces would have a field day if she should take medical leave, but she was assured her comrades could help, even those in the OIA. Several years later, her squad began to grow with the new Kombat Kids (Cassie, Jacqui, Takeda, Jin, Kuai and Frost's kid) even allies from Edenia and Outworld!

- It was a tough choice on choosing an ideal VA for Ikran's fanfics, either Sandra or Olivia. That was until Vengeance! In which Ikran chose Sandra as the ideal actress. While Shaolin Monks Part II picked Sonya's Shaolin Monks' actress and Shinnok's Uprising picked the VA for MK4.
