In the live-action version, she is portrayed by Selena Gomez. She also makes appearances in The Quest for Beasts: A New Generation in which her voice is provided by Virginia Madsen.

Biography[]

Sonya was born in the 1980s to Jim Matthews, a pilot and businessman, and Karen Matthews (nee Phillips), a businesswoman. She has an older sister called Courtney. Sonya's ancestry is revealed to be English (her paternal grandfather was born in London) through her father and German (her great-grandmother was originally from Munich) through her mother. When Sonya and Courtney were still young, their parents were killed in a plane crash. Their grandmother, Ann, took the girls in as a result. Ann was also trained in magic and so passed her knowledge onto Sonya. After Ann died, Sonya later was sent to the prestigious Red River Boarding School and later in her teens, she and her friends Daniel, Ethan, Michael and Juliana would travel the world to protect the beasts and fight against many enemies.

Appearance and personality[]

Sonya is a fair-skinned girl with brown hair that she often keeps tied back into a ponytail and hazel eyes. She typically is seen wearing a sky blue T-shirt, navy shorts and brown boots. In the final episode, in her vision, she is depicted having her hair out and sporting a white tank top, camo pants and black ankle high boots, which is retained in New Generation. Sonya is a kind and brave individual. She also appears to be the voice of reason among the gang and it is implied she and Daniel have feelings for each other, which become more evident in Rise of Babylon. Sonya also appears to like animals. It is also stated she is a bookworm.
