The Special Forces was initially formed in the United States of America as the United States Special Forces with the goal of stopping international crime gangs, in particular the Red Dragon and Black Dragon clans. By the time of Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, the organization has become the Earthrealm Special Forces; while it was still an anti-crime organization, its mandate had expanded to defending all of Earthrealm against other dimensional invasions, such as by the Tekunin and other threats to Earthrealm as a whole.
The game that includes the Special Forces as the main protagonists is Mortal Kombat: Special Forces for the PlayStation. Kano and Jarek of the Black Dragon are the organization's main enemies.
The Outer World Investigation Agency (OIA) was something of a successor to the original U.S. Special Forces, as many members of the U.S. Special Forces later join the OIA. The OIA later became the Earthrealm Special Forces. Sonya Blade convinced her Special Forces officers to create the OIA after being attacked by Outworlders.

Of course, Sonya and Jax were temporarily a part of the Special Forces, however, they'd been relieved by their CEO since he never believed the agents on saving other realms. He stated they'd already had their hands full with the usual Black Dragons and other weapon/drug dealers throughout the US and abroad during the Somalian War.
Luckily, Sonya and Jax established their own organization, the OIA, and proceeded to defend Earthrealm from foreign threats.
Shinnok's Uprising[]
The Special Forces caught wind from Sonya and Jax's Dragon Jet and utilized its ingenuity to win wars both domestic and foreign, only to advance their own aircraft.
Sonya and Jax were still on the hunt for anymore stragglers of the Black Dragons and found Jarek in Shanghai. She was unsuccessful, until she was saved by Kung Lao as he backed her off a cliff in Edenia, and Jax tossing him off. Since then, the Black Dragons had been starting to dwindle drastically.
Earlier in the story it was revealed by Sonya that she and her team has created experimental gizmos that're capable on creating portals after a large jolt of energy, but they can only open one while the next rip returns them to their previous location. It was soon advanced to make multiple locations.
Mortal Kombat: Vengeance[]
Sonya and Johnny were awaiting contact from their homebase on the whereabouts of the OIA. Jax, Cyrax and Kenshi hadn't responded to them over the last several days. Just then, the agents caught an urgent message and recognizing the voice, it belonged to Stryker in New York!! Sonya took the call and she and Johnny raced to the empty streets where Kahn's Fortress once stood! There, they were ambushed by the guy with the artificial heart, and she identified him as Hsu Hao, the traitor who left the team!! Stryker warned via hospital he and Kabal were wounded, with the latter being in critical condition! Sonya was flabbergasted by seeing Kabal's hookswords and Johnny took him on! Luckily, they were spared by Fujin's sudden whirlwind tossing Hsu into a nearby garbage dumpster! He changed the agents' trajectory as he believed the Red Dragons can be working for the Deadly Alliance; the sorcerers that killed Liu Kang! Sonya alerted the agents shall be in Outworld for a time...
About a week passed, and the heroes were successful on decimating the Red Dragons and the demonic duo! Sadly, the Red Dragons obliterated the OIA base, thus losing contact, by using a rocket as the same one which destroyed the Dragonfly! Jax hoped the Edenians shall take inspiration from the Special Forces and OIA to create more advanced transportation with the groups funding them! Cyrax malfunctioned as he returned to Earthrealm by helping Nitara split her realm, Kenshi was healed from a fatal wound by Kuai and Frost, and the agents had their mission accomplished!
Tiil news broke out that Onaga had been reincarnated!
Final Kombat[]
The Special Forces were alerted by Sonya that Sektor was alive and was reforming the new Tekunin clan! Receiving the news as the warship was soaring over South America, they bombed it down! Little did they knew that Taven was onboard and escaped from the doomed vessel before it crashlanded.
A few days later, Sonya, Jax, and Johnny arrived at the Wu Shi Academy via Fujin's funnel; unfortunately, he was too late for Raiden's summons and warnings of the upcoming Battle of Armageddon. About three days later, they were in their new base making any last-minute preps, and Sonya grew preoccupied of her baby bump in which she was only a trimester in; Jax grew just as curious over Vera's predicament. Johnny was still the optimistic one, even when he wanted to make a surprise for Aiko as he'd develop her fics into feature films, or books at least since the squad would have a field day once the babies arrive and their officers would take medical leave. Stryker and Kabal soon arrived, though the riot officer was more reluctant to join. Cyrax was soon ready, and the top agents headed to Edenia.
While the lower ranks stayed at base, Jax, Sonya, Johnny and Cyrax marched into battle, taking out whatever enemy was in their path, including Oniro, Hsu Hao, Quan, or the two Onis! The group cheered as they witnessed the sudden firebomb take out most of the infantry within the crater, only for it to belong to Fire God Liu Kang!! Some were gravely injured while others still stood, before Blaze unleashed his fury onto the Pyramid hoping to wipe out all the warriors and soon the realms! They didn't notice them being covered in a fiery cocoon conjured by the merged deity only for him to deteriorate as he changed Blaze's trajectory into the atmosphere! When the agents came to, they raced up the Pyramid as they heard a shrill cry, it was Kung Lao, who was grieving for Liu's and Raiden's sacrifices...
They soon made it home, and at one point, they noticed Liu was still alive and well as his elder self while he traveled thru time and became the new Keeper! They were thrilled to see their mentor and soon the new generation of the Special Forces was born! Still led by Sonya and Johnny, they piloted a Black Hawk in Outworld and landed near what used to be Kahn's Kolosseum. The team prepared themselves for the lethal fight against Kotal and his new minions at his Arena in which was once Shao's. They still have allies from Outworld and Edenia, and their party grew immensely consisting of Kung Lao, Aiko, Kung Jin, Kenshi, Hanzo, Kuai, Frost, their newborn, Bi-Han, Sareena, Takeda, Fujin, Jacqui, Kai, Nightwolf, and Smoke.
