Stheno is one of the Gorgons in Greek myth. She appears in the Disney's Animated Myths and Legends episode Perseus and the Gorgon, in which her voice is provided by American-Canadian actress Cree Summer.

Biography[]

Stheno is the eldest of the three gorgon sisters-with Euratye in the middle and their infamous sister Medusa the youngest. All three were once extremely attractive young women, with Medusa being the one whose attentions men fought for the most; however, she was unable to marry because of her devotion to the goddess Athena and as such, took a vow of eternal chastity. The sea god Poseidon, however, fell in love with her and subsequently the two had an affair, which Stheno and Euratye witnessed. This sparked the ire of Athena who forgave Poseidon, but punished Medusa and her sisters by turning them into gorgons, deadly snake-haired monsters with a killer gaze, and later had them banished to a desolate, isolated island. A side effect of this was that Stheno and Euratye gained immortality, meaning they would live forever, while Medusa would later on be killed by Perseus.

Appearance and personality[]

In her human form, Stheno is a fair-skinned young woman with black hair and brown eyes. She sports a black and red crop top and skirt, an emerald necklace and a bangle on her wrist which resembles a coiled snake. She and her her sister Euratye also wear black shoes on their feet, unlike their younger sister, who is barefoot. After her transformation, Stheno's hair becomes a mass of snakes and her eyes become red with catlike pupils. Her nails also become clawlike and her teeth turn into fangs. Her outfit is retained, but torn at the edges, likely to reflect her savage and animalistic nature. Stheno was once gentle and loving, however after her transformation, she became embittered and sadistic.
