Team Galactic is a criminal organization set up in the Sinnoh region. They are led by a man named Cyrus, referred to as "Master Cyrus" or simply "The Boss" by his underlings.
Cyrus' goal for Team Galactic is to rebuild the galaxy in his image, using some of Sinnoh's Legendary Pokémon, which are said to have created the entire world. This is not apparent to the main body of the organization however, as many of the Grunts believe Team Galactic's sole purpose is in capturing Pokémon. Saturn, a commander of the organization, admits that he had no idea what his boss is planning. In Team Galactic HQ, Saturn says that discovering new sources of energy has become their new goal.
Cyrus declares in Generation IV that the world is incomplete with emotions. By harnessing the powers of Dialga and/or Palkia, he can start over by erasing the world and creating an entirely new one. But the player usually stops him by capturing or defeating the mascot Pokémon.
Team Galactic is first seen in Jubilife City, specifically two Team Galactic Grunts who are trying to steal research from Professor Rowan. The player joins Dawn/Lucas in a Double Battle against the two Team Galactic Grunts, who then flee.
One of the commanders, Mars, is later encountered in the Valley Windworks, with the goal of exploiting its energy sources on behalf of Team Galactic. Mars ultimately loses to the player in a Pokémon battle and leaves.
At Eterna City, Team Galactic has a building titled Galactic Eterna Building. Their slogan is open about the fact that they want others' Pokémon. At one point, Team Galactic steals Rad Rickshaw's Clefairy, which the player has to rescue.
Cyrus is first encountered at Mt. Coronet, but his association with Team Galactic is not made evident yet.
At Veilstone City, Team Galactic has two buildings of their own, the Galactic Veilstone Building and Galactic Warehouse.
At Pastoria City, a Team Galactic Grunt is encountered. After obtaining the Fen Badge, the player has to chase a Team Galactic Grunt to Verity Lakefront and defeat him in a Pokémon battle.
After the player meets with Rowan and his assistant at the Canalave Library, Team Galactic drops the Galactic Bomb in Lake Valor. At this point, Saturn is battled in Valor Cavern, where he goes for Azelf. Meanwhile, Mars and Jupiter go for the other two Lake Guardians, Mesprit and Uxie, respectively.
After the player clears the Snowpoint City Gym, Team Galactic gathers the red chain. The player battles them in Spear Pillar to stop them from summoning Dialga (in Pokémon Diamond Version) and Palkia (in Pokémon Pearl Version).
Team Galactic had some differences with their role, and Cyrus appears more commonly, being first encountered in Lake Verity. The game introduces another commander, Charon, who is first met alongside Mars at the Valley Windworks.
At Spear Pillar, Cyrus's plan is foiled by Giratina, who pulls him into the Distortion World. After Giratina is defeated, Cyrus is not seen again.
After the player becomes the new Pokémon Champion, they can encounter Team Galactic again at Stark Mountain. Since Cyrus has gone missing, Charon takes over his role as the boss. The player battles Mars and Jupiter and they quit. Charon tries to take the Magma Stone to awaken Heatran so they can triumph again, but Looker disguises himself as a boulder and quickly steals the Magma Stone from Charon and proceeds to arrest him.
