The Deadly Alliance was a partnership between the sorcerers Quan Chi and Shang Tsung that was formed during Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, serving as the main antagonists and the final bosses of the game.
The Deadly Alliance was a temporary alliance between two powerful sorcerers: Shang Tsung, advisor to Emperor Shao Kahn and host of the last Mortal Kombat tournament in Earthrealm, and Quan Chi, a free-roaming sorcerer and former ally of the fallen Elder God Shinnok. Their eventual goal was to conquer Earthrealm by using the Dragon King's undefeatable army. In Lex Luthor's Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe ending, he allied with Quan Chi and resurrected the Deadly Alliance. However Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe is non-canon.
In the episode, Unholy Alliance, of Mortal Kombat: Conquest, Shang Tsung partners with the evil sorcerer Quan Chi to lure Kung Lao away from the Earthrealm, leaving it vulnerable to attack. In an elaborate and ambitious attempt on Kung Lao’s life, Shang Tsung engineers an uneasy partnership with the evil sorcerer Quan Chi. While both are powerful in their own right, this alliance, in theory, could make them unstoppable. With Kung Lao in his weakened and vulnerable state, Shang Tsung has Quan Chi lure him away from the Earthrealm into a parallel realm that contains everything his heart desires, including his simple pre-Mortal Kombat life and his beloved Jen. As is most often the case with Shang Tsung, there’s more, much more, than meets the eye. The ‘parallel realm’ that Kung Lao has been lured to does indeed have everything he’s been longing for–in fact, whatever he desires appears before him. What Kung Lao doesn’t know is that this isn’t a parallel realm at all, but a 24-hour illusion being maintained by Shang Tsung. When the 24 hours has passed, Kung Lao will become Shang Tsung’s prisoner for eternity, which would leave the Earthrealm without a defender in Mortal Kombat and could ultimately free Shang Tsung from the Cobalt Mines to return to his destructive ways. The plan is proceeding without a hitch, until Shang Tsung double-crosses Quan Chi. Originally Shang Tsung had agreed to share the secret for drawing the life force out of one’s victims and harnessing that power for one’s own gain (in exchange for Quan Chi luring Kung Lao away from the Earthrealm). Once Quan Chi had this knowledge, however, he would become much more of a challenge to Shang Tsung, so he reneged on his deal. As one good double cross deserves another, Quan Chi goes to the trading post and tells Taja and Siro exactly what’s going on and what they can do to stop it. While they’re reluctant to believe him at first, they realize that if Quan Chi has come to them in an effort to foil Shang Tsung, there must be serious trouble. Quan Chi transports Taja and Siro to the ‘parallel realm’ and they’re able to see that it is an illusion and one that’s fading fast. Kung Lao, on the other hand, isn’t as easy to convince–it’s not until Siro drives a dagger into Jen and nothing happens, nothing at all–that he’s able to see he’s being manipulated by the forces of evil. With only seconds to spare, Kung Lao, Taja and Siro make it through the portal back to the Earthrealm, once again scrapping Shang Tsung’s plans.
Mortal Kombat 1 ultimately reveals that Shang Tsung and Quan Chi's destined formation of the Deadly Alliance was forged by Kronika. There was also the Titan Deadly Alliance building the Forces of Darkness and starting Armageddon.
Mortal Kombat: Vengeance[]
Indeed, aside from Kung Lao, these were the main characters featured in Ikran's story! Raiden and Fujin recruit the distant Kombatants to stop them as well as secure Liu Kang's soul.
It was questioned by Johnny if whether or not Shang would use the same creepy ship that he used for the first tournament. Raiden confirmed he uses the Nethership only to transport his legions of souls across both Earthrealm and Outworld in order to revive the Dragon King and his undead army. Instead, they used the Celestial Portal to enter Earthrealm and kill Liu Kang; thus, using the same method to infiltrate the foreboding realm.
The Deadly Alliance was operating the upcoming Palace as they were enslaving the people of Sun Do, either as sacrifices to imprison their souls for Onaga and his undead army, feeding them to the Onis below, or forcing them to build their fortress. It was stated by Shang that they informed the sorcerer the location was the secret belonging to the Soulnado. With the Amulet, Quan Chi shall be able to unlock the vicious storm in order to attain endless amounts of souls from the Heavens. They even sent out Mavado and Hsu Hao to scout the meddling heroes to make sure they perished upon the destruction of the Dragonfly.
Shang was about to absorb Li Mei's soul, as the final sacrifice to complete his undead army for Onaga! Unfortunately, he and Quan sensed the lively souls of the heroes. Not even the Tarkatan army was a match for them! Tsung then ordered Quan to unlock the Soulnado, then the two evildoers were distracted by Raiden and a wrathful Scorpion! Being he wasn't in Hell anymore and since he was consumed by his insatiable rage, Quan tossed him into the Soulnado! Lao and Fujin then shut down the volatile vortex, much to Shang's dismay! The two aerokinetics spotted Raiden struggling, and Liu ordered Aiko to face the dragon amulet to Lao, where his spirit was unleashed! Shang was thrilled to have his desired possession, though was intrigued Liu was in Lao! With their aerosol skills, he was formidable against him, as Shang nearly bested Nightwolf, till Quan caved into the shaman's soul-draining strategy taught by Bo'! Even the Whirlwind Kicks and Liu's lethal moves were fatal against Shang! Kenshi, wounded, finished off Quan with his powered-up longsword, slicing his neck! Before Shang was drawn into Lao's Tornado Brutality assisted by Liu's raging spirit, Nightwolf, and Kenshi! His souls exited his vessel before it was shattered from within!!
Quan Chi was the only member left hanging by a thread, as he stated to Raiden and Fujin their endeavors were all for naught as they had everything, they needed to resurrect Onaga. Infuriated, Fujin conjured an aero energy sphere, massacring Quan for good, although his last words were true. The god brothers both witnessed the reanimation of the mummified army, as the sorcerers had enough dead souls encased in them. Onto that, Onaga was unveiled thru the shadows, letting out a menacing roar signifying he's free to roam and destroy all Realms!
Final Kombat[]
The Deadly Alliance were first seen in Kahn's Fortress, particularly Kahn's throne room, as Quan was discussing his battle plans with Onaga, Kahn and Shang to gain the upper hand onto the heroes before turning on themselves and whoever survives would be the one to slay Blaze and become a god by absorbing his flames. Little did the overlords knew they were being spied by Hanzo and Taven.
While the Deadly Alliance were marching onto the final battlefield, they were taken off guard by Fire God Liu Kang's sudden meddling as his firebomb startled and decimated some of the infantry. They still ran into the melee, and they were involved with a few opponents. It wasn't until FGLK forced down Quan Chi onto Shang, even sparing Kenshi and Nightwolf, before they fought each other and soon incinerated by Blaze's firestorm!
