Third Earth is the home planet of a wide variety of sentient and non-sentient beings of both native and alien origins. It became the home of the ThunderCats after Thundera was destroyed.
Mumm-Ra mentions that he was "I have known of its (eye of Thundara) power for a thousand years, from a time when this was still First Earth" indicating Third Earth had been this way for a millennium. Everyone hundred years the planet has a total eclipse, any spell cast by Mumm-Ra at this time will last until the next eclipse.
Later, the ThunderCats came to Third Earth as refugees, along with the stranded Mutants. The ThunderCats defeated Mumm-Ra many times, ending his tyranny over Third Earth. Along the way, the ThunderCats developed friendships and coalition with Third Earth inhabitants. When most of the ThunderCats left the planet, they established a group called The League of Third Earth, which was entrusted with protecting it.

- When Ikran was 10, she fantasized 3 squads to assist the ThunderCats. Third Earth was the home planet for the Fast Bro Squad (with Sonic, Tails and Knuckles visiting from Mobius), the Prehistoric Squad and the Diddy Kong Racing Squad. It also had such places like the Great Valley, and locations from Diddy Kong Racing as next-door neighbors such as Snowflake Mountain with Hook Mountain, or Dino Domain beside the Treetop Kingdom.
