Thomas in Trouble is the fifty-third episode of Sodor High School: Thomas and Friends Tales, and the first episode of Season 3.
Synopsis[]
A violent brawl between Thomas and Gordon results in both having to help pay for the destruction of an expensive display case at school. Thomas now needs to get a job to help pay for his half of the bill.
Plot[]
One frosty, yet snowless, February morning, construction workers are busy laying down a whole new branch line. Amongst those working on the project is Marion Fitzpatrick, the manager of the China Clay Pits. Meanwhile, all is not well for many of the students at Sodor High School, as two months have passed since James had left the Island of Sodor to go to the mainland with Molly in order to begin a whole new life. Thomas is especially affected by James' departure and feels equally responsible for it. He asks Percy if any letters from James have come up, and Percy sadly tells him no, but does hope that James and Molly are doing well in their new lives.
Inside the building, Gordon has finally returned to school after serving out his two month suspension and remains the only person to be satisfied over James being gone, being displeased that he's still being pegged as the villain despite driving (in his eyes) an attempted murderer away. As soon as Thomas, Emily, and Percy enter the school, the former and Gordon lock hateful eyes at each other. Emily tries to get Thomas to walk away and ignore Gordon, but she gets pushed aside by him as he and Gordon intensely argue over whose fault it was that James left. It reaches a breaking point when Thomas angrily claims that Gordon will forever live in the shadow of his older brother. This greatly enrages Gordon and begins a brawl between the two former friends, with both sides inflicting nasty injuries to each other before an aghast Sir Topham Hatt arrives and demands to know who started the fight. When he gets no answer, he orders that Thomas and Gordon get cleaned up at the infirmary and see him in his office soon after.
In the principal's office, Thomas' parents are present for the meeting as Sir Topham Hatt scolds Thomas and Gordon (especially the latter since it's his first day back from suspension) for their fight and tells them they've destroyed an expensive display case, but he assures he won't suspend or expel them—instead, their punishment is to repay him for the damages they caused. The amount surprises Andrea and Dalton, but Gordon claims he can pay his half with the money he earned working at the rubbish dump, which Sir Topham Hatt accepts and wants to see tomorrow morning. Gordon leaves but not before taunting Thomas one last time, and Sir Topham Hatt speaks more kindly to Thomas, who apologizes for the fight before the principal reveals that he lowered the amount Thomas owes and is under no time limit to pay the bill. Thomas starts to leave when a purple-haired boy, Ryan, and his father, Steven, arrive, with Sir Topham Hatt realizing that the boy is a new student and explains what happened earlier. Steven offers to help, revealing that he's the head of the construction crew building a new branch line and offers Thomas a job, stating that the payment will help with the bill needs to pay up. Dalton is pleased with the offer. As Thomas and Ryan leave the office so the adults could talk some more, Percy and Emily walk up. Realizing Ryan is new, Emily offers to show him around, which Ryan accepts, but Thomas sadly declines to come along as he heads for his first class in a depression.
Later that night, as dinner is being prepared by Emily, Annie, and Clarabel, Thomas is sulking in his room about all of the bad things that have happened recently when Andrea and Dalton show up, wanting to know what's troubling their oldest child. Thomas confesses that he feels as though his social life is falling apart ever since James left the Island of Sodor, as he and Gordon aren't friends anymore, and he's now in debt. Andrea and Dalton comfort Thomas the best they can, believing James will someday return before suggesting some dinner will help a little bit.
At the construction site, Steven, Jack and the Pack, and several additional workers, including Marion, continue with working on the new branchline. Watching from the top of a nearby hill are Mike, Rex, and Bert, being train lovers and wondering what the branchline will be named when it's finished. Unknownst to anyone, there are additional workers who don't appear interested in the job, but are rather there to look for treasure, revealing they are pirates and members of Captain John's crew. During a conversation between some pirates, Marion overhears them mentioning the word "treasure" and becomes overly excited over the possibility of finding it. The disguised pirates, however, lie by claiming there isn't any treasure, disappointing her as she turns away and goes back to work. The pirates talk quietly amongst themselves one more time and return to work, too.
At the Splinterson residence later that night, Hamato Yoshi trains his two grandsons and their two best friends before stopping the session to praise their hard work. Mikey makes a smart remark about their progress, which earns him a pinch on the hand from Donnie for interrupting the speech. Hamato Yoshi decides it's time to present a gift to his pupils in the form of ninja weaponry originally belonging to his master from years ago; twin katana for Leo, twin sai for Raph, a bo staff for Donnie, and twin nunchaku for Mikey. He then reveals that he spoke to Sir Topham Hatt and he has given the four ninja teens special permission to bring the weapons to school, but they are to keep them inside their lockers during the day and are not to be used to threaten or harass any of the other students and teachers, with failure to obey those rules will be the weapons being banned and them being suspended for the rest of the year. A cocky Raph wants to immediately head out to stop crime, but is scolded by his sensei for the less than rational decision. Leo promises to obey the rules, causing an upset Raph to mouth him off, nearly starting a fight between both friends before Hamato Yoshi stops and punishes them by ordering they do ten flips nearby, also noticing Mikey and Donnie laughing at the expense of Leo and Raph and becoming exasperated with his pupils to the point of making a dry remark about what he's going to do with them.

Trivia[]
- This is the first part of the five-part episode based on the special "Sodor's Legend of the Lost Treasure".
- Two months have now passed since the events of "Parting Ways".
- This is the first time Sir Topham Hatt outright says "confusion and delay", which is his canon counterpart's catchphase.
- This is the first episode since "Thomas & Emily to the Rescue!" to contain Thomas' name in the title, and the second overall.
- Gordon mentions his part time job at the rubbish dump from "Gordon's Part Time Job", having made enough money from it to pay his half of the bill.
- This episode shows that Leo, Mikey, Donnie, and Raph all know how to speak some bits of Japanese.
- The final scene of the episode where the ninja teens are granted ninja weapons by Hamato Yoshi is inspired by the final scene of the episode "Lone Rat and Cubs" from Season 5 of the 2012 "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" CGI-animated series, where the young turtles are gifted their weapons by Master Splinter. The part where Leo and Raph are punished by being made to do ten flips after almost getting into a fight is also inspired by a running gag from the film "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Secret of the Ooze", where a one of, a few of, or all of the turtles have to do ten flips whenever they misbehave.
