In the prologue, Chris McLean is detained and convicted to prison for his previous crimes in Total Drama: Return of the All-Stars thanks to his nephew Thomas and Chef Hatchet, due to their abhorrence towards Chris for his ruthlessness towards both them and the contestants. Thomas later visits his father Don at home and presents him with a contract that requests Don to create a Total Drama season of his own. Don agrees to do so, but instead makes various changes and ends up orchestrating a worldwide spin-off season of his own; The Ridonculous Race.

The series begins with Don introducing 20 teams out of two. Eight characters from the original series return while 32 new characters join them. All 40 characters are then paired off into 20 teams of two. They start off in Toronto, Canada, and must race around the world for $1 million.
