Yang Fang Leiden is a playable character in Final Fantasy IV and its sequel, Final Fantasy IV: The After Years. He is a Monk from the kingdom of Fabul, and is among the highest ranked and most respected of their number. Despite this, he is a humble man, and so does not bask in his glory, but rather tries his best to be respectful. Yang is generally well disciplined, but has trouble with sleeping in, requiring the intervention of his wife and her trusty frying pan to wake him up.

According to the Japanese spelling, Yang is pronounced [jɑːŋ], not [jæŋ] as is more common for the word yang as it is typically used in English. This pronunciation is reconfirmed in the English localization of the 3D versions.

Trials of a King/Conquest of the Blue Planet[]

Yang was first seen warming up his monks at the Fabulian throne room; they were about to take another training session at their usual location, Mt. Hobs. But, when he saw Cecil, distraught, he cancelled the training session, much to the Monks' dismay. He accepted Cecil in, and he could already tell something was bothering him. They had a heart-to-heart talk while he was brewing tea, about his unpleasant experiences on meeting the Injukhal at Tenebre and how they were manipulating his weakness, almost falling for Dragon Rose and abandoning Rosa, even with his doppelganger, Dameon. Yang was astounded of this, and he knew he wouldn't give up Rosa willingly, unless he was truly brainwashed by them. Yang accepted Cecil to stay for a while until he's ready to retain the light at the summit of Mt. Ordeals. He was also curious if he can meet Kain there and attain the light together. After a hearty breakfast of Chocobo eggs and fried salmon, Yang and Sheila wished him luck.

In the second story, Fabul was invaded as the Injukhal brainwashed all of Yang's monks who're beating him and the Grandmaster to bloody pulps! Cecil came to their aide and using Rosa's Love augment for protection and magic prowess, he was able to incapacitate and heal the injured Monks. Yang was grateful, then the Paladin informed he must evacuate to Baron. Yang refused to leave and wanted to fight alongside him from the treachery last time. Cecil gave him the Master Key since Yang was once Baron's Royal Guard temporarily during his amnesia. And so, he reluctantly accepted to head to Baron with Ursula, Sheila, and the Monks.

Later on, he reunited with Kain who visited Baron for a little while, and they both joined forces to save Rosa and the world! Yang was a great assistant to Kain as they went to many devastated kingdoms, including Eblan which he enlisted help from Edge, despite their bitter rivalry. He was soon joined by Rydia and her Eidolons as the Fleet of Hope headed to Tenbre! The airship crashed, though Yang was still ready to fight off the Injukhal. By the time Cecil and Kain weakened Domin, he was astonished to see the Shadow Dragon!! Only to help as Golbez killing off Domin! Yang soon went back to Fabul, returned the Wind Crystal, and he witnessed the arrival of Baron's new prince, Ceodore!
